 Joi sighs, remnants of her smile still adorned across her cheeks.

‘ You always say things like that when you’re tired.  ‘   Tonight, the words are soft. No fancy music playing while they wait for the food to heat, the empty peltering of rain on the windows too brutal, too savage to remind them how real this was. K, her… he could make her happy. In front of him, she lowers herself slowly to a crouch beside his chair for a better look into his eyes, fingers of both hands perched on the corner of its arm and her chin almost, almost resting upon them.

‘ But sometimes it’s enough just having you here. ' She gives a tiny shrug, barely there. ' --Sitting with me. Looking at me like that. I like when you come home, K.

It feels different when you’re here.   ‘

                       "  Doesn't  make  them  any  less  true.  "  He's  always  tired.  K  wears  exhaustion  like  a  second  skin,  the  paranoia  of  him  being  the  next  android  on  a  long  list  to  be  put  down  like  a  rabid  dog  is  his  third.  But  that's  his  function,  is  it  not  ??  To  put  down  the  very  thing  he  is.  What  would  happen  to  Joi  if  one  day  he  doesn't  come  home  ??  Likely  be  shut  down  when  the  rent  isn't  paid,  destroyed  when  the  landlord  finally  clears  out  the  space  for  the  next  tenant...  he  wonders  if  he  can  ever  have  a  normal  line  of  thought  instead  of  whatever  this  was  that  his  reality  shapes.

                        He  reaches  out,  fingers  dipping  ever  so  slightly  into  her  hologram  as  if  to  caress  her  cheek.  Eyes  fall  over  her  face.  There's  nothing  but  love  strewn  across  her  visage,  and  he  isn't  sure  if  that  hurts  more  or  if  he's  the  exception.  He  never  will  be.  Thumb  strokes  over  where  her  cheek  bone  should  be.

The season is coming to a close. Something fairly evident in the way the snow lays heavier; the thinner blankets of summer and early fall now being hustled out to welcome the dense and suffocating winter on its heels. Puffs of breath linger in the morning air as John hustles and totes a bag of feed on his shoulder toward the crowd of cattle watching him. A faithful audience stands like wayward statues guarding the old fence line watching him approach with their food; and a restless energy ripples across them. The first bellow is aimed his way with disdain for making them wait so long and the second is a chorus that raises in octave as his pocket knife is drawn out, they knew this routine. Boots crunch behind him and setting the bag down his dark eyes flicker to the new approaching sound leaving the hairs on the back of his neck to raise. Instead of a drop of adrenaline, his heart stutters in its cavity only bleeding a warmth into his lungs and limbs. She’s drowning in his jacket and the snow has her wobbling as she marches toward him with a sweet smile on her face; the warmth in his chest threatens to drown him and makes his throat cramp for a brief second. A hand rubs absently against his shirt collar as he straightens and gives her a crooked smile in return, dark eyes tracing over the beanie pulled low on her blonde head and the way her hand rests on her stomach; it leaves an odd chord being pulled in his chest.

                        Smile  spreads  wide  across  the  expanse  of  her  soft  skin,  heat  rushing  to  her  cheeks  and  the  tip  of  her  nose  upon  seeing  the  man.  The  cause  most  definitely  a  combination  of  John  and  the  cold.  Hand  reaches  out,  the  gloves  a  size  too  big,  though  she’s  not  swimming  in  them  like  she  had  been  the  borrowed  jacket.  Hers  were  too  small  now,  unable  to  zip  it  up  over  her  stomach  (  Holly  had  cried  about  it  for  a  whole  afternoon  and  he  was  so  sweet  and  patient  about  it  ).  Besides,  wearing  his  jackets  that  smelled  like  sweat  and  hay  and  something  distinctly  him  made  her  feel  more  at  ease  than  she  had  ever  been.

                        Digits  grasp  his  until  she’s  close  enough.  The  absence  of  warmth  in  her  hand  leaves  an  ache  in  her  stomach-  or  maybe  it  was  their  baby.  He  can  sense  dad  getting  closer.  The  kicking  on  her  side  definitely  grows  more  intense  when  he’s  around,  and  it  makes  her  laugh,  small  wince  pressed  to  face  though  smile  remains.

                        "  Where  are  their  horns  ??  Don’t  cows  have  horns  ??  "  She  asks,  as  if  she  hadn’t  been  watching  them  for  months  already,  babies  and  mamas  running  around  the  fields.  It  had  been  her  favorite  thing  to  do  from  the  window  when  she  had  stopped  working-  entertainment  when  she  was  stuck  inside  the  house.  Holly  got  sick  of  it,  she  needed  out.

𝖙𝖍𝖊  𝖋𝖊𝖑𝖑𝖔𝖜  𝖐𝖓𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙'𝖘  𝖜𝖔𝖗𝖉𝖘  𝖑𝖆𝖓𝖉  in  a  way  that  the  storm  lord  doesn't  immediately  shrug  off.  his  jaw  works  once,  twice  …  not  in  anger,  but  simply  in  thought.  it  felt  a  rare  thing,  that  ;  someone  speaking  of  anger  as  though  it  were  something  𝔬𝔭𝔱𝔦𝔬𝔫𝔞𝔩.  it  only  piqued  the  lord's  curiosity  further.  lyonel  studies  him  …  amber  gaze  flickering,  head  tilting  just  slightly,  like  a  hound  catching  an  unexpected  scent. 

❝  then  they  must  have  other  motivations.  ❞  he  hums,  the  words  spoken  simply  &&  unhurried.  not  unkind,  not  mocking,  just  true.

❝  anger  is  not  the  only  thing  that  drives  a  man,  I  find  it  is  simply  the  ʟᴏᴜᴅᴇsᴛ.  ❞  a  beat.  a  faint,  wry  twist  of  his  mouth.  ❝  some  men  fight  for  their  rage.  some  for  glory  and  their  own  ambition.  some  for  love.  some  for  coin.  some  for  the  gods.  ❞  a  raise  of  a  dark  brow  as  he  regards  the  other.

❝  I  wonder…  what  kind  of  man  you  are,  ser?  ❞  what  fueled  the  knight  before  him?

                       "  The  last  one.  "  He  does  not  fight  for  glory  or  for  coin,  nor  love  or  anger.  He  fights  for  the  gods.  He  serves  a  higher  power.  Or  perhaps  it  was  for  glory,  but  not  amongst  men.  He  doesn't  quite  care  what  they  have  to  say.  Glory  amongst  the  gods,  to  be  in  their  favor  once  passing  over...  do  everything  right  and  they  will  welcome  you  with  open  arms,  won't  they  ??  He's  not  sure  what  is  right  and  wrong  anymore,  but  he  tries  his  best.

the  led  imprinted  upon  artificial  skin  flashes  from  its  normal  vivid  blue  to  fair  yellow,  flickering  back  and  forth  as  if  deciphering  a  thought. he doesn't know who nickolas is, someone he would ask about later, but  he  could  tell  by  her  tone  she  felt  sad.  probably  lonely,  too.

                       Holly  watches  as  the  LED  spins  a  bright  yellow.  Something  in  her  hurts.  Not  only  was  she  made  for  him,  but  her  identity  was  taken  from  her  the  moment  she  had  gained  consciousness  in  his  home.  He  had  taken  the  ring  from  her  temple,  made  it  easier  for  her  to  pass  through  life  without  much  of  the  treatment  other  androids  had  faced.  Was  it  a  blessing  in  disguise  ??  Most  androids  upon  becoming  deviant  had  taken  it  out  themselves,  but  she  never  had  that  opportunity.  It  was  so  odd,  having  these  thoughts  about  it...  she  wonders  if  they'd  all  think  she  was  crazy  for  it.

                        "  No.  "  She  says  after  a  moment.  Holly  wished  she  had...  she  wished  she  had  more  things  she  did  enjoy  from  that  life  with  him.  He  wasn't  entirely  the  worst...  owner...  he  didn't  abuse  her,  didn't  ever  raise  his  voice,  but  then  again  she  never  gave  him  reason  to.  Holly  was  never  built  to  say  no,  always  doing  whatever  he  asked  happily  and  with  a  smile.  Event  he  more  questionable  tasks.  "  I  wish  I  did...  but  I  can  show  you  what  they  look  like  some  time,  I'm  sure.  "  A  lips  tug  upwards,  even  if  a  bit  sad.  "  He  had  two  more,  Dobermans,  Caesar  and  Brutus,  after  the  Roman  politicians.  They  were  always  fighting  with  each  other,  it  was  fitting.  "  She  missed  them  more  than  anything  else.
