Iâve never felt as lonely as I have in the past month. Itâs scaring the hell out of me, if Iâm honest. Itâs affecting my day to day life now and has become more than just a companion of the night. More than just feeling sad and alone at night before sleep. I cried on the train to work three times last week. Silently and to myself, face turned to the window, looking at the rows of houses with the same gardens 50 times over. Iâd just finished a book that chronicled a womanâs life every five years from 5 to 45. Lately Iâve been trying to âgrow upâ, save money for a house and get my act together. I wanted to be like everyone else with a family and a settled home life. But then I read that book and felt an overwhelming sense of loss for this fictional character who had done nothing more with her life than stay in her home town, get married and have kids. I remembered that I want more for myself. I realised this right as Frank Ocean sang the words âmaybe I'm a fool to settle for a place with some nice views, maybe I should move settle down, two kids and a swimming poolâ down my headphones. It was one of those bizarre moments of clarity that was at the same time entwined with desperation and anxiety because of how far away I am from the life I envisaged for myself. My life is living me and I have no idea how to live life. I have no idea how to put the brakes on and take back control. I feel lost and alone. I really hope I can shake this soon.
