project hail mary from rocky’s perspective must’ve been so tragic.
like… youbget sent in a planned out mission with the world’s best scientists. they all die, leaving you to save the planet.
you miss your soulmate, but they’re back on eridian and youbhave to succeed in the mission if you don’t want the last 184 years to be it. you want to get old with them.
and then you find this warm, leaky alien that’s like really quiet and inly makes one type of sound through one of its body parts and it says that it’s on the same mission you are.
grace can’t even breathe on your ship so you move in.
and then grace gets thrown against the panel and he’s leaking but it’s wrong wrong wrong si you risk your life to save grace. and then grace watches you sleep even though grace has no idea how to save you if you’re dying.
one day you’ll teach grace.
and then you learn grace is only 45 years old (they sent a child on a mission???) and then the child storms out when you ask grace how he’s getting back home.
grace later says he’s not supposed to get home. there was never supposed to be a way back.
but you can share the astrophages. sure, it’ll delay your journey but with the other scientists dead there was more than enough food.
so you say goodbye to grace. he even does the goodbye dance with 2 of his limbs - as correct as he could with only 2.
and then you go home. but one circadian period the alarms start sounding and everything starts to fail. life support, navigation… you’re sure you’re dead.
until someone knocks at your door. who could it be?
so you go to erid. the journey is a blip to you- a few years. grace eats from the packages from his ship. but he seems weaker.
“should eat more, question?”
grace chuckles - he’s taken to that, knowing rocky can’t exactly understand tiny changes in face expression.
but grace lies. his cracks reopen, and it hurts to chew. he sleeps a lot.
“it’s malnutrition. the food was never supposed to last that long”
by the time you get to eridian he can barely walk, so you carry him as delicately as possible and put him in his airlock. adrian asks if you adopted an alien, but soon enough they and other food scientists and physiologists scrambling as ti what this strange creature can eat, given both its insides and outsides are mushy.
but finally you can give grace a foodthing that grace can digest and grace perks ip a little. he’s still weak, but you build him an oxygen filled enclosure and he takes to exploring it.
finally when he’s strong enough he can teach.
adrian was hesitant about keeping him but they knew how much the human meant to rocky. they even discuss particle physics these days.
