“I know I’m not.” Mike grumbled as he took a hearty swig of his mead. He liked mead far better than ale because mead smelled like honey, which reminds him of bees, which reminds him of flowers. Which reminds him of his hometown, his mother’s flower shop, and running around as a little boy in her meadow.

“I could die any month I go out there.” Mike traced the ring of water his mug left on the table. “But I have to go out there, because of my unique gift of being able to smell the damn things, which nobody else seems to have. Not even in history, no. Only me…”

He chuckled, shrugging his shoulders. The squad leader then looked out to nothing really in particular, his eyes looking towards the past.

“And besides, I’m probably the biggest and toughest guy most people have ever seen. If any one of us pathetic humans has a chance of surviving out there, it’s me.”

Mike shook his head. He went back to staring at his mug. “It’s bad enough I make my family worried half to death, all the time. To make some poor girl heartsick for me for the rest of her life, and if I force her to raise a child without me…that would be such cruelty that no young woman deserves, let alone a little kid.”

They did him so dirty in the show so I did him so good by reviving him

Preview for the comic cover! Initially brainstormed a different idea that was a bit generic, but then I got the idea of Miche in the carriage looking at a reflection of his younger self riding alongside him. And though I didn't realise it until later, I think it also works as a lil nod to the opening line of the original story "People say dreams are mirrors that reflect the heart."
