(✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): she’s collecting dust, from what i’ve seen so far (✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): [unsent] tony was (✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): [unsent] that’s /not/ tony (✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): no problem. i’ll ask someone else then
[…] (✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): i just wanted to make sure you were safe (✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): [unsent] and i wanted to see if (✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): [unsent] i thought you might (✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): i’m sorry, if i overstepped
( ✉️ → sharon carter ): She tends to do that, from time to time. A free spirit. ( ✉️ → sharon carter ): ...Are you alright? ( ... ) ( ✉️ → sharon carter ): I’m as safe as I can be. But I’m - ...I may do something rash, which is always the worst way to solve problems, but I’ve been fairly decent at picking up cues from Thor, and sometimes it works out if you don’t think things through, even if it goes against my very nature. ( ... ) ( ✉️ → sharon carter ): You haven’t overstepped. You rarely do. ( ✉️ → sharon carter ): I’m sorry if I’ve overstepped. Or put my foot in my mouth. I’m pretty good at that. As you can tell, I’m also fairly confident too. ( ✉️ → sharon carter ): ...Do you need me?

[ ✉ → BRUCE ] Heads up that Stark is off his rocker at the moment. [ ✉ → BRUCE ] I would advise avoiding him, if at all possible. If he finds you, be careful talking with him.
( ✉️ → erik ): More so than usual? ( ✉️ → erik ): Joking. Sort of. I’ve been watching the news. ( ✉️ → erik ): Are you okay? ( ✉️ → erik ): Do you need me? ( ✉️ → erik ): I haven’t left the outskirts yet. I’m...not sure I should, from what I’m seeing. The only stations that are still up aren’t actually in NYC, because of the blackout, but it seems like there’s unnatural light-sources at this point, even now. Best part about a city full of heroes and mutants, right? What are you finding in there?
Bruce checks his burner again, fingers dipping over the well-used buttons of an outdated Blackberry, the news reports gliding over the small screen, and the volume is tinny and somewhat distorted in comparison to the advanced phones he’d grown used to owning at Stark Tower. Tony preached that his family deserved ‘the latest and greatest’ in Stark technology. A sad smile reaches his face, and it only makes him feel more alone on the outskirts of town, the darkness seeming much darker outside of NYC, which glows like a beacon in the evening.
The physicist has been waiting all evening - for a text, for a sign, for a plea to come and help because they need him, and Bruce can only force himself to put the city in danger if someone begs him to. If Tony begs him to, or the Avengers, or Erik --
Anxiety quells in his gut, the longing for some sort of update, that his friends and the few people who would even notice if he disappeared were okay. He checks again almost impulsively, still seeing a severe lack of notifications in his inbox. No emails, no texts, nothing.
Bruce chews a thumb nail, mentally cataloguing the voice in his head that sounds an awful lot like his mother, chiding him for putting dirty hands in his mouth. It makes him smile in the saddest way possible, that even after nearly 45 years, he still thinks of his mom every day. Time he can never get back, he supposes.
He checks again.

I choked / on such longing I couldn’t spit out. Yes, desire is so different / when God bore you hungry.

(✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): i’m back in town (✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): would have come for a face to face but you weren’t in your usual lab space (✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): are you in the city? (✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): [unsent] do you need a place to— (✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): [unsent] people are freaking out and— (✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): [unsent] you’re good, right? (✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): do you have any idea what the hell is going on? (✉️ ➡️ smash and dash ): no one is acting like themselves and it’s more than just a little alarming
( ✉️ → sharon carter ): that makes one of us. ( ✉️ → sharon carter ): I’ve...taken a hiatus from my lab stool. Is Tony treating her right? ( ✉️ → sharon carter ): I...don’t know precisely what’s going on, no, but from what I’ve seen it isn’t good. ( ... ) ( ... ) ( ✉️ → sharon carter ): I can’t come into the city. From what I’ve seen, it’s-- there’s some sort of...projection? Of negative emotions? And if Hulk takes over without me in there to reign him in, then... ( ... ) ( ✉️ → sharon carter ): Well, we all know what happens then.
Change, I’ve come to understand, rises up like nausea: the promise of relief is what makes it bearable.

(✉ → strongest avenger): are you using my reaction to your secrets as a /reason/ for your secrets? (✉ → strongest avenger): you know, that sounds a lot like a reference to berlin (✉ → strongest avenger): which you weren’t there for, so maybe don’t do that (✉ → strongest avenger): yeah, but we /learned/ as avengers. the last time we were on different pages, we almost destroyed the world […] (✉ → strongest avenger): are you trying to make me have a panic attack right now? (✉ → strongest avenger): also, everyone drinks. we had parties, everyone got black out, because we work a stressful job. i’m blowing off steam, give me a break (✉ → strongest avenger): and i’ve been off drugs for twenty-nine years, so again, no (✉ → strongest avenger): not as pressing as erik lehnsherr in my house, bruce […] (✉ → strongest avenger): you never kept anything from me before (✉ → strongest avenger): don’t try to use my illness as an excuse for distance (✉ → strongest avenger): i have a family. /we/ have a family. my first priority is protecting that family, and we have no idea what erik is capable of […] (✉ → strongest avenger): you could’ve at least /told/ me before i walked in and saw him
( ✉️ → old glowy heart ): I’m using your reactions to most situations as a ‘reason’ for my secrets. As much as it probably pains you, I know you fairly well. ( ✉️ → old glowy heart ): It is a reference. Another thing I should ‘know when to keep my mouth shut’ about? ( ✉️ → old glowy heart ): We can’t always agree on everything. You know that’s simply not possible, as much as it would make our lives infinitely easier. I’m not taking opposite sides on purpose. That’s your job. ( ... ) ( ✉️ → old glowy heart ): You know I’m not, Tony. It’s the last thing I want. But it needs to be said despite your odd rules about things not being said. Addressing things or not addressing things doesn’t make them any less true. ( ✉️ → old glowy heart ): You’ve been blowing off steam for 35 years? That seems unlikely. ( ✉️ → old glowy heart ): /Your/ house. Right. It’s not my house, and I have to ask you permission before someone is allowed in it. I’m not 51 and capable of my own decisions. ( ... ) ( ✉️ → old glowy heart ): I kept it from you because I knew you would be angry. And... ( ... ) ( ... ) ( ✉️ → old glowy heart ): It physically makes me ill to disappoint you, and I knew you’d be disappointed. ( ✉️ → old glowy heart ): Erik is a friend. I know what he is capable of, just as much as I know what /I/ am capable of. Does that mean I should be put down like a dog too? Because I’ve made mistakes and lost control? I don’t deserve a second chance? ( ... ) ( ... ) ( ✉️ → old glowy heart ): I’m sorry. That wasn’t fair. I’m not angry with you for that. I’m sorry.
The modern physicist, like the eastern mystic, has come to see the world as a system of inseparable, interacting, and ever-moving components with the observer being an integral part of the system.

They’re gathering supplies to make a fire - Kon has been put on ‘please put the tent up to the best of your ability and if it’s bad, we’ll fix it when we get back’ duty, but Bruce has an odd amount of confidence in the young man after only just knowing him. He’s got energy, and spirit - two things Bruce hasn’t had in at least 20 years - so maybe he’s even more capable than either Erik or himself would be.
Jaunting off into the wooded area behind them, Bruce and Erik do something Bruce hasn’t done since his personal camping days, running away from the government and sleeping under bridges and inside of trees: picking up sticks.
The odd question from the previous few days tingles in his brain, and with all of the commotion, he’d forgotten to bring it up once they were actually out on the road. “Did you give Charles Xavier my number?” The head tilt is obvious, but Bruce isn’t sure how well Erik can see in the dark. “He was asking me about your...drain,” Bruce mimics with emphasis, “-- the difference in your powers since your resurrection.”
Clearing his throat, Bruce anxiously stops his exploration of the dark, forested ground, staring at Erik, “I told him I wasn’t comfortable with that until hearing permission directly from you.”

brxinixc5:
The Coluan stared and listened intently, dark eyes barely blinking as they registered the conversation and stored it away. It was by no means a recording, no, but the information held within this conversation was far too precious not to be kept in files for later use. It was the best part about the various Humanoid species of Earth: they could confirm their own scientific studies. Sure, there was a myriad of less than conversational creatures crawling on this rock’s surface, but offered nothing without unnecessary destruction of the habitat or, worse so, the organism itself. Even with their own additions of futuristic technology, Brainiac tech was not meant to be used with many of the same… Morals as the Universe at large. Querl stuck to the research already done for them for that.
They stared at the offered food for almost as long as they were staring at Bruce, gingerly taking it from his grasp and observing every angle, every fleck of glutenous fiber that constructed the consumable. “As I’ve observed in most species, yes. There are a surprising amount of living beings that follow similar principals, needing to sustain themselves in order to survive. Though-” Cutting themself off, Querl tossed the bit of pretzel to the waiting pigeons, watching the mass swarm on the morsel with a little bit of childish glee. “There are very obvious differences based on planetary structure and growth conditions.”
Sitting back on the bench, flicking absent blond synthetic hair out of his sightline, Querl watched the sky, feeling the rare ultraviolet ray spread across green skin… Rather, just the uncovered portions of their face. “Not at all,” he chuckled, arms crossing loosely over the symbol of the Brainiac Matrix spanning their uniform’s chest. They’d barely realized how relaxing it was to be in the company of a fellow intellectual, someone who wouldn’t see them as a threat just because of Vril’s reign of terror. “My species abandoned most need for sustenance long ago, before the matrices were even implemented. If I were to compare our structure I would say… It’s quite similar to your plant life. Remarkably so, in fact.” Bringing their gaze back down to Earth, Querl shrugged. “I am only half organic matter, so there’s no worries in that regard.”
A grin spread over Bruce’s face almost involuntarily, the pigeons flocking the chunk of pretzel like piranhas to blood in the water. Such a simple species, he thought, following Querl’s gaze to the sky and back. There had been a time in Bruce’s life where he would have been uncomfortable, side-by-side with an alien species, having an in-depth scientific conversation about biology. It seemed all so far away now, though, considering all of the types of humans, aliens, cyborgs, and random species he’d met throughout his time as an Avenger.
The smile extended to Brainiac. “When we are outside like this, do you feel stronger?” Curiously, Bruce turned his hand around for both of them to view, creases between the lines in his palms, the scars from countless encounters that had healed too quickly for him to make sure they didn’t leave marks, and the aging over time. Something in the gamma specialist stuttered for a moment; Bruce had noticed his lack of physical aging, since he’d turned 50. The same patterns he’d come across time and time again in his life had screeched to a halt fairly abruptly, and now, he was sure, he would remain 50 for the rest of his days, while all of his friends crossed the gaps between ages, lived their lives, and moved on.
The curl of his smile dipped with the weight of his sadness.
“I know most organic species feel stronger after more exposure to Vitamin D. Does your species work the same, in that area? I mean, we humans can start develop depression just after 4 days with no sunlight.” Bruce cleared his throat, grabbing for a piece of the pretzel, suddenly not hungry, and throwing it back to the pigeons again, handing a second one to Querl. “Humans are uh, pretty weak, when you get down to it.” We can die of heart ache, Bruce mentally snorted, feeling oddly pathetic next to a species who clearly had their shit together more than he ever would, even as a mutated human.
