Never seen anyone talk about a genderbend au in the yangchen novels, and lowkey I want to yap so..,
Gender takes a very important role in the novels, a role that is highlighted even more once you switch the characters genders. So what would a male version of Yangchen be like? I would say that pretty much the same, in the airnomad culture there arenât really any gender norms so I believe that as a guy Yangchens personality remains fairly the same. However that just applies to Yangchens personality, people would definitely treat her differently. Though in the novels we see that Yangchen is treated as a naive little girl by the Shangs and dare I say other important political figures (Northern Watertribe chief/Earth King). She has to learn to adapt and use this to her advantages. As a man I do think Yangchen would inherently be treated with more respect, however that naive little girl stereotype would become the naive airnomad stereotype. Which is why I do not think this gender change wouldnt affect very deeply Yangchens approach to how she deals with political issues, I think it would just make things easier since as âmanâ he might be trusted more to take charge or make decisions, all the while using the naive airnomad act to get the upper hand.
Kavikâs narrative as a girl becomes very interesting. I mainly say this because he is literally me, and Iâm a girl so. Letâs begin at the core, Kaviks relationship with Ksylaan, one that as women becomes far more complex. Kaylaan is the perfect girl, expected to become the perfect woman, Kavik could barely compare to her. Infact she owed her sister her life, after all she saved her. That remains pretty much the same, Kaylaan would manipulate Kavik into thinking she was less than her, less smart, less mindful, less athletic, less beautiful. In the books we see that Kavik and Kaylaan are very often referred to as handsome. Beauty can play an important role in Kaylaan and Kaviks stories as woman. For kaylaan it would be one of her weapons, she knows what men think about beautiful girls and she knows exactly how to exploit it. Kavik on the other hand keeping things faithful to the books is very very painfully insecure. I think she would pay no mind to her looks and the few times she does she is just reminded that she would never be as good as her sister, so she needs to be good in other aspects. However I do think it would be a problem in her street runner life style, Kavik wouldnât use beauty as a weapon, becuase she wouldnât know how, thatâs just something her sister does. As a handsome man Kaviks street runner life is like any others, as a beautiful girl, danger is much more evident. I also believe Kaylaans and Kaviks reunion would be much more shocking. Imaging finding your sister again after risking your life to locate her and she not only remains as condescending to you as she was before, but she is also pregnant? The speech the Kaylaan give to Kavik about Chaisee, âWhy not trust the man I love?â Would hit so much harder in many different levels.
The novels would have a different take on womanâs struggles, it would go from women in power proving they are right for their position. To woman struggling in a world that is inherently harder on them.
Yangchen felt nothing, since the beginning of their travels from Yaoping Mountainâs, till their arrival to their current hideout.
âYangchen?â Yingsu said, she felt her lightly place a hand on her shoulder, and her voice was almost like a whisper.
She was acting like she would break, but how could something empty break? Yangchen looked up to meet her eyes and was instead met with the rest of the team looking worriedly at her. They shouldnât all be focused on her, after all it was their loss too, it was their grief too. Yet she remained quite. Barely being able to hold eye contact with anyone, she would much rather keep staring at the floor. Something she has been doing constantly as of late. Everyone probably thinks she is probably rethinking the moment over, and over again. All the ways she could have stopped it, how it should have been her instead, how worried he was about her when it was him that was-
In reality yangchen was thinking about how jealous she was of the floor. The floor didnât love anyone, the floor could just be the floor, and people didnt expect anything much more than that.
â Yangchen you haven eaten anything since we arrived.â Akuudan said softly.
Yangchen raised her head again, now Yingsu was sitting beside her. Tagayum was serving a plate of food, and Juji was standing infront of a window starring of into the distance. It was not till that moment that Yangchen realized how little she wished to speak.
âTired, âm going upstairs.â Yangchen said her voice raspy.
She thought they would argue against it, they would tell her to eat and then go upstairs.
âYeah, go get some sleep. I will prepare a good breakfast in the morning.â Tagayum said and then turned with the plate of food towards the window were Jujinta was standing. Akuudan let out a tired sigh and gave her a half hearted smile, Yingsu then stood up and stretched her a hand to help her stand.
And so she left, the atmosphere still heavy and quiet. Yangchen gave the room a brief look before heading up, she realized then that something had changed forever between the team.
When she got to the bedroom door she couldnât bring herself to open it, she just stared at it. Because if he wasnât down stairs with the team, and Juji did not see anyone outside, then he must be in the bedroom. And if he wasnât in their bedroom, then he was truly gone.
Yangchen felt warm tears running down her face, and suddenly her chest ached, it ached more than any wound she had ever received. She wanted to go in the room and find him on the desk working on some paper he wanted to discuss with her. She wanted so badly to run in and hug him and never let go again, to be so close to him she could hear his heart beat, and feel his breathing, and hear his laugh. Yangchen cried quitely, she sank into the floor and placed her hands firmly against it. She had to remember, she didnât feel anything because she was like the floor, she was steady like it, and she remained constant like it. And just like before the ache didnât leave.
In a few years here would be a vague memory that a man worked with both the white lotus and avatar yangchen, and then that would be forgotten too. Goodbye âMasterâ Kavik, we hardly knew you.
In fact do that for all of yangchens team avatar.
No like Iâm searoiusly pissed, we arenât getting anything after this. This breaks my heart for the people who worked on this so hard.

So umm the Atla movie keeps getting leaked and paramount couldnât care less. I feel so sad for the people who worked (SIX YEARS!!!) on it. The thing is that it looks SO good, I saw them and shed tear. But thatâs enough, we dont even have a proper trailer yet. I need everyone say sike.
I like to believe that over the centuries Avatar Yangchen became such a spiritual symbol that history books dont mention her ever having a team or having companions, like people thought she was so holy that she did everything by herself, which made people glorify her even more. Like even Aang ,who in his lifetime had to deeply research airnomad culture in order to keep it alive, never came across anything that implied Avatar Yangchen had companions.
Imagine one day the gaang is researching things of the white lotus ( with irohs help ofc) and there is a paper Sokka was reading about something really nerdy, and Aang walks behind him and glances over his shoulder, and his like âHey did katara write that?â And Sokka is like â No dude, this was written hundreds of years ago. Itâs actually really interesting, katara could never write something like this. It doesnât even look remotely close to her handwriting.â Aang realizes Sokka is right, it doesnât look like Kataraâs handwriting at all. But still he genuinely felt that he had seen that type of handwriting before and the only person that came to his mind was Katara. So he asks Sokka who wrote it and Sokka says â Some guy named Master Kavik, I think, Iâm not really sure the name is kind of blurred.â The name doesnât ring any bells to Aang of anyone he knew now or before he got stuck in the iceberg, so he just brushes it off.
The constant heartbreak Yangchen would go through seeing how as years go by her team and companions erased from history and she is just getting more glorified because of it, and she just wants to scream to the world that she couldnât even have done more than half of the things she did if it werenât for her team.
The night was starless, but the moon was still in sight, there was not the slightest movement of breeze and aang felt like he was suffocating. In fact he was pretty sure he was dying, he felt like he had run out of air to breathe and every second was getting closer to his last. This was it Avatar Aang, the last airbender, would die on starless night, with lack of wind, because he suffacated. How ironic that the last airbender ran out of breath, or maybe it was the perfect paradoxical ending to his inadverted existence. Aang grasped as his collar trying to undo the tightnes it was holding against his neck. Alas he is finally being punished, after all it was because of him that his people were gone, he could finally get what he deserves and disappear with the rest of them. âHa..â Aang said breathlessly, if only it were that easy. Because Aang wasnât just the last airbender he was also the Avatar, and dying at the mere age of 17 would mean he would leave his next life with a whole lot to deal with, and the world wasnt in the best condition currently to await the next avatars coming of age. Aang began to slowly breathe in and out as his knees gave up on him and he was left kneeling on the floor. So he tried again in and out, as he finally managed to somewhat undo the robes near his collar. In and out until he could feel some air entering his lungs. Was it selfish that in the back of his mind he still wished that he would just go like his people. He finds himself wishing that everyday would be his last, how egotistical he was. Breath in and out until his vision unblurred, he breathed in and out until he could finally just breathe. As he final able to recompose himself aang felt a slight breeze, he would like to think it was his own element telling him he wasnât alone, after all now more than ever the skyâs belonged solely to the avatar. However he was sure he could blow a soft whistle that would move more air than that breeze. What a sick joke this all was. Aang could feel hot tears coming down his face and he held his hand against his heart, what a sick joke it was that he kept on living, that he was now looking for signs of people who were so alive in a mere miserable breeze. Aang buried his face into his hands as his breath became shakier and he could feel himself running out of breathe. âAang, itâs okay.â Aang could almost hear a voice as he felt a hand placed against his back. âSweatheart, you are okay.â The voice said again and Aang suddenly felt a hand pulling his hands away from his face. Katara looked at Aang anxiously, she wiped away his tears and grabbed his hands tightly. Aang could feel himself breathe in and out again, âKatara, I think I am dying.â Aang said almost choking. â No you are not Aang, you are going to be alright, okay? You are not alone sweeatheart.â Katara said looking lovingly at him. Aang could still feel tears running down his face and he hugged katara as tightly as he could, katara rubbed slow circles against his back as she rested her head on his shoulder. Everyday on the back of his mind Aang wishes it would be his last, and everyday katara reminds him why it shouldnât.
