Hughie had finally landed a job at Vought after trying for ages. Superheroes had always been a massive part of his life and working at Vought was his way of showing how much their life saving deeds meant to him, it was his own small tribute to them!
Surprisingly, he had managed to land one of the highest level assistant positions available.. working as Ashley’s personal secretary. This meant he would be encountering The Seven on a regular basis!
and on his very first day while he was talking with Ashley and writing down some of the stuff she was saying until Homelander walked up to them
“Hey Ashley... Who’s this?” Homelander narrowed his eyes, keeping his voice low
Before Hughie could speak, Ashley turned around quickly glancing between the two of them with a strained and anxious expression on her face “Oh! Uhm this is my new secretary, Hughie Campbell!” She gestured to Hughie her tone subtly reassuring Homelander that this new guy was nobody to worry about
Homelander glanced Hughie up and down with an unreadable look before extending his hand for Hughie to shake “Well Hughie, it’s a pleasure meeting you”
Hughie felt a sudden rush of excitement mixed with deep discomfort forcing a smile he took Homelander’s hand “Oh trust me, the pleasure is all mine sir!” his voice slightly cracked
The handshake lasted a moment longer than it should have and when they finally pulled apart Hughie gave Homelander a quick sharp nod
Homelander stared at Hughie his eyes filled with a strange curiosity he glanced between Ashley and Hughie before breaking the silence “Alright I’ve got to go now... It was nice meeting you, Mister Campbell” Homelander gave Hughie a quick smile before he nodded and turned on his heel, his American flag cape swaying behind him as he walked away.
Hughie stood frozen for a moment.. He couldn't believe what just happened. Ashley who had already started walking away realized he wasn't following and snapped him right back to reality
“Hughie!? Come on what are you waiting for?”
“Ah, sorry!” Hughie called out quickly jogging to catch up with her. he still simply couldn't get Homelander out of his mind... Why did Homelander look at him like that?
At the end of the day, Hughie went home but the encounter continued to play over and over again in his head. After changing out of his work clothes he threw together some dinner and while it cooked he spread his new work files and papers across the coffee table facing the TV he grabbed his plate and switched the TV on and finally sat down to relax after the long day at his new job.
The first thing that flashed onto the bright screen was Homelander’s face
Hughie stared at the screen for a long moment a knot slowly forming in his stomach before he quickly switched to a random channel.
He forced himself to eat his eyes scanning the Vought papers on the table to distract himself.
A couple of hours later, exhaustion took over Hughie fell asleep right there on the couch, the TV still on in the background.. papers scattered across the table, and his empty plate resting on the floor
The next day at work, Hughie was following Ashley around like usual when they passed Homelander in the hallway
As they crossed paths, Hughie and Homelander locked eyes holding the stare for an unnecessary amount of time and when Hughie finally looked away to focus on Ashley, his heart was pounding violently against his ribs...
Down the hall, Homelander’s super hearing picked up the frantic rhythm of Hughie's heartbeat. A smirk spread across Homelander’s face the moment he realised that he's the reason why Hughie's heart is beating so damn fast.
Forcing himself to pull it together, Hughie spent the next few hours frantically trailing Ashley through the tower. By the time he finally collapsed into his office chair, his legs were numb and right when he thought he could finally rest for even just a moment he heard knock on the door.
Hughie buried his face in his hands and groaned “Come on in!”
The door creaked open and Homelander stepped into the room. Hughie immediately scrambled to his feet, his chair screeching against the floor “Uh Homelander! S-sir!..” he stammered before offering a painfully awkward smile “What... what are you doing here?”
“Oh nothing” Homelander’s eyes wandered casually around the small office before locking onto Hughie “Just wanted to see how the new guy is holding up you know? I’ve seen you following Ashley around all day. You must be exhausted... ”
“No no! Of course not!” Hughie let out a high pitched nervous chuckle
Homelander closed the distance, stepping right up to the edge of the desk.. Pure panic washed over Hughie, he subconsciously took a step back
“What's the matter with you?” Homelander asked tilting his head just slightly
“What?” Hughie’s hand flew to the back of his neck rubbing it nervously
“Every time I'm near you, your heart is always pounding” Homelanders voice dropped to a low predatory purr
Hughie froze... His throat went completely dry, he didn't know what to say, his hands dropped to his sides to fidget uselessly with the hem of his suit's jacket.
“Are you scared, Mister Campbell?”
Hughie answered almost too quickly “No!” he exclaimed
He immediately caught himself his face burning. He lowered his voice, realizing how incredibly loud he must have sounded in the quiet room. “Of course not... It's just you know uhm... I've been a massive fan of yours for as long as I can remember. Since I was a kid, really. And now I'm here, and I get to see you every day. I mean... it's just really exciting!"
Homelander laughed “Well! I am always happy to meet fans... It's the best part of the job honestly.”
He smiled and tilted his head, looking Hughie up and down he walked across the room to stand right next to Hughie's desk.. The space suddenly felt much smaller. Homelander extended his arm and rested a heavy solid hand right on Hughie’s shoulder
"So, what are you working on right now?" Homelander asked
Was he trying to keep the conversation going...?
Hughie thought to himself. His brain totally stalled for a second under the weight of Homelander’s hand he forced his eyes to stay fixed on his computer screen before he answered
“You know just uh... handling some emails and a bunch of other stuff” Hughie stammered trying to sound professional but failing miserably “It's pretty boring honestly. Unlike your job of course! Being the world’s greatest hero must be a lot of fun, every single day must be one hell of an adventure”
Homelander didn't answer right away. He just stared down at Hughie his expression unreadable and for a second the silence in the office was deafening.
“Yeah it can be fun I guess” Homelander murmured
He finally pulled his hand away from Hughie’s shoulder but not before giving his back a lingering pat that made Hughie slightly stumble forward
“I might have to go now, before everyone starts looking for me” Homelander mumbled he rolled his eyes playfully making a face like a teenager trying to escape chores... It was a shockingly normal human gesture
“No problem! Go right ahead!” Hughie blurted out, his voice squeaking slightly “Don't let me keep you! Talk to you later... ha...”
Hughie trailed off wishing he could just stop talking.
Homelander just gave him a slow nod, a small smile playing on his lips before he turned on his heel and walked out of the room.
Hughie practically collapsed backward into his office chair his knees feeling like jelly. He stared at the empty doorway for a long time listening to the faint sound of the cape rustling down the hallway.
