 I had heard a little bit about Davey Lanes music through friends of mine, who were whole hearted devotees of his music. But unfortunately for me, he fell upon that list of “Oh yeah I’ll check it out!” Not for any other reason, than my attention span is minute and attention needs to be demanded. A common problem in todays society I feel. But it wasn’t until a friend of mine invited me along to his album launch at Newtown social club. Upon receiving and accepting the invitation I decided it was time to check off that unmarked box in my to do music list. Thank god I did, for Davey is making some of the most interesting and well written rock music I’ve come across in a long time. He was kind enough to spare a few days indulging my silly questions.

Good way to be. Who are three artists (of any kind) who have played a part in shaping  your mind?

1. Well, to state the bleeding obvious, The Beatles are the tip top for me. I learned how to put songs together from picking out their chords when I was much younger. To this day, my nerdy fascination with them is as strong as ever. I've hosed a shitload of money on those cunts over the years. 2. Todd Rundgren - a music innovator, incredible songwriter/musician/producer. I aspire to push what I do further because of him. 3. Tim & Eric - believe it or not, I apply their approach to comedy to my music. "What would Tim and Eric do?" I think to myself when writing songs. Make people feel as uncomfortable as possible, and when there's a glimmer of respite, or release, make them feel more uncomfortable, then let 'em back down when they've given up hope, that's what.

Absolutely. I tend to get inspiration from all kinds of people...its a really great feeling transcribing one art form into aspects of another. I also have quite a soft spot for humour in music...so I get it.

Totally, Nick Lowe's another huge inspiration. His songs are funny as hell without ever veering into novelty territory. All sorts of art inspire me, a visit to the gallery can spark me off, but because that's an avenue of art I don't really understand. I’m just not that good at articulating how or why!

Well, we all have our merits in different places...one of yours is clearly songwriting. I haven't heard Nick Lowe, I'll make sure to check him out. I've been reading a lot about PJ Harvey recently, and she talks about bringing a sense of humour to her work quite a lot...almost satirising melodrama of the extremes in her music.

Absolutely, Nick Lowe is a true master. Check out Quiet Please, it's a good comp. Dry humour in music is really important for me. There's nothing more skull-crushingly boring than an acoustic guy singing earnest, po-faced songs about the fuckin sea or whatever. Make me laugh dammit! Me ol' mucker Tim Rogers is very good at it. Laura Imbruglia's another local songwriter who writes great funny songs. Self-depreciation is an underused device in songwriting and can be so effective when done right.

Laura Imbruglia is dynamite from the songs I have heard. So you are currently on a road trip. Where are you headed and whats your current soundtrack?

I am listening to a new remaster of Wings' Venus And Mars, it just arrived in the post today.Like McCartney needs any more of my fuckin money! It ain't anything life changing but it's got some pretty rad pop songs on it.

I'm all about a good pop song...more and more as the day goes by actually....To be honest, I've actually been playing “Love Is Not An Option” (of Atonally Young) all day at work haha. Catchy little fucker that one.

Haha, yes it's the straightest song on the record, but it's a total FM radio pop smash. But one from 1978. I'm always ahead of the game!

Hahaha, yeah it definitely is the pop gem amongst a rather eclectic mix of songs...I'm looking forward to getting to know it. To be honest with you, I'm a very new fan. I bought all three CDs when I saw you play at your Album Launch for "Atonally Young" on Saturday night. It really was a great show man.

Oh cheers! Thanks so much. That makes me happy. It's been hard to get folks to come down to shows, to the point where going on tour is costing me a lot of money! Which sucks, coz I've got such a great band and all we wanna do is play...So to know there's some folks who are coming along not knowing much and leave digging it is reassuring!

But that's just the way it is, I ain't complaining...it's no different for any other independent group...

I think it helps to have a passionate fan base who really want to share. You have some good people spreading the word. Do you find its quite hard to translate...Like...I find with my music, the hardest part is actually getting people to listen in the first place...and it makes it really difficult, because you just wanna play all the time, but the more you play, the further you spread the crowd.

Dude, you've absolutely hit the nail on the head. The challenge is absolutely getting folks to listen in the first place.

Davey-Heya! Good to go for a lil while if you are!

Sweeeeet. If you could pick any person (living or dead) to play a game of beer pong with, who would it be?

I've never played beer pong but I reckon I'd like to play it with Rod "The Mod" Stewart (of Downtown Train fame). He's good at soccer so I reckon he'd lay down a hefty challenge, and he's a raconteur so could throw me off my game with as many Faces war stories as he likes. He also was married to Britt Eklund so he's welcome to tell me all about her if he likes too.

I feel like distraction is a more effective skill to have than aim, in beer pong...then again, I'm a horrid shot. Do you have a favourite number?

Number 9 seems to be one that recurs in one way or another for me. Maybe it's the Lennon fixation though.

In your opinion, what is the most digesting word in the english language?

Digesting?…Disgusting?

I reckon something like squelch...even though its a great word...its very...squishy sounding.

Putrid is a particularly effective word. It's as strong as it phonetically suggests. Pungent is just as strong but also has positive cheese connotations.

Love me a pungent cheese…Putrid, is a very effective word. What is the most inspiring film you have seen lately?

So do I. Film I've seen lately? I don't watch heaps of films as I have the attention span of a gnat, but The Grand Budapest Hotel was the last truly moving film I've seen. It's a fuckin work of incredibly beautiful art and it's up there with Rushmore for me. Wes Anderson has those distinctive devices that he uses in his films, sometimes even possibly overuses, but they're distinctively HIS so why the fuck not go to town on 'em? I guess It reminded me that I've been writing songs long enough to have evolved from shameless pastiche of my favourite artists into something that's vaguely my own, even though there's nothing I do that hasn't been done many times before. But, I digress...

Well, all art is reinterpretation in some kind...thus rendering it all original...its a nice concept. Layer upon layer of individuality.

That's it...I figured out how to write songs by getting inside the songs I love and figuring out just what it is about them that I love. Chord changes, melodic structures etc...I've just been piling all these tricks on top of each other for the last couple of years for my own songs. Cherry picking tricks and applying them to what I do. I'm shithouse at jigsaw puzzles but this does me just fine!

Songs are pretty complex jigsaws to figure out haha. I think I learned to write by listening to the songs and artists I love also...but I could never figure out much about the music, I could definitely take away the honesty in their emotions. A sense of abandon. Did you play a show tonight?

Who are your favourite songwriters? No, no show tonight, a rare Saturday night off...

Wonderful! Patti Smith. Joni Mitchell and Connor Oberst are a few who really stuck out for me growing up...Very lyrical....I'm really into this artist Baths at the moment...I find his lyrics intense as fuck...but they aren't straightforward, yet they convey so much emotion and feeling to them. I like anything that can really get your guts…Fiona Apple is also rocking my world currently

Yup, you might like Paul Westerberg if you haven't already heard of him. Check out his record Stereo/Mono, or any record by his and Tommy Stinson's group The Replacements. I guess I came from more a musical background with songwriting but I love that same lyrical sensibility, and lyrics have become so important to me in recent times. My older Pictures songs were so slight lyrically I can't listen to them any more. If someone can tell a story or weave a tale, then great, but folks who can do that well are few and far between. If something's ripping yer heart open and you're honest about it, I'll believe it.

Amen to that man. I think at the end of the day, falsity is incredibly transparent. Honesty makes an excellent songwriter, lyrical or not, you can really feel it.

Right on! Yeah, I can't stand songwriters who are slaves to a shtick that's maybe gained them some notoriety or popularity, transparent is exactly the word.  Same with artists or bands who are incapable of being themselves and with every record have to follow whatever has been popular in the last 6 months. What happens when you discover you've actually got something you want to say? You painted yourself into a corner and tough luck to em. The amount of shaggy -haired, moustachioed rock bands who got a short back and sides and bought a fuckin' delay pedal when Kings Of Leon suddenly turned into U2!!?? Please! Sorry, I was ramping up to a rant there. Reset.

I do get what you mean though....I'm sure it comes from a warm hearted place...you want better for them right?

It was a Ghostbusters 2 action figure of Winston Zeddmore. Fuck knows why, he was hardly Peter Venkmann but I think I remember I really liked the colour of his suit. It was aquamarine.

First time I saw Simo Soo, was at NOGOOD winter festival…he seemed real shy and real sweet…Like a merman in dope pastel sneakers. His live set was passionate, and his music at the very least, was passionate as fuck. After stumbling across the soundtrack for a video he did for the Sydney Festival, and a few social interactions, I thought it was time to ask Simo about his highly intense, and moving electronic music.

If you were a kind of cake...what kind of cake would you be...and why?

I’d be some kinda strawberry cake with heaps of sprinkles on top itd be soy tho but itd still be pretty great

Sounds...kind of delicious actually...Not huge on the soy...but the concept of it in cake kind of works for me for some reason. Nutty.

It is quite affecting music. Could you tell me a little about the EP and how you came to create it?

This year I've just been releasing tiny EPs, I have another coming out in a couple weeks, whilst I've been finishing my new album. I have a really short attention span with making music like I'll make something and just put it out straight away so putting out a bunch of EPs has helped me keep the album tracks to myself haha. I’d always wanted to an instrumental EP so i could focus on production only for a minute. For a while i was writing beats to send to kinda famous internet rappers as well, like sending them unsolicited kinda thing…But yes i thought it’d be really cool to put out a bunch of tracks with no vocals and try and approach emotions and feelings and such that way through music

Amazing. Thats exactly what I do…I record home demos and I just whack them up. I get in trouble for not holding on to songs.

Hahah i think most of the time its a totally great thing tho, like its a recording of a very specific moment not something thats been played with for months.

I am really constantly amazed by electronic music…I find it so creative…It kind of reminds me of a modern classical…..Like what Beethoven would be doing if he were making music now…How did you find yourself making music, and how much has your music progressed since you started?

Beethoven would be making some Aphex Twin shit if he were alive right now…I actually grew up playing classical.

At about 8 or 9 i stopped then started playing guitar and starting punk bands around 11…when i was about 16 i started making beats on fruity loops…Just like noise stuff. When i started Simo Soo it was kinda like noise dance music with yelling…which it still kinda is hahah…but maybe a bit cleaned up + i can rap much better now.

Pixie Punto Pistola. Party Party Party. Princess of Sydney night life, notorious unicorn and a “don’t fuck with me” aura that oozes from her as if she had walked straight out of a sarcastic nineties cartoon about hot teens who really couldn’t give a fuck. That’s probably why I married her. I met Pixie at a warehouse party, hosted by our mutual friend Tonye…Tonye and I had met while she was doing a set at MUM and had lost her wallet…I got her a couple of vodka cranberries, and she supplied me with hilarious banter for a couple of hours…anyway…So here I was at this warehouse party, no clue who anybody else was and feeling particularly shy and out of place. Tonye introduces me to Steph, who by this time had consumed more than her fair share of acid punch and didn’t seem to feel so well. I made it my mission then and there to draw her attention to all of the beautiful things that surrounded her…also it was kinda funny to watch her walk around in circles with her head cast to the ceiling. Naturally it blossomed into a beautiful relationship. She is a warm hearted, firey soul… and hot dayum does she know how to pick a good tune. This weekend she is taking over Tokyo Sing Song, for a Pixie extravaganza. Be there or be triangle.

Honestly i think i would get my nearest and dearest (my closest 10- 20 friends) buy a bunch of drugs and alcohol and get wasted together... i would make sure there was a good stereo system for dancing, and also instruments for the inevitable  sing along during the wind down period, most of my friends are quite musically gifted. I guess i would probably start at Earl's Juke Joint and order a whiskey sour or an old fashion…and because i have probably finished my drink within 15 mins of arriving...i would probably order at least 1 more of said drink on the sly

What started your fascination with the pop princess, and began your own rise to supreme pop pretty?

Beyonce is pretty much my god, i mean if she was to create like her own religion i would totally be down for that. I started this obsession when i was like 10 or 11? her first album came out and i was like IN LOVE with her. one of her songs was released on my birthday and that was the moment i was like "omg this bitch is my queen!" Since then i've been following everything she does. she’s just this perfect person, she’s flawless and its like she can never do anything wrong. and when i started calling myself Benyonce’, it was more of me channeling my inner diva. When i go out into the city and meet new people i become this diva and like have the confidence to be a sassy ass bitch.

Hahaha its fun to have a bit of a disguise. Now it is clear that you are a pretty sassy and fabulous diva queen...But something else that I have noticed, is that you also are quite vocal in sticking up for the underdog and vocalising your opinion in relation to bullying. Would you mind telling me bit about your experience in both bullying, and the responses you have had for speaking out?

Why thank you darling! Well this whole diva/sassy persona has come from years of being put down and told to not be who i want to be i guess.

When i started high school, I went to an all boys school in Bankstown so you can imagine how ridiculous this story is going to be already right? Throughout high school i feel like i was always myself, and still to this day I’ve always stayed true to myself. I did have friends but they were kinda like the plastics from mean girls, like one friend i had was pretty much a mix of Ja'mie and Regina George. During high school i became friends with this amazing person, (who i still am friends with to this day) and pretty much came out to him and he was gay himself so i felt like i had someone i could talk to about it all. Then i started telling friends about it and whatever and then other boys found out and you can imagine what happened after that. 

Pretty much during my time at that school i had food thrown at me, had a page on Bebo (lol bebo so 2007) made about me being emo and fat, i was in 3 physical altercations, none in which i retaliated because I don’t believe in physical violence except for that one time i got mad bitch crazy and almost stabbed someone with a screw driver because he talked shit about my mum. I had days where i would stay in bed and pretend to be sick because i was scared for my safety.

It was a catholic school so I tried to get shit done about it but the school didn’t wanna get a bad rep if I went to the police and all that shit so basically I packed up my shit and left that school which was the best thing i ever did. I went to a co-ed school, found some girlfriends and basically became the queen bee of the school.

Amazing.

I always feel for people who go through bullying. i think its one of the most horrific things that someone can go through growing up, and it doesn’t stop when you leave school either. I know people always so like "it's just words, don't listen" but its so hard when you hear those nasty comments on a regular basis, it sets in your mind that thats what you are. My best advice to someone who is going through any form of bullying is, basically it gets better. The people who bully you never grow up, they will always be that nasty person and you will grow up and become a strong and amazing person.

I like to think thats what i did. Those comments and experiences really made me who i am today. Im a strong person and i always stand up for what i believe, no matter what some stupid person with a mullet said to me. y'know?

Incredibly wise advice, and I absolutely relate. Hopefully the more people share their experiences, the more open and accepting the world will become.

On a lighter note, where did the name "The Internet Princess" come from?

I was searching on tumblr one day, i was so into this whole like seapunk thing that happened and i saw this picture of this like picture someone drew, it was like a cartoon thing and it was a crown that said "Internet Princess" and i fell in love straight away. It was so me!! Literally everyone i know says to me "i loved your post on facebook" or "omg that thing you shared was amazing" or like asking me about celebrity shit like Amanda Bynes or Beyonce.  So pretty much i adopted that name for myself because I’m on the internet every hour that I’m not sleeping (I don’t sleep much) and I’m a princess, obviously. haha

And what a princess you are! Bow down bitches.

Always keeping up with the trends. I LOVE IT! it's so much easier. I’m one of those people that randomly thinks of an amazing song i haven’t heard in like a million years and i can just search it and listen to it.

Thus must be the reason you have recently found yourself in high demand as a DJ. How are you finding your new found career?

Haha! it's probably one of the best things that I’m involved in. music is one of my fave things ever so being able to play music and make people get excited about songs and music just makes me so happy.

Favourite place to play?

Homosocial. Always… I love the gays. you play any song and they know all the words get so into it

It is always such fun! It is so nice to come together for a night of gay camaraderie, in an environment that isn't in the slightest bit hostile or judgey...Which unfortunately can be the atmosphere at a lot of gay do's.

I first caught glimpse of Zsa Zsa LaFine, twisting on a dance floor to The Whipped Cream Chargers at MUM (The World Bar). She was with a good friend of mine Bianca. Together they were this amazing duo. You could spot them across any room, no matter how dark or crowded it was. In my head I saw them as these two fierce gothic princesses. Always dressed to the tees, looking like the twisted sisters meets betty paige. The first time I met Zsa Zsa properly, was when I played tag along to a business meeting, between herself and my beautiful wife Pixie about an upcoming show. It was early in the day, yet true to form when we arrived she was dressed to the nines. Zsa Zsa has been quickly been making a name for herself as a multitalented creative around the Sydney alternative scene, putting on performance art and cabaret performances, sewing her own ghoulish/glamorous creations, and painting her unique brand of gothic cuteness all over town. Next friday night for Halloween, Zsa Zsa will be creating a dark and transporting installation at The World Bar…I thought in celebration of this festive time of year we would sit down and talk all things horror. 

If you were a cake, what kind of cake would you be and why?

Strawberry cheesecake! is the fist thing that comes to mind, because I can't eat it anymore (because I found out I'm lactose intolerant) and I think about it a lot + it's totally cute and super sweet...I wish my first response was something goth sexy but it not. I’ll put you spiders on it!

Tricky question! All the people I look up to have really tight aesthetics. I'd like to sew for John Waters as in create costumes for a (imaginary future) film he's making. But I really just like making one off pieces for people I actually know and like.

Super typical. How do you combat that personally? Apart from come to terms with the fact that people may think you have a resting bitchface…or that people just have a natural inclination to tear down somebody who seems strong.

Yeah I think people make assumptions about what I do on a superficial level but I'm fine with that because my work does operate on a purely aesthetic level as well as having deeper meanings, it is up to the viewer to decide how far they want to think into things. I don't want to ram concepts down peoples throats.

Happiness is fleeting and I think people pursue it as something permanent, like finishing a video game, which is similar to racing toward the grave (not in the cool way). I like the parts where my mind slows down because I'm so focused on what I'm working on or a really cool song that I can vogue to is on, or just before I fall asleep after I've been working all day and made something cool or having a really involved discussion about solving all the worlds problems with someone I like a lot, or boozing and rampaging with people I like. So I guess happiness relates to productivity and distraction and the right people (and alcohol). That's a really long answer.

Do you remember those two girls in high school who just didn’t give a fuck? For me, Betty (or as I knew her then; Liz) was one of those girls. She came as part of the Betty/Anna two for one package. Never afraid to voice an opinion, sporting a ripped Van Halen tee and jeans over your run of the mill supre ra ra skirt. In my head they were like a female Wayne and Garth, or a Punk as Romy and Michelle. The first time I got properly plastered was with these two. I remember nonchalantly taking a swig from a baileys bottle….then naturally gagging and  expelling the horrid death liquid all across my toes, and cementing my uncool status for the rest of the evening. If you were a cake, what kind of cake would you be and why?

Oh geez, blood cake I reckon. I'm not much for sweets so wouldn't want to do that to someone. Blood cake is versatile, an acquired taste and worth getting to know.

Hahahaha OINK. Did you love blood cake right off the bat? Or was it also an acquired taste type scenario for you?

I knew I wanted to love it but never really had the chance to try it until about two years ago. I had it first at Porteno so if I was going to like it anywhere, it was going to be there. I've certainly made up for lost time since then. I highly recommend.

I'll make sure to tick it off my bucket list just for you. What is the most outrageous cooking creation you have invented and what was the occasion?

In terms of causing actual outrage? I tried once to make a salt crusted beef loin but completely fucked it up - I just ended up putting a shit tonne of salt on a loin and cooking it until it was grey. We were all so thirsty that before the main course was eaten everyone had downed at least a bottle of wine each and one dinner party guest ended up falling asleep at the table. But in terms of intensity, bone marrow followed by duck fat croutons and blood cake for a friend's farewell. Yikes.

I think I remember seeing photos...you do have this ability to make a fussy eater particularly intrigued with foods they never would have imagined putting near their mouth.

Thank you! It's a challenge cooking fancy things on a budget - offal is tricky but worth it financially and for flavour.

Offal is basically secondary cuts, nasty bits and organs. 

How many spatulas should one have in their kitchen?

Oh god! Don't get me started on spatulas! I've got one metal one which has been banished away from my pots and pans and one fucking awful plastic one. You need at least two but make them good quality, for my peace of mind.

Haha I will make sure that I do...I got a massive hard on for the Nigella Lawson cooking utensil selection at Victorias Basement. It was a weird time for me.

On the topic of celebrity chefs...and hard ons...Is their a particular chef that gets you hot in the tots?

Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert are a pretty sexy couple, I'd love to see them kiss. And a young Marco Pierre White. They all do it for me. I think chefs are a lot like rockstars

I'm ashamed to not know who any of these people are. Its a shame more rock stars aren't a little more like chefs.

I think if rockstars were more like chefs there'd be complete anarchy. Chefs are hardcore. Don't be friends with chefs if you value your liver.

That I'm not surprised by, Is there an Elizabeth cocktail?

Most of the best cocktails I made in my years bartending were pretty classic - usually gin, apple, cucumber, egg white and lemon juice in any number of incarnations but that combination is absolutely perfect for my taste. Tart, a little sweet and really fresh.

Amazing. One of my favourites is a spring martini, which is bombay, cloudy apple, cucumber and mint. Shit  I'm thirsty.

It is coming along alright...I'm lacking a lot of ingredients I want. What began your glorious foodie journey?

It's hard to say exactly, it's ebbed and flowed to wildly for years. I always loved watching my mum cook and she  looked so effortless doing it. I trained briefly for a career in cooking and it really destroyed my passion so that was a hard time. I think really it began when I was little and realized that a combination of ingredients tasted better than them on their own, I think that's when you know you're cooking.

Noiiiiiiiice. My mum is only just discovering cooking now...she was always an excellent orderer though.

On a brief side note...would balsamic work with olive oil as a marinade for my salmon? I HAVE NO INGREDIENTS.

It absolutely will, just be careful you don't leave it too long as the acid will begin cooking the salmon and might give you a funny texture. 

Wonderful! If you went on a reality cooking show, and they asked you to play a character...what would your character be? What would betty bring do the table?

I think a bit of a dark horse. While I love my name, I think "Betty" immediately conjures up kitsch imagery and sugary things. I like to think of my cooking as humble but modern so I think my character might surprise those playing along at home.

My crime... Maybe I got curious about the most taboo of game meats. My last supper probably something simple - vegemite toast or anything at all that my mum has made. As long as whoever made it loved me I wouldn't care what it was.

That is so sweet! Is a large part of your love for food about the experience of sharing it with people you love and coming together?

Oh god yeah. Absolutely. My favourite part of any meal is seeing the look on someone's face when they eat it. I truly believe that the most intimate and loving act is in sharing food. It's so primal. I love it.

I really understand that. I love cooking, but I usually will only cook a) If I'm trying to sort my life out and be routined or b)for someone else

Defs. I'd probably eat such boring and awful food if I lived alone.

Next big cooking adventure! A friend who owns a bar has asked me to contribute to his menu  so I'm procrastinating on that. As well as a very exciting plan with a few food friends for my  backyard in late spring. Sounds wonderful! I love spring garden parties. Last question...What is happiness to  you?

To me, listening to Lord Muk is an etherous experience. His music reminds me of…candles, sex and steel wool. Its forlorn yet eerily romantic… a voice that drips like warm treacle into a bubbling pot of emotion, more than capable of dealing out a red hot scalding. I first met Lord Muk on the door of the infamous World Bar, when he was tending the door, fierce yet baby faced and a don’t fuck with me frown. Both being a part of the wallpaper on a Friday night, we struck up a troubadour type friendship…the kind where one flirts incessantly with the uninterested counterpart.

It's topic of much debate on who gets to become a rat - I'm a little more open minded than the others. It's a very spiritual experience - involves candles - a starry night - some grandiose talk about our place in the universe - potentially some substance - and most likely 'Playing With Fire' my Spacemen 3 or at least some variable transcendental psych album…and costume changes.

How open is your mind on a scale of purple to octopus?

Who is Lord Muk?

Me. Well a louder part of me. An alter ego that's all powerful but with delusions of grandeur. A caricature of masculinity and prophets and what not.

The name itself came from when I was little,lounging around the house and I was being lazy and wanted something my grandparents would say "Who do you think you are? Lord muck?"

I mean there's a lot to be said about how a mind develops through childhood and into early adolescents. What we consciously and subconsciously gravitate to when we're "adults" is based heavily on conditioning through infancy and that's so evident

Although I think if you've grown as a strong character and have the capacity to be self sufficient by…say 16 or something like that then I'd say it stops there and it's nurture… but if you've grown up being so susceptible to exterior influences then everything around you has the ability to change you. It's got a lot to do with the means of self actualization in a certain context….Tried to condense as much as I could.

  Sneyonce’ first contacted me on behalf of publicity firm Shake Appeal. She had supposedly gotten wind of my music, from the cool kids at world bar, and promptly took initiative, suggesting that I come in for an interview with her boss Nik. I did my research, and heard nothing but wonderful things about this lady who’s name I wasn’t particularly sure how to pronounce…(not to mention dreaded accidentally calling sneeze). When I arrived for my first meeting at Shake Appeal…after wandering lost and nervous through warehouse spaces….Sneha was at a desk to my immediate right. I was introduced to the team, one of which at the time was my banging hot (straight) boyfriend Lord Muk. One conversation with Trops and Alissa was all it took for me to be sold on them…I wasn’t even out for a publicist…being freakishly controlling of my art, I enjoyed doing it all myself. But somehow…the dynamic of the place…the passion in it all sucked me in immediately. Sneyonce’ ended up becoming very personally involved in my campaign…and us both being emotional rollercoasters we even had to be separated for a brief time to ensure our sanity was kept in tact. She is one of the warmest passionate loving people I have ever met…and damn tooting she is a fucking ace publicist. We caught up to have a little chitty chat, about everything from Oprah to the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

Um worst job I ever had was definitely working at this call centre... On the first day my boss told me that I had to change my name to "Sarah" for the phones, because my real name sounds too foreign and they don't want people to think I was calling from India... But then she actually just started calling me Sarah at work...

I accidentally fell into publicity. I was interning my way through the music biz doing a bunch of different things as well as managing a band and wasn't really sure what direction I wanted to move in. Around that time I started a management internship at Shake Appeal and started doing a bit of publicity work here and there and kind of fell into it.

Sick one, you seem to have found your calling. I know for a fact that you were a make up artist...p.s my sisters thank you for the tips! What's one make up trick you couldn't live without?

Wiggle your brush when you put on your mascara cause it fans and separates the lashes. I couldn't live without mascara. You can have a full face of make up on but without mascara the look doesn't feel complete yet you can wear mascara on it's own and it looks like you're wearing a full face of make up.

That makes so much sense…Wiggle wiggle wiggle…now I’m going to make a slightly abrupt conversation shift, if that’s okay…Do you mind if I ask you a bit about your bipolarity?

Go for it!

As you know, I have recently been diagnosed...and at first naturally I was devastated...it felt like life imprisonment. But after a lot of research and guidance (including from yourself) I feel much more at peace with it...could you run me through what went through your mind when you were diagnosed?

Shock at first. When i first went to my GP to seek help for my depression, he said he wanted to get me tested for bipolar just in case as the treatment plans are very different. So keeping that in mind, i walked into the Black Dog Institute thinking getting tested for bipolar was just a precaution. I walked out with Bipolar II, ADD and mild OCD... So as you can imagine the shock of it all was pretty overwhelming and I just sat in my car and cried. The full on ugly cry where you can't tell if a person is sad or if Oprah just gave them a car. I actually didn't have a proper understanding of bipolar and to be honest had a stigma towards it fuelled by the dramatic stereotypes you see in the movies. But the more research i did on it, the more relief I felt because I finally had the answer to the question that had plagued me for most of my life - Why are things that are so easy for everyone else so hard for me? After that point I really embraced my bipolar and having something in common with Stephen Fry is pretty fucking cool too 

I actually went through the same emotions....life sentence flashed through my mind...I actually messaged you the evening I was diagnosed, had stopped taking my anti depressants in protest and I was on my own in a friends apartment drunk and sobbing, feeling incredibly frightened...and you managed to pull me back to reality....so thank you for that...from the bottom of my heart. Stephen Frys documentary did wonders for me also I must say.

You should…you got star quality sweet cheeks Can you give me one simple step forward that everyone can take to eliminating the stigma surrounding mental illness?

I think the most important thing anyone can do to help eliminate the stigma of mental illness is talking about it. I'm very open about my bipolar. Maybe a little too open haha, but I had to learn more about it because I had it and realised that it isn't what I thought it was at all! Educating people about mental illness is the first step in eliminating stigma for sure.

I completely agree, I think something I have to stop myself thinking is "people will think I'm looking for sympathy"...

Because it's just a part of who I am, and it's okay to talk about it.

I completely get the self consciousness that comes from that fear of talking about your mental illness being translated as attention seeking behaviour, because I felt the same way for a long time. But I realised that that was my own stigma towards it. In fact a got to a point where I was reflecting all of my insecurities and stigma's on to everyone around me and drove myself paranoid. But once I let go of my own stigma's it became so much easier to open about it.

Psychology or philosophy?

Hmmm my head says psychology and my heart says philosophy. I always tend to go with my heart so... PHILOSOPHY IS THE WINNER

Well… ONLY if you insist (I LOVE TELLING THIS STORY)

It all begins when I was a little girl watching Oprah on my mumma's lap. In a lot of ways, Oprah raised me just as much as my mum. Fast forward 20 years and 20 seasons of Oprah, and wifey and I (equally Oprah mental) went to Chicago to try and see her but alas no luck. But one thing Oprah preaches is the power of positive thinking, so we stayed positive... 2 years later, Oprah announces that she's coming to Australia! I stayed positive that I would get tickets to her show, and even though I didn't I continued to stay positive. After 1 failed attempt at trying to stalk her down at Bondi beach I was starting to lose hope BUT then when I was at a U2 concert I saw her best friend, Gayle in the crowd and KNEW that Oprah had to be there AND SHE WAS, I stood a metre away from her as she walked into the stadium with U2. I genuinely thought that was THE BEST I was going to get but the next day was the taping of her show and even though I didn't have tickets I needed to be around that energy so took a day off work and somehow ended up with a standby ticket where I got to watch the taping of the show from the sidelines AND stood right next to Oprah again.... I actually thought it wouldn't get better than that... BUT IT DID the next night, I was out with wifey and we get a call from one of our friends who worked for Guy Sebastian at the time that if we could get to this club in 10 minutes she'd could let us in because Oprah was there... We get there and give the security guards the fake names she gave us to use at the door but the security guard was suspicious and wanted to see our IDs... Just as we were about to give up, our friend marches up to the door and yells at us to "get to work" in all the confusion the security guards gave us back our ID's and we walk into a PRIVATE PARTY FOR OPRAH. I see her straight away and literally my brain was like DKJHGKLANSDJGNJASDHGLKSJDGL;ASDGJLASKDNVASLDNV but I waited…for the perfect moment to approach her. I never actually thought I would get to MEET her so was internally freaking out about what I would say to her but it came out so naturally... I just said thank you. We spoke a bit about a book from her book club and she said "YES GIRL" and we did Oprah hands and then we hugged and took a photo. And she was really drunk so at one point we were dancing next to each other and she held my hand to her heart cause I told her I check my "Oprah Quotes App" daily for inspiration. When we left she thanked us for coming and hugged us goodbye... We actually realised after we left that 2 years before when we were in Chicago, our friend who let us in the party, had met up with us at Oprah's studios and took a photo of me and wife hugging the 'Harpo' sign and I remember saying "we're going to hold the real Oprah one day"... It all felt very much like fate. Even though it happened 4 years ago, It still blows my mind everyday that I MET OPRAH.

Such positive…much inspire…I can't even begin to comprehend that story. The middle age woman inside of me is dying with envy…How many woods would a sney chuck chuck if a sney chuck could chuck wood?

I was having a casual whisky in a casual nightclub on a casual evening. I picked up this collapsible table/bench thing and was waving it around, I then put it down, sat on it and it collapsed under me, clamping my right leg in it. I was having such a wonderful time with my old friend Jamesons that I failed to realise how much damage I had done. I still have a massive dent in my leg to this day.

Picture this. You’re collaborating with someone you love and you’re trying to write the perfect line, melody, lyric, whatever. You’re struggling and struggling and it’s just not happening. You stop, defeated and tired - not wanting to settle for something mediocre. Conversation strays somewhere else, you might go get yourself a drink or something. You might be talking about the local football team (probably not) and out of nowhere - all of a sudden - the perfect line, melody, lyric reveals itself to you both. Then without saying a word, you look at each other and you know you’ve found it.

That’s happiness. Oh and burgers. Burgers make me happy.
