"  that's  because  they  don't  want  any  one  tribute  to  have  an  advantage.  sneak  down  here  to  train  for  a  night  and  you  might  just  come  out  a  victor,  apparently.  "  annabeth  says  it  simply,  shrugging  as  she  picks  up  one  of  the  flimsy  training  daggers  they  had  for  tributes  to  use.  she  doesn't  like  them  –  they're  weighted  all  wrong,  you  couldn't  learn  proper  technique  on  these  if  you  tried.

"  i  don't  really  think  it  makes  sense.  i've  trained  every  single  day  since  i  was  eight,  if  i  didn't  have  a  leg  up  on  anyone  else  by  now  i  don't  think  one  night  would  change  it.  "  treacherous  words  she  doesn't  register  as  so  –  it's  the  truth,  after  all.  isn't  that  what  they  should  be  striving  for?  that's  what  they  teach  her.  when  annabeth  finally  looks  back  up  to  him  she's  grateful  he  isn't  looking  back  – he  can't  see  the  barest  ghost  of  a  smile  on  her  lips  when  he  promises  not  to  tell.
