i cant even call it like nostalgia bc i didnt grow up w web 1.0 or anything like that but old web and old tech makes my heart flutter idk
i call it longing
don't think i ever shared my neocities here
can’t use the internet without adblock because it’s so crowded that it’s unusable can’t read important breaking news without a subscription can’t get a streaming service without them eventually adding commercials can’t watch youtube videos without 30 ads can’t search up things on google without seeing a shit ton of sponsored results can’t answer unknown numbers because everything is a scam call can’t use essential app features without a 30 dollar subscription per month can’t watch a music video without product placement. is anyone else tired
me realizing gen z has probably not experienced an internet outside of this
there were dedicated forums and geocities and myspace profiles and endless mmorpgs that also had custom profiles and sites where you could make your own social network and glitter graphics and livejournal and chatzy and imvu and wizard 101 and toontown and vside and onverse and weeworld and free realms and the pirates of the caribbean game and club penguin and google was actually a search engine
So TAKE IT BACK.
First off, get Firefox, Chrome is a joke. Get uBlock origin. BOOM. Youtube ads are gone. You want Google to be a search engine again, or at least get rid of AI?
BOOM
A quick way to get an AI-free search without any extra work.
Want to make your own websites? BOOM.
Create and surf awesome websites for free.
W3Schools offers free online tutorials, references and exercises in all the major languages of the web. Covering popular subjects like HTML,
MAKE YOUR OWN WEBSITE! EVERYTHING'S RIGHT THERE!
Use old versions of Windows with features deliberately disabled to make them usable instead of Windows 11! Use fucking LINUX! You want to make your own social network? Start a freakin' Mastodon or Lemmy server!
YOU WANT MMOS? THERE ARE STILL ENDLESS OPTIONS OUT THERE! There are hundreds of WoW private servers that are free, City of Heroes still has at least one major one (Homecoming), and dozens of weird other options! Runescape is still around! Freaking FURCADIA is still around!
ALMOST NOTHING WENT AWAY, WE JUST GOT PRESSURED INTO NOT USING IT!
SO. START. USING. IT. AGAIN.

unironically carrd is actually a really good introduction to HTMLCSS. it teaches you about container divs, anchors, padding, margin, etc. i had a much easier time learning at the beginning because of my experience with carrd.
if you know how to make carrds, you really should look into learning HTMLCSS. its really not that hard and you already have a lot of the basic construction knowledge, plus youll have learned an actually impressive skill that you can show off. you can do so much more with it than you can with carrd, and you can use sites like neocities or nekoweb, both are completely free and have cool communities.
theres a million posts out there with lists of links to places to start learning HTML, w3schools is probably the most popular but you can literally just look up “html/css beginners guide” and take your pick. theres a whole world of creative opportunity out there and you’re limiting yourself by sticking to carrd, join the neocities army.
PC works again i have so much shit to dooooooooo :,)

- remodel whole dogmotif site
- add new cshring members
- scrapbook page for both may and june because i missed may oops

[ID: A simple drawing of a stickman with a flat mouth and tiny, stressed eyes putting their arms onto a surface in front of them and leaning over it. Text placed behind the figure, occasionally being cut off by going behind their head, reads “I need to code I need to make my own website I need to animate I need to learn Blender I need to draw I need to paint I need to learn another language I need … utube channel I need to start … ed to make a game I need to make … ke a show I need to make a movie”
An arrow pointing at the figures head is captioned “Not doing any of this” / End ID]

Okay who here is good at html and wants to help me with my code? *cries in trying to center an iframe*
SO, the navigation bar takes up 20% of the screen. I would like to have the iframe take up 95% of the remaining screen (so really its 75% of the screen), but I also need it to be centered in the remaining area, not under the nav bar. Please help and also ignore the fact that I'm using wikipedia as a place holder while I figure this out
ok i dont know what an iframe is, so maybe ive misinterpreted/it doesnt work for those, but can you put it in a div with class="left", then in the css do:
.left {
float: right;
z-index: 2 [or whatever fits your code];
}
? That's what I do with my side boxes at least.
I tried and it unfortunately doesn't change anything. An iframe essentially lets you embed pages within pages.
My goal is to have the navigation bar not actually send you to a different page, but instead change the content of the iframe. That way if I ever make big changes to the whole site, I dont have to edit 500 different pages.
I'm fairly new myself and can't access my laptop to check right now, but would wrapping the iframe in a div then turning that div into a flexbox container and using align-content and/or justify-content work?
AHHHHH I GOT IT
Thank you so much @nanoruby and @snailcheeserulz!!
this is what I ended up doing with the code incase anyone is wondering. Now I gotta see if I have to mess with it a bit more, or if it shows up okay on other monitors too. :D
another good way to do this that will probably work better for you down the road would be to give the div that contains the iframe an ID something like “main-content” or “right”, and have that take up 80% width of the page to fit with your 20% sidebar, then have the iframe take up 100% width. that way you can reuse the container for other things and have them also fit neatly.
technically id recommend looking into flexbox to make the site more adaptive and accessible, but its not necessary especially not for beginners :)
