i thought for sure we’d be goners!

“…Interesting…how? You don’t seem like the guy that would play Magic the Gathering or any kind of game that I like to play. Do you even–do you even play any games???” Actually, now that she thought about it…this guy did look a bit. Familiar. She would remember someone that fucking tall but her brain…memory problems and all that. 

(Hey Monogama can you please send in a psychiatrist or something??? Or give her the chance to get 5 or 7 boxes of Commander Legends (both draft and collectors boxes thanks).)

Seeing the guy being…enthusiastic over the prospect of her dying was off putting. Very. Fucking. Off putting. Why…? Just…why?

“…and help me? Look, you seem familiar to me but not enough for you to help me to die–who the hell are you anyway?”

“you’re right, i don’t have the faintest idea what magic the gathering is!” he concurs with a nod. “however, i do play games.” with those words he holds up both hands as if mimicking playing on a playstation controller. “i’m just not very good at them,” he admits rather sheepishly.

“i mean i’ve also played russian roulette once, but that’s a story for another time!”

Jinyoung knows that he shouldn’t be wasting energy worrying about the content tucked away in the usb stick beside his bed. Why would anyone put load the thing with spyware? Logic does little to soothe the fears in his mind as he watches Avast antivirus scan every file on his tablet. The sound of something hitting the floor pulls his attention away from the screen to the boy addressing him. 

The economist has always been attracted to fellow eccentrics like Yugyeom. Like the other boy Jinyoung struggles with his finding his place in society. In theory his title should make him useful in the business world. After all, who wouldn’t want to get advice from an expert economist. Unfortunately the business elite were allergic to his shy personality and awkward words. Jinyoung was told that he lacks professionalism and assertiveness–whatever that means. 

His fellow eccentrics’ words are concerning. Did he actually want to die? “Yugyeom, umm, your life is important. You have so much to give society.” He slides the monopad into his pocket, concern showing in his eyes. The stress of being trapped in this place must be getting to his friend because no one could possibly want to die in a killing game. “I appreciate your sense of optimism, but  please don’t put yourself down. You’re valuable.”

“I don’t think I could kill you. I could never kill someone I consider a potential friend. Umm, I don’t think I could kill anyone.” Jinyoung rubs the side of his neck as he studies the other boy’s expression. Is Yugyeom serious? This has to be some sort of joke. “Do you really think one of us is capable of  killing someone? I really want to believe that everyone will continue living peacefully, but the logical part of me doubts that will happen. Eventually someone will probably fall for that bear’s bribes.”      

the other’s words are by no means surprising -- after all jinyoung is a good guy who sees the best in others, and yugyeom really admires him for that. it’s not unnatural that a guy like that can keep his calm and spout words that do sound very pretty and very logical even when faced with adversity. yugyeom himself is not capable of such. he simply speaks his mind as it comes to him, unaware of what emotions he might stir up in another person.

which is also why he has no reservations whatsoever in answering the older’s question. “yes. i do think so,” he concurs; probably not what the other wants to hear, but he genuinely feels that way. after all, had he thought more highly of himself, perhaps he might even be inclined to do the deed. be the first to make the move. now that sounds interesting. but if he does that he would put himself on the same level of value as those around him, and that is a terrible sin in his eyes.

“i think... the question we should be asking instead is who will be the first? to die and to kill that is. aren’t you even a bit curious about it?” he tosses a basketball against the wall to let go of it as he approaches jinyoung and crouches down before him. “people like to pretend they’re brave, but some are already unraveling don’t you think? like moon noona on growler. it won’t surprise me if someone takes advantage of that soon when she’s being so vocal about it. as for people i can see being a murderer... well i don’t know many of the seniors that well, but probably chinmae hyung. hyojin hyung too. and...”

When the video turns on, the first thing Yugyeom will see is a young girl. He will easily be able to recognise her as one of the kids from his orphanage although she has grown a lot in the years he hasn’t seen her.

“Gyeomie oppa!” she calls out cheerfully and waves at the camera. “How have you been? Everyone here misses you!” A voice from a boy a bit younger than the girl cuts in. “No we don’t!” he laughs as he takes over the camera. “Are you still as weird as you used to be?” Then another kid joins in, followed by another, an adult he knows as his old caretaker.

“So many people in your life,” a new voice cuts in, but this one belongs to Monogoma rather than any of his old orphanage family. A strange laughter fills the air as the video cuts off and show’s the bear’s face instead. “But you don’t actually care about any of them, do you? None of them are people you’d actually kill for. In a sense I suppose you’re really admirable in your conviction! Upupupu! For the ultimate lucky student to have no one that is truly important to him… that’s the kind of unlucky irony I like to see!”

he can’t say he’s not curious. he knows in his heart that no matter what the bear will show him he is not going to be swayed, but yugyeom can’t help but wonder what their so called headmaster can possibly think will serve as a motive to him. thus he turns on the video pretty much immediately, little hesitation present in his movement.

he sees the faces, familiar faces he can still put a name to -- arin, jaehyun, that one half korean kid thomas -- and they all seem happy, carefree as ever as though nothing has happened, and seeing them, yugyeom feels... nothing really. he smiles alongside their happy expressions, but if this is supposed to instill some kind of longing in him, longing for the outside, it doesn’t.

but then the bear gets to the point, the painful truth. for no matter how much he might try to claim that he too has important people, he just doesn’t. maybe it’s because he has lost that trust in humanity by now, instead decided to place it fully in the superhumans known as ultimates. 

there is only so much one can do when the majority of the school is closed off not to mention the outside world, and yugyeom is rather bored. seated in the cafeteria poking at his meal consisting of cup noodles with his chopsticks, he wonders if anyone may come to relieve his boredom, and almost as if on cue the door opens and an older guy comes in. catching eye contact with the other, he puts his chin in his hand and smiles ever so slightly.

“you’re chinmae hyung aren’t you?” he coos and points at the other with his chopsticks, opening and closing them around air a couple times yugyeom’s actions don’t exactly seem to bear a point, but he just can’t help himself. “aren’t you dating that hacker hyung? that whatshisface guy?” is he aiming for anything in asking? not really. he is simply voicing the first thoughts that come to mind.

“…I mean. I wouldn’t…give a shit if I do?” Moon raised an eyebrow as she turned and–what the fuck this guy is tall. Oh right. Her Growler. 

….Normally she would delete it but at this point, after the shit earlier she doesn’t care anymore. She’s tired, she wants to crawl into bed–yeah whatever. This guy though…asking? About her dying? Isn’t that a bit suspicious?

“Yeah that’s me but why do you ask? Are you gonna kill me or something? At least let me have dinner and a gaming session before you do.”

“me? kill you?” he asks, first baffled, but not too soon after he bursts out laughing. “i see! i kinda did make it sound that way, didn’t i? i wouldn’t do that though!” he assures her, although he’s not entirely sure whether it’s an assurance at this rate.

“if i killed you i really would be the scum of society. the worst kind of trash there is. no, i wouldn’t want to let trash like me do the honours of killing someone in here. imagine if i actually got away with it! that’d be terrible!” somehow yugyeom’s spirit seems way too eager for the words that leave his mouth, but he can’t help it. it’s just the kind of person he is.

“hyung. hyung. hey hyung,” he calls out to the other, sitting close by. yugyeom himself is bouncing basketballs off the ring in the gymnasium (he’ll get it in if he tries hard enough, or so he claims) while jinyoung seems terribly occupied with his monopad. eyes only glancing sideways for a moment to make sure he got the older’s attention, yugyeom continues speaking as if his words are an absentminded thought that just occured to him. maybe they are.

“you know, maybe this whole thing isn’t actually that bad.” the first thing he says is a dangerous thing to claim in this place, but he can’t help but feel that way. “after all, as far as i’m concerned as long as i’m involved it’s gotta be a lucky thing.” he seems strangely confident in this one particular area, and for good reason. “that’s why i’ve been wondering if this game isn’t something to be excited about! i mean everything considered, i’ll probably never be a valuable piece of society. not like the rest of you guys. so i can’t help but wonder if i can finally be useful to someone. if this isn’t some form of... yes, paradise might be the right word!”

“ah,” yugyeom mouths as he spots a figure walking out from the cafeteria a bit further ahead. he’s not entirely certain in his words, considering how new everything is, but he’ll daresay he got the right person either way. long legs skip ahead and quickly catches up to the smaller girl, phone held in hand and screen showing the tweet she (probably) just made not to long ago. or it wasn’t a tweet was it? what was it the bear called them again? he can’t remember. either way.

at a first glance i would say this doesn’t really seem lucky at all

but then i realised that even if i wasn’t locked away at school i don’t have anything to contribute to society at all! even if i were to graduate and get back out i’d probably just become another cog in the machine or who knows, maybe i’d fail to do even that and become a shut in living off other people’s goodwill!

that’s kind of funny to think about

so maybe this is a good thing after all

maybe i can contribute to someone else’s future like this

man that sounds so exciting... to gain a purpose in such a way... to become someone so meaningful in someone’s life... i wish i could experience it over and over again

unfortunately death is usually a one in a lifetime kind of thing though!
