Day 1 of NorCal / Oregon road trip!

Had a bit of a shakedown run up/down the Marin / Sonoma coast yesterday in anticipation of a road trip next week with 2 other 997.2′s, a Cayman and a F-TYPE S.

Here is the day 1 route.

This is Fred Cziska piloting a 1972 Shadow Mk lll Can-Am race car at the David Love Memorial 2015 classic car races at Sonoma Raceway.

In the original Can-Am series, there were only four factories that won championships: Lola, McLaren, Porsche and Shadow. Shadow, far less known than the other three, won the last original Can-Am championship in 1974. The Shadow was the leading American car of the series scoring more points then the legendary Chaparrals, and the only American design to win the championship.

I believe that this is a BMW 3.5 liter CSL (vintage unknown) that was raced by Thor Johnson at the David Love Memorial 2015 classic car races at Sonoma Raceway.

The last time that I piloted a Porsche on roads surrounding Mt. Shasta (NE California), I discovered Medicine Lake Rd., a 1.5 lane road that allowed access into the Medicine Lake area and the Mt. Shasta volcanic blast zone.

My 1980 911SC Targa was in it’s purest element, while I was exploring places very few people travel. Rolling countryside, hairpin turns, deeply forested areas and pumice flats, with a faint smell of burning oil from the air-cooled flat-six.

I must be thinking about this area because another road trip is planned to that very special area of CA…

You would think that piloting a 2010 Porsche Carerra 4S on Skyline to Scotts Valley would be, in and of itself, very special -- especially if a number of Porsche GT3 variants are front and rear of my position.

But on October 11, 2014, it wasn’t about the journey, it was all about the destination: Canepa.

Prodigious horsepower. Shiny curvaceous metal. Mechanical art. Soul shaking industrial-strength aural delights.

For those of you that have attended Canepa Cars & Coffee, which occurs on the 2nd Saturday of the month from April through October, you know how difficult it is to focus when wandering around the workshop and museum, let alone the parking lot.

To say the least, I look forward to returning, and trying to focus a bit better...

The business end of a couple of Shadow Racing’s finest CAN AM vehicles.

This is Leland Osborn’s 1963 Genie Mark 5, which recently participated in the David Love Memorial Races at Sonoma Raceway. I was so enthralled by the reflected light in the gorgeous paint that I forgot to take a picture of the complete race car, however for me, when these vehicles are in the paddock, they are absolute works of art.

This is a 1956 Lotus Eleven which recently participated in the David Love Memorial at Sonoma Raceway.

The 19" Carrera S II wheels, painted in Basalt Black, which were optioned on my 2010 Porsche Carerra 4S, are not just highly functional, they truly are works of art.
