It wasn’t uncommon, hearing things in the dark of the Shroud. The wind routinely tore through trees and brush, all around the darkened lavish estate, the Lord’s monument to all his sins. In any direction from the foreboding exterior were any number of watchers, brought on in both paranoia and of necessity, and none got close. Certain not close enough to force audience with the eponymous Lord of House Verdun.

However…

Corbin “Araris Vairoy” Verdun looked up from his desk, the candlelight making shadows dance across the walls of his study. The words were clear, concise, pointed. Yet there was no one to speak them. A hand raised, willing the shadows playing along the walls to cease their dancing. Darkness, it seemed, was accustomed to his will. Seeing nothing unusual, he returned to his journaling, but spoke a reply all the same.

“I have heard of you. The ones whispering in the dark. I have even seen one of your converts in the flesh. I do believe it is high time we spoke…”

He set down a quill and leaned back, eyes sharp and seeking even the most subtle of changes to his environment.
