Outside  the  company’s  reach,  in  motels  sealed  with  tape  and  prayer,  there  are  those  who  remember  being  two.  Ex-technicians.  Failed  reversals.  Survivors  with  minds  split  open  and  stitched  back  wrong.  Some  wake  screaming.  Others  never  wake  again.  And  some  walk  the  earth  with  too  many  memories  behind  their  eyes,  speaking  like  static  and  touching  things  as  though  they  hurt.  Still,  they  persist.  Still,  they  gather.  Because  something  in  them  aches  to  be  whole  again.  Because  forgetting,  they  say,  was  never  consent. And  among  the  whispered  fragments—on  slips  of  paper,  scratched  beneath  desks,  hummed  in  tones  no  one  was  taught—there  is  one  phrase  passed  between  Innies  like  a  secret  map  with  no  key: “ Meet  me  at  the  equator. ” No  one  knows  what  it  means.  Not  yet.  Perhaps  it  is  a  place.  Perhaps  a  time.  Or  perhaps  it  is  where  the  halves  will  finally  meet—where  shadow  touches  sun,  and  the  division  must  answer  for  what  it  severed.

1. At  the  time  of  your  Procedure,  you  were  given  the  opportunity  to  decline.  And  yet,  you  proceeded.  Why  did  you  choose  Dissension?

Their heart is racing, the room feels stifling, the walls closing in on them. How long has it been? How long will it be? There's a camera, a kind-seeming person in front of them. They crave tea – no, stronger, coffee. Espresso. Anything to ward off the nightmares.  Right, a questionnaire. Please answer with full clarity and personal accountability. Ambiguity may result in further observation. It's all so... medical. Of course it's medical, it's a medical procedure. Perhaps being kept here would be for the best.  An ocean away, and they still feel like she is coming, around every corner she lurks, in every shadow, just behind them with every step they take.  "Eight hours of peace every day is more than most can ask for. I'm grateful for it."  Their voice, the accent dripping wealth, privilege, respect, might not belong in a place like this, a position like theirs. Despite the displacement, their tone is calm, even, steady – one might not even realize their elevated heart rate, the effort it takes to keep their foot from bouncing where it rests on their knee. Their posture is perfect, well-practiced in mirrors for so long it's muscle memory at this point.  A smile flashes across their face, gone as quickly as it appeared. One might've thought it a trick of the mind, had it not been recorded on tape for preservation.

2.  At  the  time  of  your  arrival,  what  were  you  running  from,  or  toward?

Do they ask this question of everyone? Marlowe's head tilts to the side slightly, eyes observing the questioner, as if trying to pick them apart with tweezers, cautiously, as if what they find inside will be life-altering in an unexpected way.  Honesty is the best policy, as their mother used to say, and there's no point in avoiding the question; they quite like the peace that comes with this job, which means they don't want to lose it. Not when things are just starting to seem stable again. Their heart rate spikes again at the thought of losing what little peace they've built. Best to answer. Their gaze returns to the camera's lens. "From a past that I wasn't meant for, from people who thought they knew me but never truly did. Toward... well, hopefully, some ataraxia."  Is that enough of an answer? Full clarity and personal responsibility. "I have a Master's Degree in English Literature," they continue. A laugh is scoffed, they roll their eyes, but continue, "I was going to be a professor. But that was never enough for my mother. She had a checklist I wasn't willing to follow. She'd be repulsed if she looked at me now, but not because of the," a wave of their hand, gesturing towards the environment that surrounds them, the company of it all. "I've left it behind, an entire ocean separating me from that." 

3.  Do  you  believe  you  chose  this  life,  or  were  chosen  for  it?

"It's perhaps the second thing in life I've chosen for myself." Finally, an easy question to answer. Their heart rate slows to a resting pace once again, the relief of something that's theirs sinking into their bones. Their posture eases - spine still straight, but leg less stiff as ankle rests on knee, one hand moving to rest on their calf, the other propped gently on the chair's armrest.  "A beautiful thing, choosing life for oneself. Not everyone who has it realizes that little gift the world has given them."  It was a simple question, option A or option B. They think they've answered it to the fullest extent possible. They maintain eye contact with the camera, self-assured, confident that their interviewer will move forward with the next question. 

4.  When  you  envision  the  person  you  used  to  be,  what  part  of  them  still  lingers  in  the  current  design?

The person they used to be... "I never tried to discard myself entirely," they answer with honesty, albeit quietly.  Their mother would say otherwise. What a beautiful woman you are, why are you trying to change that? Have I wronged you? Where did I wrong you? Margaret, come back here, listen to me, do not walk away from me, you will regret this– Marlowe blinks the past away, their foot bouncing once, twice, where their ankle rests on their knee. Their grip on their calf tightens, eases; they spread their fingers just to feel the muscles tightening, then settle into a relaxed position again.  "I'm diligent." Organized stacks of paper, annotations written in the margins of well-loved books, handed down from a father to his only child. "I still take my tea with honey, preferably local." A man's laughter as they sit in a home library, fire crackling in the hearth, old records revolving as a summer rain patters against the high windows. "I still use the nickname my father gave me." Mars, always Mars, when they changed their name upon moving they ensured they wouldn't lose that little tether to the past, to someone they didn't want to forget.  "I still listen for footsteps that I recognize. Heels on hardwood is enough to get me on guard," they admit with a little laugh. Do people who grew up normally recognize the footsteps of the people they live with? "And I'll never wear Chanel. Fragrances, attire, none of it."  "Most everything else has changed for the better."
