I wouldn't consider myself much of a reader. I never read that much in high school, or even now as an adult for that matter. But when I was in college, I had a girlfriend who always gave me books. She would write a note on the inside cover of each one telling me why I would like it, why she liked it, or even why she hated it and thought I should read it anyway. At the time, I thought nothing of it. That it was one of her many quirks, her way of showing that she cared. I read some of them, started some and never finished them, and some I never even touched. She would ask me what I thought of them, and no matter what, whether I said I liked it or I couldn't get into it, she always seemed slightly disappointed in my answers. At the time I thought she really wanted me to deep dive into each one and find the deeper meaning. And at times I tried that, but she still seemed unsatisfied. When we broke up she told me to keep all the books, she had already read all of them and didn't have any use for them. For a while they all sat on my shelves collecting dust. Nonetheless, the more time went by, the more I missed her. After begging and pleading for her to take me back, she refused. So I started reading all her books. Trying to figure out what I missed. What deeper message she could see that i couldn't. I read and reread and annotated, and with every book that I couldn't figure out, I missed her more and more. I felt like when I had her I didn't appreciate her fully. That I never took the time to understand her completely. Each book was a piece of her that I was just now discovering. It's been a few years since we've broken up and she's moved on to someone new. I hate to admit I haven't, but I am no longer heartbroken. I still wouldn't consider myself much of a reader, although I might never stop rereading her books. When someone new for me comes along, I'll be sure to read every single one of theirs.
