presso O2 Shepherds Bush Empire
ssooooo excited to see them in Nov.
I’m tired of the rhetoric that online communities focusing on chronic illness and disability are inherently toxic and impede one’s ability to find happiness. Without the very tight-knit community that I was able to find online, I’d be lost. Rather than struggling through years of daily pain and increasing limitations alone, I’ve found a group of people with not just similar experiences, but knowledge that they’ve shared with me to help overcome many of the obstacles I wouldn’t have been able to tackle without them.
This isn’t to say that there aren’t communities for chronic illness online that are toxic: just like with everything else, those negative communities do exist, and it’s unfortunate that they perpetuate negative cycles rather than focusing on support. But without the camaraderie of the many people within the community I found, I’d never realize that there are other people that feel the same way that I do, never would have had people to turn to for tips and tricks on managing an illness that will continue to grow worse throughout the rest of my life.
I’ve been a part of this online community for a year and a half, and I’ve seen it grow from a small chat room into a thriving online hub for sharing knowledge, progress, frustrations, and life achievements. Rather than isolating myself and feeling like a failure for struggling to make a meal because of my pain, I have access to a hundred people that feel the same right in my pocket. I’m never alone in my fight, and as they are there for me when I need them, I’m there for them when they’re struggling as well.
Chronic illness communities are a place for healing, and they cross one of the biggest boundaries faced by people with chronic illnesses; loneliness. Painting these communities with the label of toxic just continues to isolate people that are already struggling.
I totally agree. I’ve met some of my best friends via online chronic illness communities and have not experienced the negatives others seem to be focusing on lately. It is very easy to stay out of the drama by avoiding toxic aspects of the community (i.e. Reddit, etc.).
Manchester libraries, so dreamy @warmhealer
researchers found that when zebra finches form same-sex pairings, they are just as devoted to their partners as they would be in an opposite-sex pairing. zebra finches are monogamous, and same-sex pairs displayed the same nesting, preening, and courtship behaviors as opposite-sex pairs. although same sex pairs cannot reproduce, there are survival advantages to having a mate, regardless of sex. when researchers added in ‘extra’ females to the groups of finches, the finches still chose to stay with their same-sex partners.

Find me in the prairie grass, daisies blooming around my toes. Find me finding myself in the truest light. I am the Neil Armstrong of my own soul, discovering the gravity– the weight– of my own hands. Yes, I am bones and muscle and skin, but oh, what a mistake to think these are only limits.

I’ve been trying to do short 10 minute barre workouts and wow that’s tough. It is baffling how out of shape I am, yet I know building and maintaining muscle is my only saving grace to keep my EDS joints in place.
If you’ll have me.
