I imagine Ominis grew up very sheltered. But not in a good way, if there even is such a thing. Likely in a "your disability is an inconvenience to deal with, so just stay put" way. The gloomy gardens in Gaunt's home's immediate surrounding is where he would be allowed to wander off to and it's where he would occasionally find a conversation partner.
