The afternoon air was alive with the sounds of spring and the light of the glistening sunbeams. The overhead pine bristles brushed against each other was wind pushed through the air. Mossy overhangs from logs and smoothed rocks bordered the babbling trail-side brook.
It was the perfect weather for a hike- with the previous week’s worth of rain keeping the temperature down but the sun of this week keeping the trail mud-free. Even managing to do so despite how heavy the three sets of hooves were compared to the four sets of hooves and one set of shoes that came up the same trail earlier.
“Thanks again for carrying me back down,” Tyler said, one hand reaching down to rub at the soreness permeating through her ankle and calf. Hunter, the bay shire horse carrying her beamed as he responded, “No worries!”
He waved away what remained of the concern from her voice, “You know I’m always happy to help.” Indeed, Hunter was always seen with some sort of bag adorning his joining-waist, usually filled with trinkets or treats and usually even markers or small paper notebooks. Even now, he reached into his waist-bag to dig out the offerings of snacks or maybe some bug spray. Unsatisfied with his findings however, Hunter then wrapped an arm around back to the bag over his shoulders- the one Tyler had been holding onto to steady herself without a good saddle.
Pulling out a water bottle, he offered it to Tyler, “Need anything else? Any water?”
Tyler graciously declined, despite the beads of sweat forming along her red cheeks and hairline and the stain gathering around her collar. She knew her body’s limits and had a terrible habit of not accepting help until it was absolutely unavoidable. Hunter knew this, but still couldn’t hide the displeasure as he pulled his lips into a thin line and moved to put the bottle back in his bag.
A deeper voice behind them called out to pause his motion, “I’ll take it.” Lane, an icelandic horse breed with a thick blue-ish coat, called out from the rear of their little caravan.
Hunter tossed the bottle back to him, and he caught it with ease, grumbling something about ‘not being home already’. Tyler, apparently having caught whatever snide comment he made, burst out laughing.
She motioned ahead of them as she called back, “You’re almost as bad as Cross!”
In the lead were the two smallest of the group. Cricket was taller- being at least a full-sized centaur, and only being shorter thanks to his appaloosa-mule blood stunting his growth. In comparison, the little nubian goat-centaur of Cross was wrapped up in a saddle bag across his hide. Cross was destined to be the smallest no matter what, even when they grow out of their young age.
At least their age and size gave them the ability to sucker Cricket into carrying them down the rest of the trail as they played with their shiny plastic toys and figurines from their comfortable sling.
“Cricket!” Lane called for his attention. After a begrudging ear-flick of acknowledgment, Lane continued, “Are you gonna carry me, too?”
“Hell no,” Came the immediate balk.
“Aww man, come on dude.”
As the pathway widened up to allow, Lane trotted up past Hunter and met near Cricket’s side, dramatically brushing against him and letting out an exasperated sigh. “You’re killing me, dude! My hooves are about to fall off, and then I’ll be made into glue. Do you want that? Do you want me to be glue-ified?”
“As long as you aren’t glued to me,” Cricket bit back as he bumped him away. Cross let out an amused squeal with the jostling motion. Even as Tyler let out a noise of disapproval at Lane’s joke, Hunter couldn’t help but chuckle.
Letting Cricket and Lane get a few spaces ahead, Hunter used the moment to ask Tyler something privately.
“That reminds me- when is the shipment coming in?”
Tyler took a moment to remember what he was talking about, before smiling and reaching up to pat reassurance into his shoulder, “That storm this past week delayed it, but it should be here by Thursday. Don’t worry.”
Hunter nodded, his smile softening. Up ahead, Lane was almost knocked into the river and Tyler called out a sharp noise for the two of them to cut it out. Of course, neither of them would listen as they all continued down towards Northwater Ranch.
