Week 5 (29-35) of 365 Days of Hoodoo by Stephanie Rose Bird

I do want to note before we begin that day 31 is the conclusion of chapter one: mojo bags and that we will be starting chapter two: hoodoo waters. I will make note of it again within the post.

Week 4 (22-28) of 365 Days of Hoodoo by Stephanie Bird

Day 22 - Pins and needles

They are very similar to what we learned about nails last week as far as their connection to Ogun and the type of work they are used for.

Day 23 - Ogun Praise Chant 

Encouraged to use this chant, from the town of Ketu, when doing work with items that contain Ogun's asé. *I couldn’t find an audio file of the chant used in the book, however YouTube has a great collection of chants and hymns that uplift Ogun.*

Day 24 - Curio of Note/Money

There are different types of currency that are used to pay tribute and offering to the ancestors, lwa, and orisha. Dollars, coins and cowrie shells, just to name a few, are. being used by those spirits to carry out the different tasks they have. I do want to note, to give what you can but also, trust spirit. 

Day 25 - Money Moon Bath

On this day, Ms. Bird gave a helpful ritual for charging your silver (dimes) in a moon bath. I, myself have done this moon bath and of course intention is a major part of any work, however the change could be felt immediately.

Day 26 -  Divination Jack 

This jack is like a mojo bag, however, it is used specifically for divining. Jack works like a pendulum and it is encouraged to have a long-term relationship with your jack.

Day 27 -  Hoodoo Gardening

This gardening day highlighted Adam and Eve root. Though I have not started my garden I am still purchasing my seeds so that once the season to plant arrives because my garden will be primarily outside.

Day 28 - Curio of Note/High John the Conqueror Root

For anyone that wasn’t aware (myself lol), High John spirit is said to live in Joel Chandler Harris’ Br’er Rabbit and Uncle Remus tales. However, High John is very prominent in sympathetic magic especially for survival workings. 

In summary, this week has been the most informational thus far. From having an introduction to the warrior orisha Ogun and a few items that connect with him, two important curios and there significance in hoodoo just to name a few. I would be remiss if I didn’t express my excitement not only for the remainder of this month but what is to come for the year. 

Week 3 (15-21) of 365 Days of Hoodoo by Stephanie Rose Bird

This week we were given a brief overview of the connection between metal smithing and warrior orisha Ogun, instructions on how to put together a luck drawing (especially in money matters) mojo, the correlation between our ‘hand’ or mojo bags and the ajna or third eye. Ms. Bird shared more luck drawing mojo bags, a protection mojo bag, the significance of the different types of nails and their uses in relation to mojo bags.

Welcome back! I am so excited to on this journey. This book is exactly what I was looking for when I first heard my calling. Within my own family there is little talk of our ancestors, who they were, what they did for a living and what spiritual practices they conducted aside from attending church services. From hearing my call to now, I’ve grown a deeper relationship with my ancestors. as well as, brought the story telling of mothers, fathers, distant cousins, uncles, and friends.

Week Two: Days 8-14

As I stated last week (11 Nov), we will be pausing Sacred Woman as our featured book and beginning Stephanie Rose Bird’s 365 Days of Hoodoo.

Week One: Days 1-7

• This week Ms. Bird gave us an introduction to mojo bags/flannels, the importance of where they are placed on your person and a few examples of similar bags that are used in neighboring traditions like the Native Americans and The Bamana of Western Sudan.

• The color red and it’s significance to the Yoruba people was touched on this week. For example that it “embodies motivation, action, strength, and vitality.”

• Lastly, I’d love to highlight the nature walk Ms. Bird sends us on on day five. Being someone that enjoys being in nature and meditating, this activity was especially exciting for me.
