so anyway, yeah that shit stick w you for a hot minute as you grow up. you go through school and whatnot, find out this, that and the third about yourself and slowly enough become more woke. ya family prolly showed you alex haley’s roots as a kid and we all know the story of the african ppl coming to america so.
here they are in chains, having their traditions beat outta them. their language forced outta them. their gods stripped from them. they families taken away from them and separated. gettin traded and sold like animals here and there to masters/owners of white, native and yes even black descent. but still bein forced to do work for free and women gettin raped and producing more slave children, some mixed w white and some mixed w native blood bc everybody in the americas wanted to have niggas workin for them for free and on they say so.
thats what you know bout ya ancestors. now you grown, livin in the 21st century and you know all this history so you realize that a lot of the shit you do today has nothin at all to do w your own ancestors really. you respect that your family and ancestors have christian faith and you know they believed in that to get them through some harsh ass times but it also don’t sit right w you that the only reason they still practicing this faith is bc some white man told them they have to or they’ll be burning forever when they die.
so you wanna reconnect w ya roots.
since my personal heritage is black, choctaw, creole and italian. imma share my experience. let’s start w the black Native American roots. some blacks know theyr tribe some don’t. and you start lookin into your ppls traditions and culture and try to reconnect w it. but you come to find out some native ppl hate you just as much as whites do lol. they was alright w enslaving and raping your ancestors but you not good enough to have any access to this culture that is also in your blood, the gate keepers like nah you black devil go back to your own. wtv.
and then you find out even tho the things imma list off are legit apart of your culture you’re waaay too black to be afro-latinx, afro-native, afro-jewish, afro-asian basically you just too damn black to be in anything that’s not predominantly black.
so you like, well damn … i ain’t do nothin to you personally, im just tryna live … but okay, maybe my own black ppl are a lot more welcoming.
so you look into ya black ancestry. which is slim to no chance of learning what country or tribe you came from bc when the ytes brought your ancestors here they wasn’t tryna record what nigga came from this tribe or that tribe. the europeans decided yo ass was black. so thats what the fuck they gon write down. these niggas is black. no need to document who might be mandinka or yoruba or berber - that shit ain’t important to us. they all bouta pay off their heathen and savage ways to our holy christian god anyway !! kunta kinte? whomst tf is that. nah, this niggers name is toby, stop all that niggerish talk and worshippin them devil idols of yours, your way is wrong and your descendants gonna know this too.
so now you gotta block in the road. you might be able to find out ya tribe if you do one of them expensive ass dna tests, but more than likely you just don’t have the funds for that cause you grew up in a pretty poor neighborhood w very little to no damn access to resources. but then you start incorporating traditions from Africa into your very own existence but then you find out that motherland Africans really don’t want shit to do w you either lol. you’re a watered down american. you’re looked down upon and called lazy and stupid bc your ancestors weren’t smart enough to know how to not get caught. yikes. all the media portrays of you is black americans are some wild, savage, non workin, illiterate lazy thugs that kill each other and sell drugs and hang at the corner and are ghetto ass hoodrats with no daddies in they communities.

so you just like fuck it, I guess I’ll fuck w my own then. just as ya ancestors did and had to incorporate their own traditions to the best of their memory and mix it in w western traditions. outta that comes hoodoo. comes voodoo.
