Brody’s parents tell him that they want to talk to him. He starts to wonder if he’s in trouble, but they assure him that he isn’t. They just want to talk to him about something important.
After they get a couple of sentences in, Brody has the realization that this is a sex talk. He starts to protest. After all, he isn’t even dating anyone. Nadia might not even be interested in him. His parents insist that it’s better to talk about these kinds of things before they need to than to wait.
It’s embarrassing, but they explain the basics and even go into more detail. Brody can’t believe they’re actually saying what they’re saying, but on the inside, he has to admit that he’s learning a lot.
They ask if he has any questions, but he’s too shy to ask any of them. They let him know that he can come to them any time with any questions he has, even if he has to write them down instead of saying them out loud. That sounds like a good idea to him.

Levi: Guess who I just saw making out?! Alex n’ Robin.
Wren: Oh my god, finally.
Levi: Right? And we didn’t even have to meddle.
Wren: Hopefully Robin doesn’t get mom n’ dad’s sickening love of PDA though-.. are yours as bad?
Levi: I don’t give a shit about what my parents do, okay? Don’t try and go all sneaky therapist on me.
Wren: What the fu-.. I barely said anything! You’re so fucking touchy, jesus.
Levi: Whatever.
Byrd: What’s going on, why’s everyone still awake?
Wren: Why’re you up so early?
Byrd: Dad tried to light a smoke on the hotplate thing n’ burnt his beard, it stinks in there.
Wren: Lol, should’ve pitched a tent.
Byrd: What were you talking about?
Wren: Robin n’ Alex were smoochin’ by the lake.
Byrd: Awh.. I didn’t know they liked each other that way.
Wren: Sometimes I don’t know how you manage to get dressed in the morning, bird-brain.
After Brody tells us about his crush, Paul and I have a discussion about it.
“You know it’s probably time to have a discussion about sex with him, right?” Paul asks.
“Yeah, I’m not really looking forward to that, but I think it’s necessary.”
“Are you nervous about it?”
“Yeah. I know he will feel embarrassed. And I don’t know what to say. How much information is too much? What if we don’t prepare him enough?”
“I think you’re overthinking it. We don’t have to give him a step-by-step guide. We just need to make sure he’s informed on how to be safe, and that he’s not getting information from other sources that isn’t correct.”
“That’s a good point. Between his friends and the internet, I’m sure he’s been hearing some things that aren’t right.”
“It will be awkward, but we’ll get through it. And hopefully afterward he’ll feel like he can come to us if he has any more questions.”
“That’s how it was with my parents. They were very open, and I felt comfortable coming to them with questions about sex. I want Brody to have the same experience.”
“Me, too. I think we’ve got this. We just need to push through the awkwardness and be honest and open.”
“Sounds like a plan.”

Their “usual spot” was Dawn’s Diner on Center Street.
A place they’d been coming to since they were kids.
Every day after school, they’d walk in and Dawn would hand them ice cream or hot chocolate, and they’d slide into a booth to do their homework.
An hour later, their mother would show up and give Dawn a hug and tell her she wished she’d stop filling her kids up with all that sugar. To which Dawn would reply that it was her duty to spoil her niece and nephew, thank you very much. Then, she’d flash the twins a conspiratorial wink, making them giggle as their mother led them out the door.
Barbara loved her more than anything.
And she missed her terribly.
“So?” Barbara asked to break the silence.
Mikey sat across from her, running his finger through the condensation on his water glass with his brows pulled tight and his mouth pressed in a thin line like he’s trying to keep the words from spilling out, words he was desperate to tell her only yesterday.
Finally, he looked at her, opened his mouth, and let out a rush of air along with a single word, “So…”
And, like, really?
He was really going to torture her like this? She wanted to grab him and shake him, but she shoved the impulse aside because they were in public, and instead pummeled him with questions, “What are we doing here, Mikey? What do you want to talk about? Where have you been for the last month?”
He sat up straighter then, wiped his hands on his jeans and said, “I’ll tell you. I promise. But can we talk about you first?”
“Me?”
“Yeah, how are classes? Work? Are you doing okay?”
She stared at him incredulously. Something weird had been going on with him lately. She didn’t like it. She also didn’t like the implication in his tone. “I’m fine. I am capable functioning without you.”
“I never said you weren’t. I’m just checking in. I know I haven’t been around much, and I’m sorry for that, but it doesn’t mean I don’t still care.”
She deflated a bit at that. At the softness in his eyes and the sincerity in his voice. Sometimes it was impossible to hold on to her anger around him. She nodded slightly, conceding that perhaps a conversation would be more effective than an interrogation. For now. “I’m doing good. A couple of classes have been tough, and it’s been hard to focus on studying. The house is too quiet without you there. But it’s nothing I can’t handle. Mostly, I just miss you.”
“I miss you too.” He gave her a small smile that she couldn’t help but return.
Their waitress, a bubbly woman with dark hair pulled high into a messy bun, showed up then. She set their tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches in front of them with a smile and told them to give her a holler if there’s anything else they need before disappearing into the familiar hustle and bustle of the diner.
“So,” Mikey said around a bite of his sandwich, “are you going to tell me about that guy at the library?”
Barbara stopped mid-opening a packet of saltines and looked up at him. He crooked an eyebrow at her, and she thought about playing dumb, but knew it wouldn’t get her very far. She crushed the crackers into her soup and stirred them around as she answered, “Nothing to tell really. I don’t know him. I just think he’s… interesting.”
“Interesting?”
“Yeah. I mean, he goes to Britechester, but he studies at the public library four days a week rather than the university library. He’s studying microbiology, but he’s always pouring through books about Selvadorada. The culture, geography, rare plants, myths, all kinds of stuff. He’s so focused and smart and quiet. So quiet. I’ve never heard him speak. But he stares off sometimes and I can tell his mind is just spinning with thoughts, and I want to know every one of them. I want to be the person he tells all his thoughts to.” She stopped. Her face felt like it was on fire. She hadn’t meant to say that last part out loud.
Thankfully, Mikey didn’t try to embarrass her. He just breathed a laugh through his nose and said, “That’s quite a crush.”
“Yeah, well,” she shrugged, a gesture of nonchalance that was doomed to fail given her previous statement.
“Are you going to do anything about it?”
“I don’t know.” She hesitated for a moment before deciding to continue. He was, after all, the only person she could talk to about this. “He always has this little toy car with him.”
Mikey froze, but didn’t say anything.
“He puts it on the desk while he works. Sometimes he holds it, running his thumb over the tires. But most the time, it just sits there. I think it could work.”
He sighed, “Why can’t you just talk to him like a normal person?”
“I will. I just want to get a sense of him first. If you were smart, you’d do the same thing with Katie.”
“Her name is Catherine. And I’m not going to do that. You never should have done that.”
“I’m glad I did. Mikey, if you felt what I felt, you’d understand.”
“It was just a dream! It doesn’t mean anything. This, right here,” he knocked on the table as if to make a point, “you and me, awake, this is what’s real.”
“I know that. But this being reality doesn’t make dreams meaningless. They’re a window.”
“Not the way you think. They’re memories. Distorted and jumbled. They can be interpreted a million different ways. But most of all, they’re private. We don’t belong in other people’s heads.”
She slumped. She couldn’t argue with him on that, not without sounding awful, and he knew it. But that didn’t mean she believed there wasn’t a middle ground. Because, selfishly, she did want to get a sense of Gabriel. And after spending thirty seconds in Catherine’s head, she felt it was important now more than ever. Because people manipulate, and they lie. But dreams, distorted and jumbled though they could be, were honest.
They finished their meal in silence, saying nothing until their waitress came by and they thanked her as she stacked their dishes and took them away.
“So, are you going to tell me where you’ve been or what?” Barbara finally asked because she wasn’t going to let him get away with leaving without fulfilling that promise.
Mikey nodded and leaned forward on his elbows, “Okay, but I need you to promise me that you’ll listen before you react. Set your judgments aside because I really need you to be happy for me. Or at least supportive.”
She didn’t know what to make of that. She scanned his worried expression. What could possibly… Oh no. Oh no. “Oh my god, Mikey, please tell me Catherine isn’t pregnant.”
“What? No! Is that really the first place your mind goes? We haven’t even… done… that.”
She laughed, mostly in relief, “What are you, saving yourself for marriage?” She’d meant it as a joke, but the way Mikey looked at her told her that was exactly what he was doing, and she laughed again, “Seriously? She does know you’re not a virgin, right?”
He sighed, that exasperated one she knew so well, the one she sometimes thought he reserved only for her, “Yes. She knows that. So does her father.”
She nearly choked, “I’m sorry, what?!”
“It’s not… He’s on the church council, so it’s unavoidable. Listen, that’s what I’m trying to tell you. I’ve been in Willow Creek, preparing to join the church. I told them everything… about my life so far. Prayed. Repented. It’s a whole process of shedding the life of sin and stepping into a new one. To walk in the Light of God.”
Barbara was speechless.
She knew Catherine was religious. She knew Mikey had been going to church with her on weekends in an attempt to be supportive. But this. This, she didn’t know what to do with. She’d never heard him talk like this before. They grew up in a secular household. Their parents were academics. Atheists even.
Though, it’s not like she couldn’t understand. At least a little bit. When Dawn passed away, even Barbara questioned things. Wanted to believe in something more. Some grand design or purpose. But she knew there were no concrete answers to be had, and organized religion always gave her the ick, so she settled comfortably in agnosticism.
“B? Will you say something, please?”
She opened her mouth. Closed it again. Her voice trapped between his need for support and her need to ask him if he’d lost his fucking mind. But then one thought came barreling through in a rush, “You told them everything?”
He closed his eyes, as if he couldn’t bear to look at her when he said, “Everything.”
“Traveling?”
He nodded and opened his eyes again. “But it’s okay. I promise.”
“How is that okay?”
“They’re going to help me. Make sure it never happens again.”
“What? How? Why? I… Mikey, how many times do I have to tell you? This is a gift. It’s not a curse.”
“I disagree.”
He said it so simply that she didn’t know how to respond.
He reached out and put a hand over hers, “My baptism is on Sunday. I really want you to be there. Listen to them. Just once. And I promise you’ll understand.”
The depth of sincerity in his eyes terrified her for reasons she couldn’t quite understand. She didn’t know how she was supposed to react. Of course, he was allowed to believe in whatever he wanted to believe in. But who the fuck were these people, and could they really take away his ability to Travel?
She already felt like they were growing apart, moving in two different directions, and it made her sad, angry, maybe a little jealous, but this… This was different. She felt like a part of her was being ripped away and she couldn’t take it.
She pulled away from him and shook her head, “I’m can’t. I’m sorry. I have to go.”
And she left.

A/N: For the sake of clarity - the Dawn we know and love (Atlas' twin sister), is not the same Dawn here (the one who owned the diner).
However, Our Dawn was named after Diner Dawn (she just doesn't know it).
Also, this scene is probably the most evidence we'll get of Barbara and Michael's identities (and Catherine's for that matter). It's not necessary for the story that this remains secret, so if you want to know, you can ask and I'll tell you. But if you prefer the added mystery, then I'll keep my mouth shut. Just know it won't be made clear until the epilogue.
Now that Brody has accepted that he has a crush on Nadia, it’s all he can think about. When she sits next to him in class, he wonders if it might mean something. Does she like him, too? Maybe she just wants to stay friends.
After class, Nadia starts talking about some reality TV show that she’s obsessed with. Brody is only a bit familiar with it, but he joins in with her praise. Maybe if she sees that they have things in common, she’ll start to have feelings for him.
By the time lunch arrives, Brody is feeling less confident. His emotions have been all over the place. One minute he feels scared, the next he’s confident, and then he just gets embarrassed. Is this what love is supposed to be like?
The next morning after breakfast, he decides to confide in his parents. They usually have good advice when he’s going through something. He tells them about his crush on Nadia, but he’s not sure how much help they’ll be with understanding girls. To his surprise, he finds out that both Johnny and Paul have dated girls before. Maybe they know more than he expected.
They tell him to just be himself, and to be genuine. Ask her questions about herself, and try not to focus so much on trying to get her to like him back. Just take things as they come. It all sounds good, but it might be easier said than done.

Something has been on my mind lately. At first, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do anything about it, but it kept coming up in my thoughts. I decide to talk to Paul about it. We’re in the baby’s room with Chelsea when I bring it up.
“I want to get your opinion on something,” I tell him.
“Sure, what is it?”
“Well, I’ve been thinking a lot about how I never finished college. I know I have a good job now, but I left when I was going through a rough time and I’ve always wondered what things would be like if I hadn’t.”
“I didn’t realize you thought about it that much. So, are you asking what I think?”
“Yeah. I just don’t know if it’s a good idea. I mean, we have four kids, one of whom is only a few months old.”
“Well, honey, that’s up to you. Do you think you have enough time to focus on school on top of everything else?”
“I think so. I looked into it, and Britechester has a program that’s geared towards working adults. It’s all online, so I wouldn't have to worry about getting to campus.”
“That sounds great! If you decide to go for it, I’m willing to help out however I can.”
“I know you would, but you have a full time job yourself.”
“We’ll make it work. If we have to get some extra help in the evenings, we can afford it.”
“Thanks for being so supportive.”
“Of course! I want to support you any way I can. So, what are you thinking of studying?”
“I think I want to study Media Production. I think it could help me move my way up at work to some production stuff behind the camera.”
“That sounds perfect! I think this is going to be good for you.”
“Thanks, I hope it is.”

Brody and his friends were meeting up at ThrifTea. Brody got his favorite chocolate boba.
He sat down with his friend Malik and they talked a bit about their favorite video games. Brody told him that one of his dads streams video games sometimes. Malik was impressed. It felt good to let one of his friends know a little more about his family. He still hadn’t mentioned that he was adopted, but they might have suspicions since they know he has two dads.
After they chatted a bit, they decided to head inside to talk to some of the others. They joined Nadia and Isaac’s conversation. During the conversation, Nadia told Brody that she was glad they’d become friends. Then, it happened.
Brody’s heart began racing and his cheeks got warm. He felt a fluttering in his stomach. There was no denying it now. Brody had a crush on Nadia. He was equal parts exhilarated and horrified. What if she didn't like him back? What if she did?
Just then Malik and Isaac wandered off, leaving Nadia and Brody alone on the couch. Maybe they sensed that something was brewing between the two and decided to give them space. Brody had to say something, but he was too shy to flirt outright. He decided to casually ask Nadia if she was single. She said she was, and left it at that. He still couldn’t tell if there was any interest on her part. He hoped there was.

⌨️ Thiago doesn’t have a jealous wife – in fact, it would be very beneficial if she continued her online relationship with him.
⌨️ It would also be helpful if she passed evidence of their chats along; encrypted, of course.
⌨️ Any additional information she has about him would also be useful. She can name her price.
⌨️ Lastly, she is not to discuss this with anyone - Thiago is not just someone’s husband; he’s a Grand Duke.
He absolutely did.
After she got all the details, she immediately went downstairs to talk to her husband, Jay.
“ I’m gonna tell you something, but you can’t freak out. “ She warned. Then she took a big breath and spilled it it one run on blob.
“ I just found out one of my subs is royalty and they’re trying to do some sort of coup or something and overthrow him. I don’t know - either way, they wanna pay me to give them Intel. “
Doli stared at Jay, who said nothing for a long while. Then, his eyes squinted.
“ Royalty? Like royalty, how ?” He asked.
“ A Grand Duke or something. But that’s not the point, babe. “ Doli answered , her eyes wide. “ Should I do it? If I don’t do it, are people going to beat down the door? Should we call the police? “
“ How did he even find you? How did he know that Duke guy was even a sub? “ Jay asked.
“ No idea. “ she answered. “ But… he did reach out to me through an encrypted message; you think he’s a spy or something? “
✏️ Jay knows encryptions. Jay also knows that someone with that skill set goes out of their way to avoid attention.
“ Whatever’s going on is clearly above our pay grade. I wouldn’t send any transcripts; that’s a breach of OS guidelines. You don’t wanna get caught up. “ Jay said. “ You can tell him you’d be willing to ask specific questions, but that’s it. Then tell him to never contact you again. “
Then Jay said he’s gonna call Bernardo in the morning to come take a look – clearly her computer’s compromised.
Robin: It’s not your fault.
Alex: That’s not true.
Robin: You were just a little kid.
Alex: Yeah, but I still knew what I was doing!
Robin: You didn’t make her d-…
Alex: I did!
Robin: [sighs] You can’t keep blaming yourself.
Alex: I can, and should! It’s just-.. you’ll never understand because I can’t-.. ugh!
Robin: You know you can tell me anything, right?
Alex: You wouldn’t believe me even if I did.
Robin: I’d always believe you.
Alex: Always?
Robin: Well, within reason-…
Alex: Exactly! This is well beyond reason.
Robin: I’m more used to that than you’d think.
Alex: Yeah, right.
[Alex scoffed lightly, though her voice was devoid of scorn]
[Alex launched herself to her feet and took a deep breath before she could change her mind]
Alex: I can make people do whatever I tell them to and they'll just do it, no hesitation. They don't even realize what's happened until it's already said and done-.. but it's not all ha-ha make someone dance like a chicken, y'know? It can hurt people, like my mom, and I'm terrified something like that might happen again so I really think about what I'm gonna say over and over and over but sometimes stuff just comes out, right? Like when you're angry or sad or whatever but I can't have that freedom ‘cause it’s dangerous, so I just try to think as little as possible but it’s exhausting keeping up that wall and overanalysing every little sentence before it comes out. It’s easier not to be around anyone, I guess. Like, that’s why we stayed with my uncle so much and why I was home-schooled, right? But then I met you and got a taste of what it was like to have a friend and-.. and you were different, but I don’t know why. It’s like you’re immune for some reason, and it's not like I haven't tried! Just small things as a test, nothing bad, but it feels like whatever I suggest goes right over your head and I don't understand. It’s kinda nice though, like you’re the only person I can really relax around ‘cause I won’t just blurt something out and make you walk off a cliff-.. not that I would, obviously, but…
[Alex stopped blathering abruptly, rather self-conscious now that she'd word vomited out what felt like her entire being right in front of Robin, who had sat in a strange, perplexed looking silence throughout the entire duration of her rambling soliloquy]
...
Alex: Hello?
Robin: Is that why you always say maybe in front of everything?
Alex: Well yeah, it's purposefully vague-.. is that really what you're choosing to say about all this?
Robin: Sorry, I'm just processing. I feel like things make a bit more sense now.
Alex: You know what doesn’t make sense? Your weird immunity…
Robin: Maybe I just have a super strong brain.
[Robin grinned half-heartedly, his stomach sinking as he realised he probably ought to explain his own specialty]
Alex: What?
Robin: Nothing, I just-…
Alex: There’s something different about you too, right? I’m not imagining things, am I?
Robin: Well, I can feel what other people feel, I guess.
[Robin sucked in his bottom lip and widened his eyes briefly as if that simple little answer would be enough for Alex. He’d never been much of a talker anyway and it felt doubly weird to tell someone about his “gift”, even if that someone was Alex]
Alex: You mean like an empath?
Robin: That and erh, people’s thoughts n’ stuff come through too.
Alex: Wait, wait, wait-.. you can read minds?! Holy shit, Robin.
Robin: What, c’mon-.. don’t make it sound so odd.
Alex: We are odd though! Gosh, that must suck for you though.
Robin: Sometimes.
Alex: Why’d you ask about the water thing then? You must’ve already known the answer.
Robin: No, it doesn’t really work properly on you for some reason-.. maybe ‘cause you try so hard to keep your mind blank. S’pose you must be pretty good at it.
Alex: Oh.
Robin: It’s neat though, sometimes-.. peaceful.
Alex: Sometimes? Bet you hate it at times too, Mister Nosy.
Robin: [snorts] Busted.
Alex: You realise what this means..?
Robin: What?
Alex: We can only properly relax around each other, right? Like we’re perfectly immune to each other’s bullshit-.. like super soulmates or something.
Robin: Super soulmates, huh?
Alex: I bet it’s in the dictionary somewhere…
Axel: She's providin' moral support while I do some thumbnails for tour posters.
Sorella: Not Rocky?
Axel: Rocky'll put 'em together, but up to me to brainstorm.
Sorella: Ah got it. Didn't mean to interrupt.
Axel: Nah! You're helpin' with the creative vibe!
Sorella: If you're making posters, are the tour dates all finalized?
Envy: [exasperated sigh] No. A few of the venues are giving us the runaround STILL. Saying our streaming numbers aren't good enough for them to book us. Joey is looking at a few backups. Hopefully they work out better. It's just rude!
Sorella: Seriously rude, don't they know Mystress is the next big thing?
Envy: Right!? Whatever... It'll all work out. I know it.
Axel: It will. Don't worry. Hear back from any of your auditions?
Sorella: Nope. I'm not really surprised. I didn't really fit any of the parts I tried out for. Deja hasn't heard back from any either, so we might come up with something to keep us busy for the fall. A cabaret maybe. Her day job SUCKS, oh which reminds does remind me- thanks again for convincing me to quit the pub.
Envy: [laughs] You're welcome!! And you didn't think you were good enough for sessions work!
Sorella: I don't know why I ever doubted you.
Envy: You really should know better by now! I know everything.
Dear Diary,
I suppose I can finish up this one before I buy a new one. Though, I think my therapist would tell me a fresh one is better or whatever. I don't feel like going to get one and there's pages here. I'm about to be divorced. I have two daughters that I love more than anything in the world. I was still pregnant with Juliana the last time I wrote in this. Wasn't even married yet. Had no idea what the next few years had in store for me. I don't really want to write about that right now.
Today was the one day every 2 weeks or so that Otis can stop by to visit. Oh yeah, that's another new thing. I'm dating Otis Marroquin. It started out as an affair, but we've been officially dating for a little over a month now. It's night and day from dating or even being married to.. well you know.
Otis is amazing with both of the girls. They get so excited when he gets here. Kitty continues to be an overachiever, she's already able to walk little distances, and for Otis she'll waddle as fast as her legs can carry her. I'm starting to think she might not really know who Mat- "he" is to her. I don't particularly feel bad about that. Otis does so much for them. He's incredibly patient with Juli, that's what I notice the most. He plays with them, too. It's not beneath him to get on the floor and play dolls or princess or whatever they want. It's precious to see.
Then, he makes sure to spend time with me. Still with the girls nearby, but his focus is on me. That's so new. He asks about what I've been up to. He agreed with my therapist that writing would be a good outlet for me. But mostly we do talk about everything he's doing. He's really busy... I worry that he's going to overdo it.
He can't ever stay for very long. He has an alarm on his phone for when he needs to go catch the last train of the day. He isn't happy when it goes off. The girls aren't either. They do their best sad eyes to try to get him to stay, but again he's so good with them. He manages to make them simply excited for when he can next be here.
I won't let him see it, but that doesn't really work on me. I keep it together in front of the girls, but it hurts how much I miss him when he leaves. One day it won't be like this. Right?
until later, Gemma St. John.

I ran into Hollis at the cafe, and we had a chance to catch up. She still lives close by, but we hadn’t had the chance to have a proper conversation in a while. It seemed like we were just shuffling the girls back and forth without taking the time to really talk.
“How is married life treating you?” I asked her.
“Oh, it’s great! Mercedes and I couldn’t be more happy. She’s been getting a lot of business at the pottery studio.”
“I know Rachel is excited about that! She was so thrilled when Mercedes put one of her vases up for sale in the shop.”
“She was! Especially when she found out someone bought it!”
“That’s our little artist!”
“How are the boys doing?” Hollis asks me.
“They’re doing well. Lucas is learning to roll onto his tummy. And he’s been babbling so much lately! He hasn’t been waking up as much at night. And Brody seems to be adjusting well. I think therapy has been going ok, and things at school have improved.”
“That’s good to hear. The girls really love their new brothers.”
“Yeah, Chelsea is still a little jealous of Lucas, but we’re making progress. Rachel just adores them both.”
“I know, she doesn’t stop talking about them!”
Hollis and I talk for a few minutes longer before she has to head off. I’m glad we got to catch up a bit. With everything that’s been going on, it’s hard to make time for friends.
