Okay, this is the truth.  

Electric Abdomen is about being uncertain and Driving in California is about being invincible. They are two sides of one big complicated coin, alive and on edge about what has happened before and what is about to happen beyond the right now.

The interior of Electric Abdomen is the present tense of how uneasy it can feel inside your own skin. My own skin, your own skin, our own skin. It manifests constantly but it can come out the most when it is time to dance. Sometimes it is so clearly time to dance that the hairs on your skin are trying to pull it in different directions in order to guarantee some movement. But the brain says no as the brain often does, because of what others think, because of what appearances look like, because of how you think things are even though they mostly aren't. Electric Abdomen is how mostly all of that doesn’t matter in the right now. And how shaking a limb in the right now can maybe be the only thing that really gives the brain a rest. Electric Abdomen is about tangible hypnosis. How that uncertainty can lead to invincibility.

Driving In California came out of me on an airplane, which is unfortunately off brand for the song title, but I decide to come clean in the final verse. This is a real classic Landlady choose your own adventure. Each member of the band can make different improvised movements and raw inflections in multiple parts of the song, it keeps us limber, it keeps us happy, and it gives the music an honest flexibility that makes me want to never stop. So this recording, this version, is just one of many. Not quite infinity, but close. Infinity minus one. This version and this nearly infinite song lets me be myself, even when I change. I can aim high to be universal and broad reaching, while still being specific and truthful. I can seek out fresh air and admit when I am afraid. I can take risks even when I am uncertain. I can feel invincible, even when I know I can't possibly be.

Landlady has been a band for longer than I often consider. It is so, so easy to view the Now as the Most Important and the Only, and for the industry to make one forget the last big thing in support of the Next Big Thing. But the best part of forgetting is getting to remember again. So here we go:

Heat represents it all. Heat is an EP, a smaller thing presumably between two big things. The smallness somehow allows us to envelop more, and to play around on the spectrum of infinite time.

The first two songs go back the furthest on the timeline of what makes us Us. Two covers by two of the greatests: Sly And The Family Stone and The Talking Heads. The reasons for recording music that you love are dense and vast, but the only one that matters here is that it makes us feel very, very, very good. That attitude transmits through the history of Landlady. It's the only good reason why we do what we do to feel that way we want to feel. And all we can do is try be as good as those who make us feel the greatest.

Fast-forward to "Birds Of Prey Pt. 1," one of the first songs written by Landlady. Pre-dating our first album and not recorded until the Upright Behavior sessions, it lives and breathes today, here, as a standalone song and as connective tissue, spanning from the early days to the nowadays. The hook was written in the shower. That spans back to the earliest songwriting memories we all have.

The beginning of "I'm Afraid" was also recorded during Upright Behavior and didn't quite fit the puzzle. Heat allowed us to add an ending that grows both backward and forward, connecting then to now to tomorrow. It's about when I fell outside my apartment and went to the ER at 3am to get seven stitches in my chin. The scar attached to the song isn’t quite infinite, but it'll definitely last until I decompose.

And with decomposition comes the finale, a remix of “Dying Day,” a song about the fear of death from Upright Behavior. The reworking is done by Martin "Dosh" Dosh who is a risky general. He put his heart into giving this song an alternate universe to grow old in.

The tendrils spreading to and from Heat are vast and overlapping, complex and true, like us and like you. Dig it. And please, please enjoy the music.

We started by folding paper, and now we’re folding time. It’s been over five years since we released Slaraffenland’s We’re On Your Side, and a cool eight since their Hometapes debut, Private Cinema, declared the Copenhagen-based five-piece’s transcendence of any national, musical, or emotional border. They were at our very first Friend Island. They toured with Efterklang, Akron/Family, and Bowerbirds. They made a film with Vincent Moon, in addition to being the climactic stars in Moon’s time capsule capture of the Hometapes House in Austin during SXSW 2009. We’ve been in a long-distance relationship for the ages with Christian, Mike, Jeppe, Niklas, and Bjørn. So, after five years of building their own studio -- and their own families -- five thousand miles away from where we first met, Slow Waves landed like the world’s heaviest and prettiest postcard. 

And we’re sending it on to you. Slaraffenland is giving Slow Waves away for free in its digital form, in addition to offering an LP version (limited to 250 copies worldwide). There’s no reason not to keep in touch.

We are Endless Endless. Look at what we made for Sylvan Esso “H.S.K.T.”

Established in 1995. It’s true. Adam and I have been making for a long, long time. The Hometapes universe has always been multi-tentacled. From events like Friend Island to our “professional work” to the music and art projects we’ve created with our vast community of friends (since we were teenagers in Arkansas), our lives have been defined by a deep commitment for living and doing and doing it well.

It’s time to put a name on it. Of course, it’s gotta be good. Say it with us: Endless Endless.

Our move to Durham, NC, was accompanied by a deep dive into the rushing creative river of our friends and neighbors, Sylvan Esso. They had a new single coming out and they wanted to evolve the appearance of their 12″ series, shoot new band photos, make new merch, and, in general, pull back, see, and acknowledge the landscape they terraformed, with the power of their art over the past year. Bingo. While we were shooting photos, we had an idea for the “coolest lyric video ever.” Yesterday, it came out.

These are the last days of Pattern Is Movement. Twenty-two years after Andrew Thiboldeaux and Christopher Ward met in their hometown of Philadelphia — and thirteen years since their first show — the duo has officially announced the conclusion of the band. Pattern Is Movement’s era gave way to four critically-acclaimed albums (including 2014’s eponymous Pattern Is Movement), a playful entourage of singles and covers (time to revisit D’Angelo and Beyoncé), and years of passionate and near-iconic side-by-side live shows with Ward on drums and Thiboldeaux on Rhodes, synth, bass, and vocals. They joined the stage with a spectrum of bands that, like Pattern Is Movement, both defied and defined what it meant to create and perform music at the turn of this century: The Roots, Shudder to Think, John Vanderslice, Wye Oak, and St. Vincent (as Annie Clark’s first backing band in 2006 and again as a tourmate in 2008). Pattern Is Movement bloomed on the vines of R&B, Hip Hop, Rock, and Gospel that wrapped around them and the city of Philadelphia — where they will play their last show on June 20, 2015. And they are celebrating all the way there. Pattern Is Movement have announced a complete farewell tour (dates below), a Shaking Through session airing in mid-May, and a brand new song out on Joyful Noise’s 2015 Flexi Disc Series. 

And, over the next couple months, we’ll be traveling back through Hometapes’ last decade with Pattern Is Movement. It’s time to dive into their discography and the vast universe of media surrounding it -- and take a closer look.

Get a room: Ormonde “Lemon Incest” video The duo’s EU tour starts tomorrow!

Ormonde, the platonic sonic love child of Anna-Lynne Williams and Robert Gomez, released their debut album, Machine, on Hometapes in 2012. A year later, we all found ourselves in a motel room on Interstate Ave. in Portland, OR -- with a camera, natural light, old sheets, and Ormonde’s translated-from-the-French cover of Serge and Charlotte Gainsbourg’s controversial and beautiful duet “Lemon Incest.” Look closely and you’ll see we were under these covers, too.

We made a Pallbearer video. “Watcher in the Dark” on Pitchfork and in our dreams forever

On the first shoot, I nearly walked off the edge of a cliff and into the Pacific Ocean. I was wearing the cloak for the very first time. We hadn’t yet built the rig that would hold the long hood above my eyes to let me hike epic mountain paths, dodge mossy trees, walk the perimeter of prehistoric mounds, and meditate on cue -- all while the heat of summer (from Oregon’s Painted Hills to the loud woods of Arkansas) gathered around my body, the 10+ minute song repeating in my head.

Adam and I were moving from Oregon to North Carolina when we started this. When we finished it, I think we finally arrived.
