seteth can only sigh at the question. he’s been asked many, many times — and yet the answer has never changed. he’s never been closed at the idea of love, and yet… “there’s no one im particularly interested in at the moment, if that answers it… i would still like to make a mention to the people i hold in high regard.” he pauses, rehearsing his words in an attempt to really put his thoughts into words — he’s always struggled with compliments. “i quite respect hanneman and manuela. despite never talking to them too much, i knew i could count on them when i needed to.”

he tries to recall, he remembers his time at the academy with fondness despite the events that happened after. “jeralt managed to quickly change my mind after entering the academy alongside byleth. an earnest man, rough around the edges but still earnest nonetheless. i could tell his skills in the battlefield firsthand, i could quickly understand why he was a legend.” he looks down, hoping to conceal the ever so small tinge of sadness that flashes across his eyes.

It’s the green hair that sends a shock of rage through her, the association with Rhea that hits her in the center of her chest. She doesn’t want to be standing there, in the middle of the library with a pile of books in her arms, staring with abject anger at the back of Seteth’s head. Yet, unless she moves, that’s what she’s going to be doing.

Logically in Spirale there’s no war, no Church to oppose– but that does nothing to lessen her feelings. She’s not going to run away: she’s the Emperor, after all. Nothing can change that. She’ll face her challenges head on in a way befitting of someone her status.

It’s the shock that Seteth is alive that brings her to walk over, drop her books on the table and greet him. “You’re doing well, I see,” she says, mustering up every bit of politeness she can. “Seteth.”

it’s the feeling of someone staring right through him that makes seteth furrow his brows. he’s been alive for long enough that not even the mightiest of cities could take away his sharp senses & finesse in the battlefield. but he doesn’t react, instead, he simply keeps reading the book in his hands as if nothing was amiss.

he always noted her presence. polite, serious and composed --- the model student, even if she always carried a tinge of melancholy.

seteth gazes up, his gaze harsh and frozen. “ edelgard. ” he’s learned that the city holds threads in different times, different outcomes and different paths --- perhaps this was yet another of the city’s whims. “ i could say the same. it’s been some time. ” it doesn’t take much for seteth to keep his cool --- and yet his eyes betray him, his gaze pierces right through the emperor.

“ ... i only ask of you that we can maintain a semblance of civility in this city. ” he cuts right to the chase, never one to mess around. “ even if it’s just to simply keep up appearances. ”

he sighs heavily at that. “ ... on that we can agree on. ” the sharp words cut through him like glass --- those words feel so much more accusatory than they were probably meant. his identity, his past & the secrets he’s kept hidden for so, so long... they feel heavy on his shoulders.

“ sadly ... at times, that simply cannot be avoided. ” he doesn't face the other. he’s an adult now, seteth should meet his eye --- yet seteth feels too vulnerable, struck violently to his core by the other’s words. “ as they say, ignorance is bliss. the teachings of lady seiros have taught me that ... sometimes, even if there are no good choices, one should always strive to take the lesser evil. ” he’s only hidden his identity out of necessity, nothing else. if he could reveal his identity, he would --- it would mean living free and finally seeing the sun shine like he did in his youth. seteth knows reality is too harsh, too violent & too cruel to those who show their true self. even if this city is any different, the fear he felt when witnessing what became of zanado never truly left him.

“a sharp observation, i must say.” it’s eerily quiet around --- only the sound of the lake can be heard in the distance, the rustling of the wind becomes ever so prominent. seteth looks in the distance, a nostalgic look in his eyes. “i would know that sound even at the ends of the earth. reminds me of home.” despite the negative memory of the sound, it still remains a memory from home, it was a gift from all those that fought by his side valiantly till the very end.

“right before every battle, the winds would roar and roar --- often referred as a bad omen.” the calm before the storm, the moment to prepare and steel the minds of those hesitant. battles replay ever so quickly in his mind and how the ever so familiar sound preceded them. “we can only hope that isn’t the case this time around.”

he somehow isn’t too surprised at that. after seteth failed to react in shock, he awaited the stranger to explain themselves. “i... i can see that.” he doesn’t want to question the other too much. seteth has his fables, and the person before him had... other hobbies. “however... after teaching for many, many years --- it tends to be more difficult to get the jump on me.” living for as long as he has did make him more immune to such things.

most of the students back home knew not to mess with seteth too much, but this was a completely different setting. “i’d say you could try to sharpen your technique a little bit. say, trying something new often gives me a new perspective in how to do things better next time.” his writing was no exception. when he got stuck, he tried every word that came to mind, even if it didn’t make sense just for the sake of it.
