Samira had hoped she wouldn’t wake him but of course, he noticed she wasn’t sleeping. Pope noticed everything.
“What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice gruff.
“Nothing,” she said quickly. “Just checking my emails.”
“Why aren’t you sleeping?”
“Because I’m not tired,” she replied, trying to keep her voice light.
Pope rolled over and stared up at her, his jaw tight. She avoided his gaze as she stared at her tablet’s screen. Both were silent for several long moments before Pope muttered, “Why are you looking at that as if you’re trying to set it on fire with your mind?”
That startled a laugh out of her. She glanced at him but he wasn’t smiling. That wasn’t a surprise.
“Just…an email,” she muttered.
“What about?”
“Andrew,” she sighed and lowered the tablet, turning her gaze up at the ceiling. Don’t cry. Don’t you fucking cry.
Pope sat up and his stare hardened.
“What about, Samira?”
“It’s a link to a medical article,” she said firmly, turning the tablet to face him. “See?”
He barely glanced at it.
“I have to pee,” Samira said suddenly and threw the covers back, swung her legs out of the bed, and hurried to the bathroom. She left the tablet on the bed beside him, uncaring if he looked.
She flipped on the bathroom light and was grateful for the sound of the fan as she sat on the closed toilet seat and rested her head in her hands.
Hurry up, have a cry, wash your face, and go back to him.
The whole thing took less than three minutes. Working under Robby had trained her in the art of quick meltdowns and even quicker recoveries. When she walked back into the bedroom, she was nonplussed at the sight of Pope reading her email.
She crawled into bed and took the tablet out of his hands before shutting it down.
“You won’t fall back out with all this blue light,” she said. “Come on.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Pope laid on his side, facing her. She closed her eyes as if that could block out his stare.
“Who’s Jack Abbot?” he asked.
She squeezed her eyes closed even tighter.
“A doctor.”
“No shit.”
“A former colleague."
When he rested a hand on her shoulder, she thought for a moment that it was over. But Pope, who usually spoke as if each word cost a hundred dollars, occasionally had an impulsive need to dig and dig until Samira felt raw.
“Why would a former colleague sending you a medical article and asking how you were doing make you cry?”
She took a deep, shuddering breath and slowly opened her eyes. Pope’s jaw was still tense but his eyes were wide with worry.
“I didn’t cry.”
“Mira.”
She reached up and briefly placed her hand over his before gently bringing them both down to rest between them on the bed. She ran a thumb over his knuckles as she gathered her thoughts.
“Do you remember,” she said quietly, “when we first met, I told you that you reminded me of someone?”
Just like he had done when she had said that, all those months ago, as she stitched his hand, he stiffened for the briefest of moments.
“Someone you used to work with,” he muttered.
She nodded.
“That’s who sent the email,” she replied, as if that explained everything.
She watched Pope consider this information and almost wanted to smile.
“Couldn’t have been a good doctor,” he grunted, “if he was like me.”
She squeezed his hand.
“No, he was, is,” she said. “One of the best. It’s just…you and him kind of look alike.”
“Oh. Too bad for him.”
“Shut up, Andrew,” she insisted, leaning forward to kiss him gently.
He exhaled a breath and swallowed.
“Is that why…” he began.
“No,” she said firmly. “No, Andrew, it’s not like that.”
“Then why did the email make you cry?”
She rolled onto her back and stared at the ceiling, her eyes prickling again.
“I haven’t heard from him in a long time,” she sighed. “And just…seeing his name brought up a lot of old and complicated feelings.”
“Oh.”
She turned back to him.
“But that’s over now.”
Pope looked unconvinced.
“We weren’t together,” she said. “Never. I’m not even sure if he thought of me as anything more than a workaholic resident.”
“He was an idiot then.”
She huffed a laugh and wiped at her eyes.
“Maybe I was,” she answered before smiling at Pope. “But I’m not now.”
He shrugged.
“I don’t know,” he murmured. “You are with me.”
She grinned and playfully slapped his bare shoulder.
“Stop it,” she said, before leaning forward and kissing him. “You know I don’t like hearing you talk like that.”
“I don’t like seeing you cry over some asshole doctor.”
“He’s not an asshole,” she said. When Pope tightened his grip on her hand, she offered, “Do you want to stop talking about him?”
Pope nodded. Samira dropped her hand from his and cradled his face as she kissed him deeply. Resting her forehead against his, she closed her eyes.
“Let’s try to sleep,” she whispered. “We’ll feel better in the morning.”
Pope hummed in a manner that implied he didn’t believe her but when he gathered her into his arms, Samira suddenly felt content and briefly wondered why she had allowed herself to be so affected. It was silly, really.
