he’ll just go out for a run without saying a word if he sees Andrew’s busy. he’ll text, “I’ll be back around nine,” and then show up closer to eleven, carrying a bag from the store like nothing happened. “I got distracted,” he’ll say. and it doesn’t matter that, in the meantime, Andrew has already started mentally listing which morgues he’d have to check. Neil doesn’t mean to make him anxious. he just doesn’t see the point in updating him, because, in his head, I’m still coming back, so what does it matter when? until Andrew finally spells it out for him. “I can’t read your mind. If your plans change—text me. Call me. Just let me know you’re going to be late.” and it hits Neil like he’s just been told something completely foreign. something that shouldn’t need explaining. and yet does. but he gets it. eventually. because after everything they’ve been through, all he really wants is to know that Neil is okay, and that his absence doesn’t mean something has gone wrong.
