stiles the vampire is staked and wakes up 2000 years later surrounded by vampire hunters. he assumes theyâre hunters, anyway; theyâre all wearing little silver stakes on chains around their necks. on chains, on strings, as earrings, on tattoos, on t-shirts, stickers on the back windows of their cars. heâs constantly terrified.
finds out, after a while of near-constant panic attacks, that theyâre fans of his.
âof my death,â he says, somehow coming off casual. âof my murder, thatâs, wow! neat.â
ânot of your murder,â one girl says earnestly. âitâs about what it means. you sacrificed yourself.â
âright, yeah,â stiles says. âthat, definitely. and the stakesâit has to be stakes? not, like, hey, stiles liked, uh, star warsââ
âit was torture for you,â she says, eyes wide. âa slow, painful death.â
âthatâs... uh, yep,â stiles says, wincing. âiâm actually, actually not the biggest fan of the memory, soââ
âbut you did it for us,â she says. âfor beacon hills.â
âi guess,â stiles says. âmore like, my dad, at the time, but in a broader, more generalâuhhh, yeah,â he adds quickly. her eyes are starting to narrow. âbeacon hills, you know, where the hills are beakinâ. the beacon-est of hills. so, it worked, then?â
âyou donât know?â she says, frowning, and her stake pendant catches the light again. stiles winces.
âlook, hey, can you, uh... i donât know, can you tuck that under your shirt?â
âcloser to my heart,â she says, eyes widening. âof course!â
âyeah,â stiles says faintly. â...yeah, thatâs the reason. listen, i appreciate the... enthusiasm, you know, itâs very flattering, but i, uh...â
he shakes his head. thereâs no good way to say this.
âthere was someone with me,â he says. âsomeone, uh, maybe he died, right after, i mean, he got pretty close, butâderek hale? he mightâve been, uh, howling.â
âderek hale,â she says. âwhoâs he?â
âright,â stiles says, heart sinking. âso... but youâd know him, if he was dead. if he died with me. because of me.â
âa lot of people die,â she says. âwho was he?â
âoh, just this guy i knew,â stiles says. âjust... he wouldâve been really angry about the whole my death thing. making a scene, like. itâd be memorable.â
âit was 2000 years ago,â she says.
âright, yeah,â stiles says. âbut you still know who i am.â
âyou were our sacrifice,â she says.
itâs miserable searching for derek, half-knowing already, scaring himself, but finding his body is just a horror show. derek really did die with him. the stake that did it is still lodged in his chest, and stiles can almost laugh. can almost scream, or go on a rampage. derek wasnât even a vampire.
but no oneâs heart likes being punctured.
he just hates it. stiles just hates it, he hates the freaking sight of it. derek pierced through like that.
he almost grabs at the stake, just tugs at it. he wants to just get it out of him. but he canât risk doing worse damage. even if it doesnât really make sense that thereâs so much left of derek after so long. the thought of his still-too-familiar body crumbling into dust with one sudden move is horrifying.
he kind of rubs at the spot, warms it up. works the stake out slow.
âsorry, iâm sorry, iâm sorry,â he says. he can barely even look at what heâs doing, his hands are going numb just hovering over where derekâs body is. heâs lightheaded, heâs gonna be sick. âi just have to, iâm sorry, i just canâtâŚâ
âhow,â and then he doesnât care. âi, holy shit.â leaning over him, feeling it, derek warm again, his chest rising and falling, and stiles drops his head against it, tears-blind. âoh my god, youâre really breathing.â
âis that surprising?â derek says hoarsely, and stiles pulls back enough to watch him cough up dust.
ânot to really spring this on you, but youâve been not breathing for kind of a long time,â stiles says. itâs a relief to go back to rambling at him. âtwo thousand years long, actually, and you shouldâve seen what you looked like when i found you. you were mummified. fermented, you were kimchi.â
âgood thing you were here,â derek says dryly.
âyou say that sarcastically,â stiles says. âbut yeah, it was! you have no idea what a pain in the ass it was to find you.â
âsorry to inconvenience you,â derek says.
âshut up, iâve never been more relieved,â stiles says. âiâderek, i swear to god. iâm going crazy here. iâm scared of everybody. especially my fans,â he adds. âthey think iâm, like... all-knowing. and purposeful.â
âsounds perfect for you,â derek says.
âha, youâd think,â stiles says. ânever leave me. youâre the only one who knows how full of shit i am.â
âalways so flattering,â derek says.
âsarcasm,â stiles says. âiâve missed that so much. you know how straightforward people are with me? they think i grant wishes. they take all my jokes literally!â
ânightmare,â derek says, shaking his head, and then stiles says, âi missed you.â
voice low, close to breaking.
âstiles,â derek says.
âi thought you were dead,â stiles says. âlike really dead, like neverââ
and derekâs hugging him, heâs struggling to breathe.
âyou brought me back,â derek says. âyou did that.â
and stilesâ hands are shaking.
âi thought i was,â he says, âtwo thousand years away from you. i thought i needed a time machine, if i wanted to see you again.â
âwerewolves live for a long time,â derek says, and stiles takes a shuddering breath, yeah.
so do vampires, apparently.
âgood,â derek says. âgood.â
âwho is he?â that first follower says, when she finds them. derek sleeping, stiles just watching him.
âthe most important guy in the world?â stiles says, he is. the actually most important one.
sheâs listening, because of course sheâs listening. somehow, he has devotees.
âhis nameâs derek,â stiles tells her. âand if anything happens to him, itâll kill me.â
[maybe stiles shouldnât have trusted the girl who opened with you were our sacrifice.]
