He wasn’t sure that was the real problem. Fabian felt ashamed when he realized Gideon was different. He felt selfish. Disappointed.
But she was right. Odette Doge, the young lass who would constantly follow him and Elphias around, was so bloody right he was unsure of how to respond. For a second, he forgot who was older. Who was taller. Fabian needed to be there for Gideon no matter the changes. He was struggling with something and regardless of the fallout, he had a duty to be there for his brother and to love him no matter what.
“When did you get so wise?” He mindlessly mumbled as he continued along their path, his movements lacking any of his usual swagger. A tentative hand moved to run through his hair, a cough destroying the slight awkward silence that followed her kind thoughts. He replayed each word, each syllable about a thousand times on high speed. Sometimes Fabian thought too much and it left nothing but a chilling quiet to surround he and whoever was foolish enough to have a real conversation with him in the first place.
His mother used to think he was deaf, often spending large chunks of his childhood shouting responses across short distances. Eventually she realized the same thing everyone else did: the bastard was just stuck in his own head. He understood the annoyance, especially when his mind would wander off mid-sentence because he was too busy thinking of the future while his mouth was spewing bullshit about the present. So instead of explaining to her friends that he had a hearing impairment, she simply smiled and called him a revolutionary. It was a bit much, but he never argued with her. He liked the title.
So it was no surprise when, after every beautiful thought and sentiment she gifted him, the same ones he saved and tucked away, fabian chose to comment on the one that didn’t fit. “Y’know, ya say that stuff a lot.” His comment was as blunt as he could make it, but not angry. After Halloween, he was fully aware that there were some things the two weren’t discussing one being the attraction he vehemently pushed aside. Where he avoided the topic, Odette had no qualms about sprinkling it on every conversation. “Keep it up an’ I might start to get the wrong idea, Dotty. Or the right one. Depends on how ya look at it.”
Maybe this was his attempt at escaping a serious topic, unaware that he was broaching an even worse one.
she couldn’t help the soft chuckle that his words ellicited, the awe for thoughts that many would consider far beyond her years amusing her about as much as they flattered her. in reality, she didn’t consider herself to be wise at all. that was elphias. he had always carried the role graciously, offering guidance even when she was deadset against it. his brain and manner were taken from the world far too soon and those close to him would not be the only ones that eventually felt that loss. so when she spoke and by chance happened to stumble across an idea that was mildly mature, she could only credit it to him and what he had left behind in her. that or the way his passing impacted her soul. odette wasn’t one for basking in genuine compliments though, even if some might gasp at that revelation. for someone that used to be so dependant on praise, it seemed that lately she shied away from such banalities, the more genuine they were the more she’d brush them off and clammer to the next subject.
on this occasion though, she was entirely blindsided. here’s the thing... she liked their little entanglement. in fact, she thoroughly enjoyed the comfort that came with mindlessly flirting away as he outwardly ignored the advances altogether. save for that ONE NIGHT where their bodies took over on their behalf and their innate attraction was undeniable, odette could live with longing from afar. she was perfectly fine with the nature of their confusing relationship. because although there were layers and layers of truth within the continuous ramblings she spewed out, there was also a safety in relying on the fact that he didn’t seem to want to talk about it or was okay with denying they were mutual in any capacity. because, if they kept it as a joke or something that wasn’t meant to be addressed, then there was no way she could get hurt. and thus, her favorite fantasy would remain unscathed. suffice to say, she was not expecting the following words coming from him.
so, eyes wide and jaw hanging slightly, the blonde managed to sputter out a short laugh. ❛ not sure we see eye to eye on what would be a good thing there, fabi. ❜ the younger girl scrambled to gather her thoughts, aching for any funny remark that would rescue her from the direction their conversation was headed. she wasn’t quite prepared for him to know the depths of her feelings for him and it was quite possible that should he poke and prod, even if lightly, she wouldn’t be able to hold herself back from spilling her guts.
it had been years in the making, afterall. from the first moment fabian prewett set foot in their home, odette doge had been enamoured. completely awe struck by his striking features and the kindness that shone in his deep amber hues. the softness with which he treated all magical creatures and critters, a stark contrast to the passion and cadence that burst forward whenever he fought for their rights. dotty loved him before she could even grasp what the concept meant. even her brother would often tease her about it before he got cross over the magnitude and seriousness of the affliction. how could someone so small feel so vehemently? it was a mystery to everyone around her. even when she ultimately pushed past the stupid dreams he starred in and she ventured onto the dating scene, when she finally caught the eye of other boys and beckoned their attention, she still deeply craved for him to sweep her away from it all. how was it that throughout it all, he was still a constant in her heart? could she even bear the thought of his final rejection? for now it was merely unspoken.
❛ didn’t figure it bothered you much... if i’m pushing the boundaries a bit too liberally, i suppose it won’t be too difficult to keep those thoughts to myself again. ❜ she offered shakily, bright blues darting across his face in search of any clue.
