❝     yeah,   of course.   ❞     scott answers quickly,   well before he has the chance to think about it.   it’s a knee jerk reaction these days,   to assure people he’s sleeping properly,   that he’s eating properly,   that he’s okay.  he’s become a broken record,   repeating the same reassurances over and over again.   i’m okay, i’m okay, i swear, i’m okay, i’m okay, i’m okay.   the thing is   ———   even scott isn’t sure who he’s trying to convince anymore.    

looking after himself has become harder and harder.   he has so much pressure on his shoulders,   so many things he has to be focusing on that self care slips out of his mind.   why would he take time to look after himself when he could be checking in on his friends?   or his mom?   or working?   or studying?   or waiting for the next threat to wander into town?   he doesn’t have time to worry about making himself three meals a day,  or drinking water or sleeping more than a few hours each night.

but,   she asks with such sincerity and concern,   that he cracks slightly.   brows dipping,   lips pursing slightly as he actually thinks about his answer.

she runs soft fingers through dark hair and presses a tender kiss against his skin.   and he smiles,   not the room lighting grin he usually wears,  but one much softer,   one reserved only for moments like this,   reserved only for moments with her.   even when she moves her lips away,   there is an imprint of warmth left behind in her wake,  that warmth radiates,   spreading along his skin,   diving deep below and rooting itself into his bones.   this is what love is,   his heart whispers.   i’ll never love anyone like this again.   she is the only girl that i’ll ever want.

scott allows his eyes to flutter closed,  head shifting forward to gently press his forehead against hers,   a soft breath exhaled as he lifts a hand to press gently against where her throat and shoulder meet.   his body is tangled with hers,   sheets draped messily over the two of them,   his body heat enough to keep the two of them warm without a blanket thrown over them too.
