I Have Been A Larry Since 2012

Oh wow, I cannot imagine the types of things you encounter working on crisis PR management. Must be nuts. Especially when you then see all of the story you came up with to manage a situation be out to the public. And you know that it was just something you came up with but the public takes it as real.

Kinda like all of the ever-changing Holivia timelines and narratives. That have, no doubt, been made up by a publicist just like the ‘relationship’.

The entertainment world is crazy. I think a lot of new fans may not yet have understood that doing PR and stunts is not something that only happens to HL, but literally every single celeb needs to do it. Lots of “friendships” we see only exist as promo around a new launch or to divert from some bad press. 

A really obvious one that always comes to mind for me was when Selena Gomez and Zedd pretended to date as part of the promo for their collab. They posted about each other, did ‘late night facetime lives together’ and hinted at a relationship for a convenient amount of time. Then the song came out and crickets. And to this day it’s reported that they ‘dated’, even tho nothing was ever officially ‘confirmed’.

Doing PR is the standard, especially in Hollywood, like we’re seeing with Holivia. It’s their oldest trick. And people fall for it every time. Although this stunt has been hanging on by minimal effort from H and just a couple sets of pap pics. It’s that easy.

Why do you need constant “content” to believe a couple is together? Let’s see... 2016. Louis was saddled with pretending he was a dad and having to stroll around the Calabasas Commons every day, having romantic vacations pap picture opportunities with his new girlfriend beard, Harry was shooting Another Man, and in France and LA shooting a film with no set access, then in Jamaica writing and recording an album in secret.

Oh, and in between all of that Louis’ mother and Harry’s step father were both dying of cancer.

And you think because there was less “content” that proves the existence of their relationship to you that they must have broken up.

I’ll entertain you a little anyway. There were moments in between all the madness. Like this rumor about Louis in Ibiza and this moment connecting Louis to Harry and Alessandro Michele which, on its own could be a very odd coincidence, but Louis does this over and over and over (following photographers connected to Harry, tweeting about a show that just happens to star actors who we soon learn are also in Dunkirk etc etc). But more importantly, after this hideous start to the year, where both Harry and Louis are papped/sighted almost non stop, they both basically disappear starting in September and October and, while Louis is likely also in the UK during this time visiting Jay while she’s in hospital, it also seems likely he’s in Jamaica while Harry is recording.

I honestly never thought I would be so annoyed to have new fans. It’s truly exhausting to answer these questions over and over and to be expected to pull receipts proving or disproving every incident over the last 10 years.

This is me reaching back into my brain a bit because it was a while ago, but I think at the time we thought Harry literally sought Jeff/Irving out as allies. 

Once again, I don’t know why people are painting Jeff as this weird insidious person who had nefarious motives for years, and not someone whose father is notoriously powerful in the industry/who Harry himself sought out and befriended. 

It’s totally possible that people do get groomed, but I think people are purely assuming that because, as I said, they want to pretend Harry has been tricked into singing a solo contract and tricked into a solo career and tricked into the closet when it’s far more likely that he picked Irving and Jeff to be his allies because he wanted them on his side, and he signed that contract full well knowing the game plan would be staying closeted for at least a while.

Why do they hate Harry? You have to ask them. I’m sure they’ve created fantastical masterposts of every imagined evil thing Harry has ever done. I have no idea if they’re all ex-larries. I’m sure some are. There are solo louis stans and then there are “rads” (radical louies was the term someone gave them) who often are ex-larries, but not always. 

In very generalized terms, Solo Louies, IMO, tend to just stay in their lane and support Louis as their fave and focus on how much they love him and what they can do to support him. Rads do this, but also seem to spend an enormous amount of time blogging about how they hate Harry, blogging about how Harry is a horrible person who is the reason for all that plagues Louis’ career, and also think larries only support Louis because he’s “an accessory” to Harry (thus the idiocy of “larries are harries”).

Antis tend to believe Harry and Louis were never together and Louis is Freddie’s dad. Some believe both Harry and Louis are straight. Houies think H/L were together, but broke up. Generally these people also are either solo Louis or solo Harry fans and I don’t even think people use the term “houie” anymore. 

Obviously there’s overlap among lots of “factions”

I’m not sure if you’re both the same person, or you both had the same idea today. But here are the few I have!

Take My Breath Away by @realitybetterthanfiction (E, 154K) Also known as The Top Gun fic. One of the things I love about this is that it’s told from Harry’s PV and it’s such a wonderful, intimate characterization of him – you really get to see so many sides of Harry and this author writes them all so well. It’s action packed, funny, deeply moving, and has such a satisfying ending. You will be so wrung out after reading this fic – this author puts you through it, but it’s SO worth it. Great banter, great side characters, action, smut…it has it all.

my heart is breathing for this moment in time by usedtothebeach (E, 160K) Based on The Time Traveler’s Wife. Probably my absolute favorite time travel fic. I’ve read it more times than I’d like to admit, and every time I love it more. One of the things I like most is how organically the author weaves in canon events…every little moment is an easter egg without it being so obvious that it pulls you out of the fic. Anyway, this one is so moving and so absorbing, I hope you like it if you give it a try! There’s an 18K companion piece to it as well, but you’ll see the link at the appropriate time when you’re reading the main fic (and when you read the scene that breaks your heart –– in the best possible way –– come and scream at me. You’ll know which one I mean).

I would name the stars for you (I would take you there) by orphan_account (M, 91K) Based loosely on Notting Hill. This is just beautifully written. Angst. Mutual pining. Dumb boys. Beautiful descriptions of art and creativity and fame and beautiful poetry. 

Three Days Underwater by theteapirate (E, 10K) AU based on the film Weekend, directed by Andrew Haigh. This is really a beautifully written fic but I’m warning you, it’s got an open ending so if you can’t deal with that, don’t read it. But if you can….wow, it’s lovely. 

Take Me Home (Country Roads) by Awriterwrites / @a-writerwrites (E, 87K) A Northern Exposure AU. Probably my favorite of this author’s many fics. Set in rural West Virginia, this hate to love fic is funny, touching, super sexy, painful and features big city doctor Louis vs country boy healer Harry.

bloodsport by @tofiveohfive / @sunflowrsix (E, 40K) American football, exes to lovers, wonderfully written characterizations and, once again…made me cry. Loosely based on Friday Night Lights.

Yellow by 13ways / @13ways-of-looking (E, 85K) Yes, it’s Batman/Catwoman. No, you don’t need to know anything about the comics or the movies. But wow! Such good pacing, the smut scenes are fire, the concept is so original and keeps you guessing until the very end. 

Sometimes Fires Don‘t Go Out by abrighteryellow / @a-brighter-yellow (E, 17K) Loosely based on Empire Records. I love this fic. The quirky friendships, the banter, the secret crush, the banter…it’s such a fun read with a really satisfying conclusion.

You Are The Blood by sacrasticfluentry (E, 176K) If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you’ve probably read this one. But if you haven’t, what are you waiting for? I don’t even like HP and I LOVED this fic. It’s a thrilling story and it’s full of ridiculously hot smut.

everything that shine ain’t always gonna be gold by sarcasticfluentry (E, 49K) Based on Inception. This fic is just too good to not have read. You don’t need to know anything about the movie that inspired it. It’s got great OT5, it’s super sexy, it’s got a terrific story line, and the pacing is just right for a nail biter.

Tainted Saints and Velvet Vices by Toomanytears (E, 126K) Let me start by saying that I know next to nothing about Harry Potter, but this crossover was so much fun to read. I thought this author did a terrific job of creating a realistic hatred/rivalry and growth for both boys so when they come together it’s as good for us as it is for them (well, maybe they have more fun — the smut is slow burn, but it’s well done)!

Run Like the Devil by Benzos (E, 140K) Based on Supernatural TV series. If you like supernatural elements and demons and dark themes, this fic has it in spades. In a way it’s almost more of a character study, and it’s unsurprisingly pretty OOC, but it’s very well done. Read the tags.

we’ve got the world in our hands by sarcasticfluentry (E, 55K) A Mutants AU. I read this one ages ago with very little interest in superhero movies and I literally couldn’t put this down. It’s just really well paced and has great dialogue and characterizations and I could easily read this fic if it’d had been twice as long.

Who Painted The Moon Black by throughthedark (E, 96K) This is the Hunger Games AU. It’s super intense, there’s a lot of dark themes (the E is not for smut, let’s put it that way), but there’s a happy ending. SO well written. 

And an anon reminded me of this fic (which I haven’t read, but I know a lot of people have liked):

Hello everyone!!

In the last few days I have been getting several messages about Olivia Wilde. And I wanted to clear some things up.

I am a larrie. I believe Larry are together. That means I think they are currently dating/committed/in a relationship. I think they are partners and have been for the past 10 years. I love Harry and Louis. This is a blog about them and their lives and careers. I will always support them as individuals and as a couple.

With that being said, part of my blog is covering the stunts they are in as that is part of their careers too. However, what I don’t want to start doing is covering their stunt’s lives. Of course I will talk about and post about their stunts/beards  - but that goes as far as it is related to Harry and/or Louis. If Olivia Wilde has done an instagram live, or said whatever - I honestly don’t care. I don’t follow her career. I hadn’t heard of Olivia in years, and I’m ok with not knowing what she’s up to. If she does something stunt-related then I will cover and talk about it. But I don’t want this blog to become the “keeping up with Olivia Wilde show”. 

This isn’t towards anyone in particular, and if you’ve sent me a message about Olivia, don’t feel bad for it. But going forward I wanted to make that clear.

I think the thing is that none of them are the progressives the fandom make them out to be, and it’s unfair kind of all around. 

On the one hand, it puts the entire band on a pedestal and that’s not fair on them. On the other hand it also means that any time any of them do something not great, it’s often kind of swept under the rug or people don’t really know how to let people have multiple feelings on that. 

People equally portray Louis as some kind of…like ‘communist king’…because he sometimes tweets things that allude to him being class conscious. But you wouldn’t give any other random person you know brownie points for alluding to class every now and then on social media, so I think it’s a bit much that people kind of portray him as ‘man of the people’, when he’s, you know, a normal white millionaire who seems like a decent person. But he’s hardly a massive activist, and nor are any of them. 

Similarly, I think people do give Harry too much credit for things like waving flags or stickers because that is, as you say, ultimately in the realm of performative activism. I think it’s a valid critique to say that BLM and no gun violence stickers and pride flags etc have been kind of co-opted into Harry’s performance aesthetic, rather than being things he talks about openly. And you can see how that manifests in some fans, who may be not queer (obviously some of us are, but let’s not pretend), bringing queer flags to shows to try and get his attention or interact, which is a bit……

I think the thing I am starting to feel really uncomfortable with as a queer person, is being in a fandom where Harry’s flag waving and like…dressing like Prince…is considered to be really progressive queer politics. It’s totally fair to enjoy it and have fun with him as a fan, and I don’t know that he can be as loud as he wants to be, but I do think at some point you kind of have to admit that he’s particularly quiet in his activism when it comes to speaking about it or using his immense platform (he has the biggest social media reach of anyone on earth other than BTS….let that sink in) to say something. Like I think it’s…disappointing…that he’s such a big British celeb and will wave the trans flag on stage, but hasn’t said a single thing about the current transphobia becoming law in the UK. I feel icky about it. I am happy to enjoy him as a fan but I’m not going to say he’s some kind of big activist, when he’s not. 

Of all of the members of ot5, Zayn is, in my opinion, the one who has made the most open political statements (at least in the past), and he did it full well knowing it was going to piss people off. The Free Palestine tweet, the wearing the keffiyeh. I think it’s really sad that a lot of people kind of…mentally pretend he wasn’t ever there and strip him of the things he did as the person of colour in the band. Like I’m straight up a little bit suss about people who ‘hate Zayn’ like…why?
