Prologue to Space Nurse, an ovoid mystery
âIf everyone were as good a person as you are, what would the world be like?â - Asked by a woman of doubtful sanity.
Planet Titanâs youngest judge in a century made her first landmark decision on the accountability of cyborgs with compromised programming. She went on to shape legal president on a number of other significant issues. She was also, as the latest article on her pointed out, the only judge in the known universe who could boast 100% scores in every test she ever took, apart from a coloring contest she partook in when she was three years old. She never did pick up a crayon after that. Regardless of her failings in art, she continued to exert substantial influence on four major planets and countless asteroid, moon and space station settlements.
This timeless genius went around in the shape of a young woman with pale slender limbs, long dark hair and big eyes. Her name was Ali Maa, and it had been written that her blue grey eyes looked into the souls of those she judged in such a way that they were changed forever.
Yet, in the case before her, even though she spent months and used all her influence, she has failed to deliver justice for the most vulnerable victim to ever come before her.
The child was an orphan, tortured and killed.
Ali could not get over it. She would not move on. âIf,â she said, knowing it would be her last words as a judge. âIf there is no justice for one as innocent and vulnerable as this, there will be no justice for anyone.â
The reporters on the stairs of the judicial building jostled and milled around her. Words floated on the cold gusts of wind that blew her hair in her face, made noise in her ears: ââŚmeaning of this âŚ. VigilanteâŚ."
The weather, an ongoing experiment of Titanâs latest weather generator, made the hovering ball camera video grainy as it zoomed in on her face.
âNo,â Ali said, and didnât pause her descent of the stairs, her coat flapping in the wind. âI have something else entirely in mind.â She did not explain, they would not understand. She climbed into her travel pod and that was the last the public saw of her.
In a world where everyone is good and self-governing there would be no crime and no need for justice. She knew this was impossible and she did not care. The word impossible was just one more thing that went on the long list of things she did not care for.
How much more would the world have in resources, if crime did not exist? Â She became obsessed, a failure, a young star burnt out. Her life was destined to fade into obscurity until she hired an apprentice. His name was Will, and he was both scientist and artist.
When two fanatics get together, they often turn their energy towards each other, each feeding off the other in a kind of inward spiraling whirlwind that does not go anywhere. Sometimes, however, they turn to the world like an anticyclone. Like a high-pressure system blowing winds of change through populations, scouring the lands and uprooting what they will not have. In the case of Ali and Will, they created the Age of Integrity.
What follows takes place in a utopian world where everyone grows up to be a good personâŚ
