Growing up, I donāt have a single memory of my parents reading me a story about ramadan, or salat, or anything even remotely related to my religion. There were simply no books for something like that. I didnāt grow up in an Arab country- whatever arabic media about this topic that existed for children was beyond me.
So I grew up without these bedtime stories like many of my muslim friends, whoāve been displaced or immigrated for one reason or another, and grew up abroad from their native countries of origin. Ā I never even heard or read books about characters who were like me; there simply were none (well except for that one book ādoes my head look big in thisā, comment below if you know what Iām talking about hehe).
In any case, there are millions out there like me, and though weāve managed to find a place to connect and feel like we belong and continued our traditions and held on to our faith, it doesnāt hurt to have books out there about muslim things, or movies or shows. We might be all grown up now, but hopefully things can be different for our younger sisters and brothers and even kids.
With that being said, Iād like to introduce you to this wonderful book by Anitha Rathod about Ramadan which is perfect to read to young kids especially with Ramadan starting in a few months, this is a great way to explain and introduce the month to them!
