Seeing as Hidden Home is now run from the East Coast, we decided to mark our territory and put out an artist from our operating region. Please put your hands together for our best buddies and the band that has seen me more intoxicated-er than anyone else: A VERY SPECIAL EPISODE!!

My NY band played our second show with AVSE in October of 2018, when I still knew practically nobody here. They were dressed like the kids in Good Charlotte’s “Predictable” music video, and boy-oh-boy did they rule. I ran up to them after their set to tell them that I “don’t usually like goth bands” but they were amazing and blew my mind. They responded by telling me that they weren’t actually a goth band, and then - true story - invited us to a goth-themed Halloween party. It ended with their drummer Chayse half-demonstrating a “running 69” and a giant man ever so casually but matter-of-factly telling me that I’m a “very hot ginger.” Me and the band have been friends ever since.

Mike visited NYC, met the band at a group hang, and we all got along gingerly (no pun intended). When I sent them their record, he was like “Woah, this is really good!” He wasn’t surprised - he just liked it a lot. Their new record is called Fix Your Hearts or Die, and not only does it rule, but it’s coming out later this year via us and EWEL Records.

Their new single, “Introspectre,” comes out this Friday. To celebrate, they’ll be premiering a live stream set through bandNada on Saturday at 9 PM EST - that’s 7 for Idahoans and 6 for Californians ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Pre-save the single or pick up something on Bandcamp to be notified when it comes out.

AVSE sounds different than anything we’ve released before and I’m stoked to change it up. They push musical boundaries, care deeply about their art, and are a creative force that genuinely excites me. I hope they excite you too.

Today is the day! The new Acoustic Split is officially OUT. You can stream the new tracks by Dennis Jagard, Sef Idle, Rob Lanterman, and Russ Worstell wherever you stream your tunes, and of course we have cassettes as well.

Every week leading up to the release of the upcoming 4-way ACOUSTIC SPLIT, we’ll be sitting down with one of the artists and discussing their songs, amongst other things. This week, Dennis Jagard sat down with Rob from HHR to talk about what it means to have a “music career,” the early days of Ten Foot Pole and Scared Straight, and how you can get him to play your house (hint: he wants to). Additionally, Dennis breaks down his portion of the split, including the most recently released single, “California Feels Like Home.”

Hey there, ho there (Bob from That 70’s Show Voice). We’re happy to announce that we will be a small part of a Boise-based acoustic “punk” split featuring Dennis Jagard (of the legendary Ten Foot Pole), Sef Idle (from False Idle and Unisef), our beloved Russ Worstell (of SKiTTiSH iTZ and Upinatem), and me (Rob Lanterman - I run this label and have been in Urban Outfielders, Sheep Among Wolves, and most recently (The Real) Problem Dog).

Vinyl will be available through the kind folk at People of Punk Rock Records in Canada, and I highly recommend you get on that soon! I’m so busy pressing other people’s music on vinyl that none of mine has ever gotten that treatment - SO THIS IS REALLY SPECIAL!

If you don’t have a record player, get one. But if you can’t get one and still want to own the release in some physical form, you can grab it on CD from Simpul Records and Cassette via Hidden Home.

Happy New Year and welcome to the new Hidden Home Records newsletter.

Some of you may know that we’ve had an on-and-off monthly newsletter for the last few years that you could sign up for on our website. I (Rob) am definitely grateful that so many people signed up in our early days, but at this point, it doesn’t serve the vision we currently have for this label.

So we’ve decided to take a cue from several other notable peers and make a substack. You can subscribe and it will show up in your inbox every week, but you can also read the posts at hiddenhomerecords.substack.com.

This will not be Hidden Home-exclusive, and submissions are open to all subscribers! Instead of trying to invite people into our inner circle, we hope this will do more to contribute to the greater DIY/punk community we’re a part of. We want this to be your newsletter as much as it is ours. To submit ideas and get involved, please subscribe and we’ll send you the link to the Hidden Home Records Discord server.

(Note: If you haven’t used Discord before, no worries! It’s really easy to use).

But wait - that’s not all! For a couple of years now, we’ve been trying to put together a zine. Physical, made of paper, etc. I’m happy to say that’s finally coming to fruition! The Hidden Home zine is going to reflect the newsletter, but also include more art, poetry, photography, and other projects people want to contribute. For the record, these WILL go out with orders and if we accept your submissions, people WILL see your work.

While not an official HHR release, (The Real) Problem Dog features members myself and members of Whippin Shitties, Young, Planetary, Carry on, Kid, and SKiTTiSH iTZ and is very tied to our family here. Again, you can download the songs for free on Bandcamp, but if you’d like a tape just venmo me $3 for shipping @Rob-Lanterman and we’ll get those to you.

These are some of the best kids in the Boise music scene. They work hard and treat people well. Also, they make some good memes. They’ll be playing Treefort 2020, and you can expect to see them do some touring as well. But what’s that? You’re not familiar with them? Well, let’s fill you in. Once referred to as “emo” by isthisbandemo.com and rejected for having a “not-so-cool name” by a reputable indie label (which cannot be identified due to legal reasons), Whippin’ Shitties have been spreading their introspective indie-punk tunes for the last several years out of Boise, ID. With two EPs and a strong following in the Pacific Northwest, this quartet of mechanics, YouTubers, skateboarders, and sick boys are bringing more of their unique brand of midwest – er, middle of the Northwest – emo songs to you via a new 7″ out (who knows when) on Hidden Home Records.
