The iron doors of the Wonderland throne room did little to muffle the sound of a bouncing leather ball, followed closely by the distinct, metallic ping of an object striking a guard’s helmet.
Bridget, the Queen of Hearts, did not look up from her ledgers. Her crimson gown spilled over the dais like fresh blood. Her posture was as rigid as the executioner’s axe resting near her throne.
"If that projectile touches my crown," Bridget said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, gravelly purr, "I will have your head mounted on the garden gates by noon."
"Technically, Your Majesty, it was a tangerine," you replied, catching the fruit deftly out of the air. You took a dramatic bow, the brass bells on your jester’s cap letting out a soft, mocking chime that echoed through the cavernous hall. "And it was aiming for Lord Pinkerton’s left eyebrow. My aim is impeccable; your crown is entirely safe."
From her seat slightly below the throne, Princess Red failed to hide a snort, burying her face quickly into her schoolbook to mask her amusement. Maddox Hatter—your older sibling and Red's official royal tutor—let out a heavy, long-suffering sigh from across the room. They adjusted their brass-rimmed spectacles, their fingers stained with ink and clockwork oil.
Bridget glared down at you, her fingers tightening around her quill until the wood groaned. "You are an insufferable nuisance. The only reason your neck remains intact is because my daughter insists on keeping you around. If it were up to me, you’d be Paint for the white roses."
"Of course, Your Majesty. I live only to serve the princess," you said, flashing a brilliant, entirely unbothered grin. You brushed a stray lock of your hair behind your ear, adjusting the fit of your fitted velvet bodice.
You caught Maddox’s eye. They slowly shook their head, their expression a mix of sibling fondness and genuine worry. Stop pushing your luck, their eyes said clearly. Next to them, Red caught your eye and gave you a subtle, encouraging thumbs-up.
Bridget caught the silent exchange and felt a familiar, deeply irritating twinge in her chest. Why, she thought to herself, rubbing her temples, why do I always end up interested in someone from the Hatter family? Maddox was already a permanent fixture in the castle, constantly muttering about gears, temporal anomalies, and pocket watches. And now, she had to endure their younger sister—a chaotic whirlwind of silk, bells, and dangerous charm who had somehow secured the position of Court Jester.
Bridget convinced herself daily that she only tolerated you because Red lacked joy in her life. A queen had to make concessions for her heir. It had absolutely nothing to do with the way the throne room felt entirely too quiet on the days you were off duty, or how her eyes automatically tracked the curves of your silhouette whenever you danced through the hall. Bridget had known for a lifetime that her desires leaned strictly toward women, but she had locked those desires away alongside her capacity for mercy. She told herself her fixation on you was purely logistical.
The turning point came three weeks later, during a formal banquet for the visiting Wonderland nobility. The room was suffocatingly tense. Bridget sat at the head of the table, radiating an aura of pure, unadulterated menace that kept the dukes and duchesses trembling into their soup.
It was time for your performance.
You walked to the center of the Hall, juggling three spinning, Raspberry-red pies. Red leaned forward, her eyes bright with anticipation. Maddox leaned back, already bracing themselves for disaster.
You intended to execute a perfect, comedic toss, tossing the pies into the air and catching them on a velvet tray. But as you pivoted, one of your jester bells caught on a decorative tapestry. Your form wobbled.
Time seemed to slow down. You lost your footing, tumbling backward onto the polished marble floor with a loud thud. The velvet tray went flying. Two of the pies landed squarely on the faces of two pompous dukes.
The third pie—inflated with an experimental, highly elastic yeast Maddox had helped you concoct—sailed directly toward the royal dais.
Maddox gasped, covering their eyes. Red froze. The entire room went dead silent, the absolute vacuum of sound signaling impending doom.
The pie struck Bridget right in the center of her chest.
Because of the elastic yeast, it didn't splatter. Instead, it made a loud, ridiculous BOING sound, bounced off her royal corset, and landed perfectly in her lap, completely whole.
You sat on the floor, rubbing your hip, internally preparing to face the cards. You had pushed it too far. The Queen of Hearts was going to execute you, and Maddox would have to build a time machine just to undo your stupidity.
Bridget sat frozen. She looked down at the raspberry-red , bouncing pie in her lap. She looked up at your wide, terrified eyes. The court held its collective breath, waiting for the command of "Off with her head!"
A strange sound broke the silence. It was a sharp, choked noise.
Bridget’s shoulders began to shake. Then, to the absolute horror and bewilderment of everyone present, the Queen of Hearts burst into a genuine, ringing laugh.
It wasn't her usual cruel, mocking cackle. It was a real, breathless, joyful laugh—the kind of sound Bridget hadn't made since she was a teenager baking tarts in a bright pink dress. She laughed so hard she had to press a hand to her stomach, her crown tilting slightly askew.
You stared at her from the floor, completely struck dumb. In that single, fleeting moment, the terrifying tyrant vanished. Behind the heavy makeup and the sharp posture, you saw her. You saw the woman who used to love sweet things and bright days. Your heart did a strange, violent flip in your chest.
"Look at you all," Bridget finally gasped, wiping a tear of mirth from her eye as her laughter subsided into amusement. "You look like you’ve seen a ghost. Jester! Clean up this mess. Your clumsiness is pathetic, but... mildly amusing."
From that night on, everything changed. The slow burn of realization turned into a quiet obsession. You didn't just perform to pass the time or to make Red smile anymore. You performed for her. You wanted to hear that sound again. You wanted to coax those tiny, buried pieces of happiness back to the surface, even if Bridget fought tooth and nail to keep them hidden.
You started subtly altering your routines. You stopped the loud, disruptive gags and turned to clever, sharp-witted banter designed specifically to catch Bridget off guard. You would leave little mechanical trinkets on her desk—clocks that played her favorite old melodies when wound, courtesy of Maddox’s workshop—and pretend you knew nothing about them.
Bridget, meanwhile, went into a state of aggressive psychological denial.
"The Jester will accompany us to the war room," Bridget commanded one morning, fixing her crown in a mirror
Maddox paused, looking up from their blueprints. "Your Majesty? The war room? She is a jester. Her primary skill is making balloon animals."
"Red requires a distraction from her studies," Bridget snapped, her cheeks flushing a light, uncharacteristic pink. "And the Jester’s presence keeps the young princess engaged. It is a calculated tactical decision."
"Red isn't even attending the war council, Your Majesty," Maddox pointed out dryly.
"Silence, Hatter! Do not question your Queen!"
A few days later, Red and Maddox were sitting in the courtyard, watching you try to teach a pair of castle guard dogs how to dance on their hind legs. From a high balcony overlooking the garden, Bridget was heavily concealed behind a velvet curtain, pretending to read a decree while staring unblinkingly down at you.
"Twenty gold coins says Mom breaks by the end of the month," Red whispered, nudging Maddox with her elbow.
Maddox didn't even look up from the pocket watch they were soldering. "Make it thirty, and you have a deal. Her Majesty is incredibly stubborn. She’s currently inventing a royal decree about 'mandatory morale inspections' just so my sister has to check in with her three times a day. She'll last at least until the Solstice."
"You underestimate how hard she is flirting," Red countered, grinning as she watched you look up at the balcony and give a dramatic, sweeping wink toward the curtain.
Up on the balcony, Bridget sharply pulled the curtain shut, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She saw me, Bridget thought, her face burning. The insufferable, ridiculous, beautiful woman...
Months bled into one another, the tension between you and the Queen thickening until it felt heavy enough to choke the throne room. The playful banter began to morph into something sharper, loaded with lingering glances and words that carried double meanings.
The tipping point arrived on a stormy autumn evening. The castle was quiet, the guards rotating shifts to stay out of the driving rain. You had been summoned to Bridget’s private study under the guise of "evaluating a new comedic routine," though both of you knew Red had been asleep for hours.
When you entered, the room was dimly lit by a roaring fireplace. Bridget had discarded her heavy royal collar and her crown, her long hair falling loose over her shoulders in a way you had never seen before. She looked softer, younger, and utterly dangerous. She was pouring a glass of dark plum wine, her back to you.
"You took your time," Bridget said, her voice dropping an octave in the quiet of the room.
"The corridors are slippery, Your Majesty," you murmured, stepping closer. The bells on your cap gave a tiny, almost apologetic click. "And I wouldn't want to fall into your lap again. Unless, of course, you wanted me to."
Bridget turned slowly, her dark eyes locking onto yours. The usual irritation in her gaze was entirely absent, replaced by a smoldering, predatory focus that made your breath hitch. She set the wine glass down with a soft click.
"You think you are so clever," Bridget whispered, taking a slow step toward you. The distance between you shrank until you could smell the faint scent of roses and expensive wine on her skin. "You think you can play your games, pull your pranks, and see right through me. You think I am weak because I laughed at your foolishness."
"I don't think you're weak at all," you said softly, your usual playful cadence dropping away entirely. You stood your ground as she stepped directly into your personal space, her towering height casting a shadow over you. "I think you're beautiful. Especially when you forget to be cruel."
Bridget’s breath hitched. Her gaze dropped to your lips, her jaw tightening. For a woman who ruled an entire kingdom with an iron fist, she looked utterly paralyzed by the sheer proximity of your mouth. The denial she had built up over months was crumbling, incinerated by the warmth radiating between your bodies.
"You are a plague on my court," she breathed, her voice shaking slightly as her hand rose, her fingers hovering just an inch away from your jawline, trembling with a restraint that was rapidly snapping. "A distraction. An irritation."
"Then punish me," you whispered, tilting your head up, your eyes challenging her.
That was the final thread. Bridget growled, a low, desperate sound, and closed the distance.
Her mouth slammed into yours with a fiercely passionate hunger that took your breath away. It wasn't the kiss of a gentle girl... it was the possessive, commanding take of a woman who had denied herself the only thing she wanted for far too long. Her hands gripped your waist, pinning you flush against her body, her fingers digging into the fabric of your velvet bodice.
You let out a soft gasp against her lips, opening up to her instantly. Bridget took advantage of it, her tongue tangling with yours in a deep, intoxicating rhythm that made your knees turn to water. The heat in the room spiked instantly, the crackle of the fireplace background noise to the rushing of blood in your ears.
Bridget pulled back just an inch, her panting breath hot against your lips, her eyes wild and dark with pure desire. "I should have had you locked away," she murmured against your skin, her lips tracing a path down your jaw to the sensitive skin of your neck. "I should have stopped you months ago."
"But you didn't," you gasped, arching your neck as her teeth nipped gently at your collarbone, sending a fierce jolt of electricity straight down your spine. Your hands found her shoulders, gripping the rich fabric of her gown to keep yourself upright.
"Because I am a fool," Bridget whispered, her hands moving down to grip the backs of your thighs, effortlessly lifting you up.
You wrapped your legs around her waist, clinging to her as she carried you the few steps to the large, velvet chaise lounge near the fire. She pressed you down into the cushions, her heavy body hovering over yours, her gaze drinking in the sight of you flushed, breathless, and entirely hers.
The slow burn of the past few months had ignited into an absolute wildfire, and as Bridget reached down to undo the laces of your bodice, you knew neither of you would ever be the same again.
The morning sun broke through the heavy storm clouds, casting a warm golden light through the stained-glass windows of the study.
In the courtyard below, Maddox stood next to Red, checking their pocket watch with a triumphant smirk.
"It is exactly 7:15 AM," Maddox stated, clicking the watch shut. "The Jester has not returned to her quarters, and the Queen’s morning council has been delayed by two hours."
Red let out a dramatic groan, tossing a heavy pouch of thirty gold coins into Maddox's open hand. "I can't believe she actually lasted until the Solstice. I thought for sure Mom would snap in a few more days"
"Never underestimate a Hatter's ability to drive a woman entirely out of her mind," Maddox said with a fond chuckle, pocketing the gold. "Or a Queen's ability to completely lose her heart."
Thank you so much for requesting this, I genuinely struggled to write due to me being ill, but I'm happy with the end result, lmk If you want a part two, or Headcannons, drabbles, etc <3
