Night before starting a new job jitters. Iām really excited, but afraid I wonāt be able to fall asleep!
So itās good that our friend from Baltimore is about to arrive with his dog Leona after an arduous journey by car and Iāll have a reason to crack open this bottle of champagne in just a bit!
So happy that our Big July is spilling over into August a little and I get to see this pup Iāve been missing š„°

Tuesday was so bonkers (boss made us pack up and bolt about 90 minutes earlier than I planned to leave due to an approaching storm, which did actually bring down trees on the property, so good thinking on her part) that I didnāt get a penultimate day tiled bathroom photo!
But here they are today, day #6 of 6 of my last in office days at my job ever, and even though it was my last day and members of the executive team very much knew this and had attended my going away party, they were still, like, ccāing me on fairly important emails AFTER 5pm! I mean, I did stay until 8:30pm to ensure some things were tucked in a little bit before leaving, so to speak, but I did not take the bait on the new issues/emails. š
Thatās it! I drove straight to WV after leaving for the last time and here I am now at midnight, hoping to fall asleep soon
Day #3 of 6 final in-office days. A very challenging day, honestly. High anxiety, trying not to absorb emotions of people who are not good at regulating their own when stressed.
I wanted to put my hands on my colleagueās shoulders and look them in the eyes and say āyou know what my friend Mollyās grandma always said???? TOUGH TITTY SAID THE KITTY, BUT THE MILK STILL CAME THROUGH!!!!ā
Day #2 of 6 final in-office days at my beloved job. I had a new employee join my team today and I began onboarding her even though I will only be her boss for exactly one week (the person who will take over for me/ultimately be her boss is on vacation this week).
I didnāt even show her the evil renovated bathrooms on her first day, only the three tiled bathrooms! š

#1 of 6 remaining in-office days winding down 13 years of employment in what may well be the best job Iāve ever had, the stress is tremendous trying to wrap things up and hand things off and transition things effectively. But Iāll take photos in my favorite tiled bathrooms till the bitter end!
Our final set of guests in BIG JULY arrived this afternoon (my in-laws and their dog, Benny).
My in-laws havenāt met our MI nephews (the reason we moved here) and very much wanted to, so my sil kindly invited us all up to their house this evening.
I used it as an excuse to make a Twinkie Bundt cake, which had been on my list to try.
I decided to keep it flipped upside down like this instead of turning it back right side upāafter scooping out innards and tunneling through with a melon baller and adding the fillingābecause the dots from adding filling were a helpful visual guide to where to cut if you wanted a piece with the most filling or less filling.
Served it with Neapolitan ice cream, realized I have fallen fall short of my āhey, maybe try baking/making one fun dessert or sweet treat each monthā ideal that I had aspired to. Time to get back in the saddle!
Weāve checked off two Chicago jaunts and two sets of guests in our BIG JULY !
My two brothers and I grew up around the corner from our three cousins on our dadās side. My cousin P and I were both the middle kids between two brothers.
He was identified early on as kind of a dreamer/artsy type (and also a ferocious soccer player who helped his high school team to the state championships).
When I, a few years younger, was deemed to be cut from the same cloth (except for the soccer talent), our dads would jokingly call me āPās-name-citaā which I took as a high compliment.
Now heās a beloved teacher and accomplished musician who started a massive funk music festival in WV thatās now in its 10th year. His wife is also a teacher and and their wonderful 18 year old daughter is getting ready to enter college majoring in fine art, and I am so happy that she is now the āHer-dadās-name-citaā of the family.
We spent a day at my brotherās lake swimming and playing with the kids, then my brother and sil got a babysitter and we all went out to Bellās Brewery to see a WV musician whom P & I have both seen before in WV and whose tour just happened to be coming through Kalamazoo at the right time.
Then today I took them to Saugatuck for the day and we walked around and had lunch downtown before going to Oval Beach for the afternoon.
I sent the three of them on their way afterwards to have a little family vacation doing more Lake Michigan beach town stuff in Holland.
I still have to get to Holland for a beach day this summer, but itās hard to beat the beach in Saugatuck!
Yāall, Andy accepted a dog boarding request for a week in August and yesterday Callie and her owner came over for a test visit to make sure she feels comfortable and the cats are also okay with her.
It was a success! Well, Debra raised her hackles and ran away but thatās fine, Callie had no interest in pursuing her. Shelby was fine.
She is a rescued beagle from a research facility in southwest Michigan that used beagles in pesticide tests (they stopped doing this in 2019). She has a āUSDAā tattoo. She was born at the lab.
She is such a tiny little lady! She is so calm and sweet! I cannot wait to have her with us and cuddle and walk and spoil her! She had a grand time sniffing her way all around our backyard.
ETA: this is an article about the release of the beagles from the facility: https://www.humaneworld.org/en/blog/breaking-beagles-freed-pesticide
The beagles who were undergoing pesticide testing at a Michigan lab have been released to the care of the Michigan Humane Society, where the
After last nightās train issues prompted an extra nightās stay in Chicago, I was out the door at 5:30 am to get on the first train back to MI.
ā¦and as soon as we boarded the conductor came through and was like, so sorry folks, weāve got at least an hour delay due to an accident on the tracks ahead. š

Hahahaha the moment my presentation ended this afternoon I hoofed it 1.2 miles in 90 degree weather at rush hour while wearing a full skirt suit and high heels and my luggage on my back like a gap year kid on their European tour and my computer backpack threaded through my forearm and boarded my 4:50pm train home and sat there until 5:30 when they made us get off again and at 6:30pm I decided to dig other shoes out of my luggage and hoof it another 1.5 miles with all my shit back to the hotel we were at two days ago and thank god I did because they werenāt about to get me home in any way, shape, or form this eveningš
After the Cubs game last Wednesday, we drove everyone back to our house and then
1. Went to the beach in St Joseph
2. Visited Meijer Gardens and saw the Chihuly exhibit
3. Went out to dinner and the park in downtown Kzoo
4. Spent the 4th at my brotherās lake swimming and floating
5. Brought everyone back to Chicago to fly home Sunday
In the mornings Hazel and I would be first ones up so weād make a āsurpriseā for everyone for breakfast each morning (muffins, coffee cake, etc) and she took great delight in distracting members of the family as they woke up and wandered in so they wouldnāt know what we were making, then serving it to them with a flourish warm from the oven. š
Coming up for air for a moment to say that we were at the Cubs game on Wednesday where they won 23-3, and since it was my first time at Wrigley Field (and Hazelās first time that she could rememberā¦she was taken there as a baby) we both got our official first timers certificate and button, which was more exciting for me than it should have been.
The heat index was 102 and our seats were in the sun until the 7th inning. Normally, Iād rather die than subject myself to such conditions. It was murderous.
But my lifelong Cubs fan brother-in-lawās delight was infectious (he has never attended a game where they won) and our nieces were such troupers that I found a hidden reserve of fortitude that I didnāt know existed and pushed through and let myself be carried along with the wave.
We have three separate sets of house guests (all related to us) in July:
1. First guests: 4 ppl (Andyās sister, our bil, Hazel and Tabby)
2. Second guests: 3 ppl (my cousin, his wife, and their delightful 18-year-old daughter)
3. Third guests: 2 ppl plus a dog (Andyās parents and their rescue pup, Benny).
Plus *two* quick jaunts to Chicago for part work/part fun, plus I come back to Bmore for my final in-office week ever (a split week with a WV weekend in the middle)
And then I start my new job the first Monday of August!
I am very glad that after this work week in Bmore I have my annual camping trip/friend reunion in WV this weekend to center myself and build up a well of fortitude inside me to handle all the craziness.

I got this ankle length dress (it is *supposed* to be a dress) during my last circuit of my favorite WV thrift stores, and since to me it reads like a total nightgown, Iām using it as my new summer nightgown and looooooooving it.
Samantha Irby listed her favorite Kalamazoo restaurants (well one is in Mattawan and one is in my brotherās neck of the woods) in her latest newsletter and they are all places I like and now we can never go to any other restaurants until I have a Sam Irby sighting!
