Owl House Re-Watch

Here we go with Season 1 Episode 11: Sense and Insensitivity.

The episode starts at Eda's stand where she is attempting to sell human artifacts. However, she realizes that people are distracted and Luz sees that there is a book fair going on! At the end of the aisle of books and stands, Luz sees that there is a writing competition. She states that she has always dreamed to become a writer because it is impossible to be a witch in the human realm. We get to see cute young Luz finding her angle for her About the Author photo.

King realizes that the authors are treated like GODS amongst their fans. He wants a taste of that so he agrees to team up with Luz to write a book with her.

As Eda wanders around, she notices Lilith at the Book Fair. Lilith is communicating with a vendor who is showing her a map to the Bloom of Eternal Youth. She is temporarily holding off on finding Eda to bring this to the Emperor to gain his favor. She is traveling with Steve, an Emperor's coven scout, who we will see more of as the series progresses.

Eda goes to the vendor to get a map to beat Lilith to the Bloom. We can see that he has many of the same map that he gave to Lilith - so another fucking scammer like Luz.

Meanwhile, Luz and King are brainstorming together to create their story. They talk about plot lines and characters. Luz, of course, wants a story with romance and magic while King wants a story about violence and a powerful ruler. King mocks the romance and Luz is a shipper at heart who defends the romance in the story.

Eda calls Luz to let her know she will be gone for a couple days. While she is out of the room, King trashes her novel and writes his own story which he calls "Ruler's Reach". Luz decides to leave King as a writing buddy since he won't listen to her ideas.

King is looking for someone to read his story and the lizard guy, Pinet, from the writing competition shows up. He LOVES King story and gets him to sign a contract with his publishing firm. King can write an entire novel, but fails to read his contract. We see everyone is OBSESSED with King's book and obsessed with King.

He attempts to invite Luz to his Meet the Author event, but she tosses the invitation to the floor. After he leaves, she picks it up and contemplates going to support King.

Meanwhile, Eda is in the forest of the Boiling Isles on her quest. She hears someone coming and uses a fireball to attack them with the battle cry "spicy toss!".

It is revealed to be Lilith. Eda and Lilith are now in a race to see who can get to the Bloom of Eternal Youth first. While running, Lilith gets captured by a monster but Eda helps her get free. They find the Bloom and Eda takes it first, but then the scammer arrives to ruin the moment.

At the library, King is enjoying his event, but Pinet says he needs the sequel. King presents what he has written but Pinet basically calls it garbage. King speculates that he can only write when he is going against Luz's ideas. He sees her in the crowd and tells her that he needs her help to write some "romantic slop" so he can write another masterpiece. Luz, now angry, leaves King alone. Pinet witnesses all of this so he gets his guards to kidnap Luz. He puts Luz in a shrinking box with King and tells them that they need some "crunch time" to write a novel. He shows his collection of other authors who couldn't meet their deadlines and are now cubes.

The Bloom of Eternal Youth scammer thinks he has bested the Clawthorne sisters but they are not scared of this punk. They fucking wreck his shit. It doesn't fix anything between the two sisters, but Lilith does let Eda go. She tries to get her to join the Emperor's coven so the Emperor can heal her curse, but Eda says she doesn't want to feel like she owes the Emperor anything.

Luz and King use Luz's finished story to trick Pinet. Luz finally uses her light glyph again which causes the paper to catch on fire (a continuity error?). King uses his scarf to capture Pinet and they tear up King's contract. They get trapped at the door by Pinet's guards and can't escape. Luckily, the little white triangle breaks down the door because she wants King to read her "stowy". Pinet decides to read it, and is so moved, that he makes her the new pretentious author everyone is obsessed with.

***********************SPOILER ALERT*********************************

This is the first mention we get of Steve in the Emperor's Coven. At this point in time, he is "RA RA EMPEROR" cheerleader. I love that Dana showed even background characters either in the Emperor's delusion or growth through the cult hive mind like Steve. I hope in the graphic novel we see that he and Mattholomule are siblings (my favorite headcannon).

Hunter's Penstagram handle name is "RULERZREACHF4N", I wonder if he got to go to the Meet the Author event, but probable not because he didn't connect Luz's "rat" to his favorite author. He might've had to find a used copy that he read in secret away from Belos.

This is the first instance that we hear "spicy toss" as it is used as a battle cry with fire. I love that Luz uses it in her battle against Belos the most because he's a hater and it shows that Luz has joy when it comes to her magic powers. I wonder in Eda's Wild Magic school if they are taught "battle moves" or defensive magic.

We have officially reached the halfway mark of Season 1!!! Woo Hoo! So here is Season 1 Episode 10: Escape of the Palisman. The Palisman lore is one of the coolest parts of the Owl House to me and so I love this episode a lot.

We start the episode with King attempting to rule over the young children on the playground. The kids are not taking him serious and this snot-nosed child PUSHES King down the slide! King goes to tell Eda and Eda says it is not serious, but then hear comes the snot-nosed kid AGAIN and "tags" King but pushes him down. King rises up and does his "squeal of rage" as Eda calls it.

Luz is asking questions about Owlbert and Eda reveals that she carved Owlbert from a Palisman tree. She talks about Owlbert's unique interlock, which is on his foot and allows him to connect to Eda's staff and that he will only connect to her staff. While talking with Luz, Eda faints and she is experiencing the Owl Beast space. When Eda comes to from the trance, Luz asks her if she knows how she got the curse and Eda isn't sure where the curse came from, who cursed her, why they did, and how they did it.

Luz heads to Hexside to go to the Grudgby game between Glandus High and Hexsie. However, when she gets there, she realizes that she is in Glandus colors. She goes to the lost and found to find some Hexside merch. When she comes back outside, the bus taking the students to Glandus has already left. Gus wanted to leave Luz, but Willow made sure they stayed back with Luz. Willow says that they can't walk to Glandus and her parents aren't home to fly them on their staffs. Luz decides to ask Eda if she can borrow her staff to fly her and her friends to Glandus.

At the Owl House, Eda has transformed into a partial Owl Beast that listens to King's commands. He decides to use her to take back his rule at the playground. However, when Luz comes to ask Eda to borrow her staff, King makes it seem like Eda is asleep and that she wouldn't mind Luz borrowing Owlbert. So, Luz takes Owlbert to head to Glandus and King takes Owl Eda to go to the playground.

While flying on Owlbert, Luz is going too fast and crashes into many trees. Owlbert has a little crack in his head ((ﾉಥДಥ)ﾉ ︵┻━┻･/). Owlbert removes himself from the staff and flies into the woods away from Luz. The kids follow Owlbert into the forest and make it into the Bat Queen's nest and the Bat Queen is PISSED! She psychically connects with Owlbert and states that Luz hurt him. The Bat Queen decides that Luz has to go through trials, without the help of her friends, to win back Owlbert's trust.

Meanwhile, King has taken back control of the playground by scaring the kids with Owl Eda. Most of the kids run away crying and someone's parent snitches to animal control about a beast on the playground. After achieving his goal, Eda begins to eat parts of the playground. King tries to get her to stop, but she is no longer listening to him. He throws the elixir he brought into her mouth to get her to change, but Eda does not transform back (yikes!). And of coursssssse, it is the previous demon hunters, who are now Animal Control. They capture Owl Eda and when King tries to run after her, he gets caught in the rope ladder. Who decides to show up with the most cryptic ass speech:

This evil ass child who acted all sweet and discerning, but is ALL the tyrannical as King. King almost stays back to deal with this kid, but goes after Owl Eda. When he gets in the truck, Owl Eda isn't listening to him anymore, but he attempts to get to her subconscious by doing his "rage squeal". This gets Eda to laugh and she turns back into herself. She gets King and her out of the Animal Control van and they go back to the Owl House.

Luz has finished the three trials that the Bat Queen had her do (milking a spider demon, getting rid of a bee's nest, and giving her babies a bath). Luz is completing all of these trials with NO GLYPH MAGIC. At this point all she has is the light glyph but still! All the while, she is apologizing to Owlbert about how bad she feels. Owlbert shows that he has forgiven Luz and attempts to go to her, but the Bat Queen ties him up and says that for Luz's last trial she will have to fight the Bat Queen (again with no fucking magic?!).

Luz holds back the Bat Queen with Eda's staff and notices that the Bat Queen also has an interlock on her foot. Luz realizes that the Bat Queen was a palisman as well. The Bat Queen reveals that she was "a staff made for a giant but I was broken and discarded". She shows that she protects all the broken and discarded palisman and we see a forest full of palisman with splits or missing parts. The Bat Queen also says that she hasn't had an owner for thousands of years which makes you think of who her owner could have been? Owlbert connects with the Bat Queen and convinces her that he loves Luz and he wants to go with her. They are released from the Bat Queen's lair and they go back to the Owl House.

At the Owl House, Luz gives Owlbert a band-aid and says that he joins the "boo boo buddy club". When Eda walks in, Owlbert communicates with her. Apparently he tells her that him and Luz went to go get ice cream which Eda doesn't believe. However, this shows that Eda can communicate with her palisman. Eda realizes that her elixirs are not strong enough to counteract the symptoms of the curse.

****************************SPOILER ALERT****************************

Since we have met the Bat Queen, she has been given the title of Demon, but she is revealed to be a palisman. I wonder, if similar to King, they give the title of demon to any creature that they can't understand. Also with the Bat Queen, it seems like the most likely person to have been her owner when she was a palisman was the Titan since it is his magic that controls the isles. But what if it was one of the Archivist or the Collector themselves who used a staff for a little bit before throwing it away or being captured by the Titan.

Already, we are being hearing these cute noises coming from King which allude to his Titan-ness. Later in season 2, he gets the "WEH" magic yell. I wonder if this is what a baby Titan roar sounds like.

Finally, I don't know who was the first to coin this theory so I hate that I can't source them, but there is a theory in the fandom that the reason Hunter can communicate with Flapjack is because Grimwalkers are made of Palistrom wood. We see the instructions on how to make one in season 2 and it lists that wood. Which also makes sense why the forest is getting smaller. However, in this episode Eda talks with Owlbert? Could this be because she shaped Owlbert herself with the Palistrom wood because that's what her family does? So Hunter will fit in with the other Clawthornes when he works in the Palistrom woods later in life or is he still seen as an anomaly? What if the Owl Beast was also a palisman like the Bat Queen who is now bonded to Eda so she can communicate with Palisman like Hunter?

Here we go with Season 1 Episode 9: Something Ventured, Someone Framed.

The episode starts with Gus showing off his human artifacts (even if some are not correctly labeled as what they should be).

We finally get to see Gus as the President of the Human Appreciation Society (HAS) which has three other members, plus a new member.

This new member introduces himself as Mattholomule. He tries to take control of the HAS so that he can be president. He pushes Gus' artifacts out of the way and shows his fake human artifacts. When Gus calls into question his artifacts, Mattholomule states that Gus can't prove it. Gus decides to call on Luz to be his human expert to verify Mattholomule's artifacts.

At the Owl House, Gus asks Luz to help him, but she states that she can't go because she is still banned from Hexside. When they pan to Luz's banned poster, it looks like either Eda or Luz (I hope that it was Eda), taped the banned poster on Eda's huge wanted poster. Eda thinks it is a good thing to be banned, but Luz tells her that at least at Hexside she could learn some magic. Eda leaves the house upset about Hexside. Gus lies to Luz and tells her that he got her ban temporarily lifted so she can come to Hexside.

When Luz arrives at Hexside, Gus puts a cowl over her head so that she is hidden by Bump and other professors, but he tells her it's for the flair of her reveal at the HAS. Willow is disappointed in Gus for lying.

Gus takes Luz with him into the school and we see some kids causing trouble, which attracts the Trouble Sniffers that showed up after Luz's time at Hexside. Gus bumps into Mattholomule and drops all the banned Luz posters out of his bag. When Mattholomule sees that Luz is the real deal, he starts to panic that he will be caught in a lie, but he finds one of the banned posters.

Meanwhile, Eda comes to Hexside to convince Bump to take Luz in as an exchange student. Bump agrees as long as Eda fixes the mistakes in her past at Hexside. He shows her her permanent record and this is the first time we see Eda's full name: Edalyn Clawthorne. She makes a comment about how she "thought there'd be more".

To avoid being caught by the Trouble Sniffers, Gus takes Luz on a tour of the school. We see the Grudgby Pitch, the Plant Homeroom, and the Illusion Homeroom. Luz notices another Gus that turns out to be an illusion Gus made to take notes for him in class. Gus has to be very powerful to keep that up for an entire day. Gus states that he moved up some grade levels.

Eda starts by cleaning up some of her magic graffiti off the lockers. When she really chases the graffiti, it changes to say "Mother, NOOOOOO" which is iconic.

At the HAS, before Luz can verify the artifacts, Mattholomule states that he just wanted to be liked and that's why he made up these artifacts. A truce seems to be formed between Gus and Mattholomule. However, when the other members leave, and it is just Gus, Mattholoume, and Luz, he calls in the Trouble Sniffers to take Luz to detention. Luz is confused because she thought the ban was lifted, but Gus can't tell her that. Mattholomule tells Gus that he only craves "power or drama". Gus pulls on the bell's tongue to get him and Mattholomule in detention to save Luz.

Luz and Gus devise a plan to get out of detention. Gus uses illusions of him and Luz to distract the snake like creatures that put student's into a pod.

They break down the door to get out of detention - right when Bump was just assuring Eda that Luz could attend Hexside. Bump rescinds Luz's acceptance, but Gus takes on her punishment as his own. He loses the presidency of HAS to Mattholomule anyway. Luz is now officially a student at Hexside!

*************************SPOILER ALERT******************************

In season 2, we get a call back to the line of Eda looking at her permanent record and saying "I'd thought there'd be more". I neveer realized that she did this twice in the series lol.

Mattholomule states that he loves power, so when we see him in Season 3, I love that he is trying to be in control of the student population. However, unlike his stint in the HAS, during the season 3 story, Mattholomule actually shows leadership skills and good ideas to maintain the society of students.

Gus as the Human Appreciation Society president and then, later in his life, he will be a professor in Eda's School of Wild Magic with a course on Humans. There is also a Human Exchange Program going on in the Boiling Isles. I wonder if Gus started that and Vee got to bring Masha into the Boiling Isles.

Dana posted on her Instagram some pages from The Long Lived King (I think lol). The pictures include King and the Collector, Luz looking for King, the Palisman forest, Darius as a leader, and Eda.

For the King and Collector moment, I hope it’s from the gap in season 3 where we don’t get to see the events in Bonesborough to explain King and the Collector’s friendship. 💫

I love the Palisman and so I’m excited that we get to see where they live and the Bat Queen’s connection 🦇

What is Darius up to?! Love that he may semi be in charge and I wonder if him and Alador will have become closer since the season 3 finale.

I can’t wait to see what Dana has come up with in this graphic novel. Obligatory fuck Disney for ending this series 🖕🏾

Another fun episode (when we thought we had so much more time on our hands), this is Season 1 Episode 8: Once Upon a Swap. Based on the title, you can tell that we are going to be doing a body swap with our main characters.

The episode starts with Luz using her light glyph to make the sign for Eda's storefront light up. The only problem is that it contains Eda's name which is just gonna draw attention to her. Some Hexside students (Boscha, Skara, and a skater looking boy) come up to Luz and make fun of the stand. The teens treat King like a cute pet which upsets him. Finally, they make fun of Eda by calling her old. Our main characters reflect on each of their lives being more difficult than one another. They decide to wager a bet that whoever can't last as another will have to clean the Owl House which includes cleaning Hooty.

Eda uses her magic to have all the characters body swap

We start with Eda as King. Eda King is strutting her stuff around town in King's little body. At first, you think that she is gonna get snatched up by the Coven scout, but he just thinks that she is so cute.

Eda King does, however, get stopped by two old women who take her to a kitty cafe. Eda thinks this is the best situation to be in and is lounging in the cafe. Another cute animal tries to warn her of the reality of the two old women, but Eda King does not want to hear it. When the old ladies want Eda King to put on a cute costume, she refuses and tries to leave, but they have trapped Eda King in the cafe (and put the bee costume on her). The other cute animals seem to be in a stupor and have lost their sense of self.

Over to King:

King has found where the teen hang out is and infiltrates it to become their new leader. He shows off some skills with their flying sneakers and some of the teens begin to follow King Luz and wreak havoc around town. Boscha, upset that she has been dethroned by King Luz, challenges King Luz to a race to see who will be the leader of the teens. At first, King Luz's worm does not want to race, but soon he is in the lead. However, the track is not complete and King Luz falls onto the teen's hideaway. This angers them and they chase King Luz until he ends up in the kitty cafe with Eda.

To Luz Eda's story:

Luz Eda, not realizing how powerful Eda's magic is, keeps blasting magic everywhere in Bonesborough. She decides to wear some oven mitts with the fingertip cut out so she can control the amount of magic. Luz Eda uses her lit up sign to lure in customers and she is doing surprisingly well with how much snails she has gotten. However, an Emperor Coven scout comes to the stall and arrests Luz Eda.

Who walks in to interrogate Luz Eda - none other than Lilith. Lilith believes she is talking to Eda so she discloses facts about Eda's life, such as her wanting to join the Emperor's Coven with Lilith when they were younger. Luz Eda tries to leave, but Lilith decides that they should take Luz Eda in and brand her with an Emperor's coven sigil (!!!). Luz Eda uses powerful magic again and blows up the jail that she was in. She runs into town and sees King Luz and Eda King in the kitty cafe. When she goes inside, they talk about learning lessons and Eda switches them back to their own bodies. Eda causes everyone around them (the teens chasing Luz, the guards chasing Eda, and the two old women holding King) to switch bodies as our trio makes their escape.

************************SPOILER WARNING*****************************

First a grievance to get off my chest: this episode doesn't have major plot points (besides the sigil which we will get to) that furthers the story in a meaningful way. However, it was a way to learn more about each of the characters, spend time in this new world, and have fun. Due to Disney being cowards because of the LGBTQ+ story lines and characters, we will never know what a complete 20+ episode arc for season 3 could have been. We didn't get time to explore the Grimwalker storyline, learn more about Caleb, explore Willow and Gus' home lives, or expound on the Collector and their backstory.

Summerween resumes with Season 1 Episode 7 of The Owl House - Lost in Language. We get to see one of Dana's self insert characters (the tiny triangle). This episode we get to learn a little bit more about Amity and a little bit more about the Boiling Isles.

The episode begins with Luz reading Azura to King. The passage that she reads states that Azura has the power to befriend anyone which is very similar to Luz during her time on the Boiling Isles (we will discuss this point later). Hooty opens the door to a package for Eda. It is one of the Bat Queen's children asleep in a bassinet asking Eda to babysit. At first Eda refuses to babysit until she hears that she will be rewarded. However, when they take the blanket off the baby, they begin to scream. Luz heads to the library to avoid helping with the baby. When she gets to the library we get to see some cute references like a Wicked Witch of the West poster and a person watching cat videos in the crystal ball.

Luz hears Amity's voice and sees Amity reading to kids in the library. It looks like she is mostly reading to kindergarteners and one of them is named Braxes and I adore his deep voice.

She hides behind the manga section in the library but Amity finds her. She gets upset with Luz being there and Luz decides to leave. As she leaves the kid section, she bumps into Amity's older siblings, Edric and Emira. As Edric talks to her, you see Luz blush a little during their chat. Both seem to be in the illusion track at school.

They call Amity Mittens and tell Amity that Luz is too cool for her. They start to pull pranks in the library. They mess with the one of the librarians, Gary, until he has a mental breakdown and cries. They are finally kicked out of the library. Edric and Emira plan to come back to the library after hours to see the magic from the Wailing Star. They invite Luz to join. Luz comments that Amity is already really mad at her and Edric shows Amity's true mad face.

Back at home, Eda and King are struggling with getting the Bat Queen's kid to stop crying. Finally, Eda picks it up and starts to rock it which stops the wailing. When Luz arrives, she tells them her plan to get Amity to become her friend by becoming friends with her siblings. Luz admires the work that Eda has done with the Bat Queen baby and touches it, which causes it to barf up their two other siblings and start flying around wreaking havoc in the Owl House. Luz leaves once again back to the library.

When Luz arrives back at the library, she does some embarrassing poses to seem cool in front of the teens, but they are already there watching her. They are wearing some CUTE outfits. When they go into the library, the Wailing Star can be seen in the stained glass window. It causes all the books to come to life in the library having thing comes out of it. Luz opens a magazine and gets a very Cloud-like outfit.

Back at the Owl House, Eda makes apple slices and reads the Otabin story to the Bat Queen's kids and King. Luz is looking at the story in the library too. Edric and Emira come in and show her something they just discovered - if you draw in the books, the new drawing will come to life as well with the spell. Edric convinces and helps Luz draw in Otabin's book, but she doesn't want to see the creature that would come out. However, when they run to their next stop, Luz drops the book and it lands open to let out the new Otabin.

Edric and Emira take Luz to the romance section which holds a secret hideout. This is Amity's hideout. They want to find her diary in her hideout to make fun of her since she got them in trouble at home. Luz doesn't think that's a good idea. However, she notices that Amity also reads Azura books and accidentally finds her diary amongst these books. In most of the diary entries, Amity is talking about Luz. The twins discover that Luz has found the diary and takes it away from her. They all fight over it and it falls open on the ground. WUH-OH Amity walks into her clubhouse.

She gets mad at Luz and calls her a bully?! I don't know about that Amity. Like this was fucked up for Luz to be a part of the twin's plot to embarrass Amity over her journal, but A) it wasn't Luz's idea and B) Amity has tried to get Luz dissected, publicly called Willow half-a-witch in school and attempted to get her expelled, and purposely chose to not invite her to a party (there may be parental reasons for that, but way to call the kettle black Amity).

Edric and Emira want to continue their night of shenanigans with Luz, but she decides to go after Amity and apologize. Emira calls her "cutie" and Luz blushes (which is one of the first indications that Luz is bisexual - others include her calling Eda "foxy" and her love for Nevareth). When Luz reaches up to Amity, Otabin has come out of the book and attached the book to himself so he can't be erased. He takes Amity and Luz has to figure out how to save her.

Luz uses some paper to aid in her ability to rescue Amity. Meanwhile, Otabin is using thread to turn Amity into a book character and making her 2-D.

Luz enters in as Luzura and, when we can see what she is writing, she included an image of Amity being impressed by her (which is adorable). However, Otabin captures Luz, closes the diary which takes away all her cool witch stuff, and begins to weave her into the book as well. Luz uses the momentum of the book falling over to run away from Otabin. When Amity asks her for the rest of the plan, Luz says all she thought of was running and yelling. This causes Amity to laugh with Luz. Then, Otabin pulls them back. Amity holds onto a ladder in the library which causes the book to split and Luz to still be captured in Otabin's claws. Now it is time for Amity to save Luz! She uses a book cart to push into Otabin which causes a book shelf to land on him and Luz is able to escape. However, he gets up and holds Luz closer to him. Amity writes that Luz needs to fix her mistake and a large eraser falls to Amity which Luz uses to erase what was written over Otabin. He turns back into his small self and feels remorse for what he did ((╥_╥)) but Amity assures him that they are still friends.

After that long night, Luz gives Amity one of her Azura books, in hopes that they can be friends too. Amity says that it is a start to something. When Luz returns to the Owl House, the Bat Queen arrives to give Eda a chest full of snails and a whistle to call on a favor from the Bat Queen whenever.

Now, I had a lot of criticism for Amity, but I do love her character. She is definitely for the people who grew up in a toxic environment who had to prove themselves and were criticized for being who they really are. Edric and Emira are being annoying siblings, but they are causing Amity pain because she made them look bad in front of their mom (who suuuuuuuucks). We learn more about Amity's backstory and the difficulties she has to deal with. However, I have to be on Amity's neck because she is so cruel to two girls of color (Willow and Luz). Luckily, in Bonesbourough, it seems like racism doesn't exist, but I grew up with a "friend" who I thought was truly my friend but she would constantly say I wasn't pretty like her, I wasn't smart, and thought my job aspirations were at the level of being a stripper (which isn't a dig at those in that profession, but I was interested in history and writing so it wasn't even remotely close). Then to find out, her family never liked me because I was Black and so all these microaggressions she had towards me were because of her family, but I was still hurt in the process.

In later seasons, we start to see the Blight siblings begin to get closer as they realize how evil their mom is. They start to have personalities besides just trying to be the best or one-up one another.

The Owl House Season 1 Episode 6 is titled Hooty's Moving Hassle. Now, I loVE a Hooty-centric episode. Season 2 has probably one of my favorite Hooty episodes but we shall get there soon.

The episode opens up with Eda being obsessed with a game called Hexes Hold Them. She is playing against Owlbert. However, she starts to slowly transform into the Owl Beast. When she goes to the market to get her elixir, Morton says that he is fresh out and that Eda should go find some guy named Grim Hammer at the Night Market. Even when she is dealing with not getting her elixir, she is still playing Hexes Hold Them. While at the market, Luz sees some demon hunters who go around the Boiling Isles finding demons to hunt and sell. Willow runs up to Luz upset that she wasn't invited to Amity's moonlight conjuring and how she has always wanted to do one. Luz goes to ask Eda but Eda says no because she will be out of the house. However, when Gus and Willow ask Luz what Eda said, she lies so that they can do the moonlight conjuring and shove it in the mean girls faces. Eda is leaving for the Night Market and warns Luz again to not have people over. We get our first "byeeeeeeee" farewell in the Owl House. When she leaves, Gus gets rid of the bush illusion that he cast over himself and Willow. They are in new clothes which is super cute! They go in and decide to use an action figure to bring to life. As Willow and Gus chant the moonlight magic spell, Luz is just mumbling along to the beat of the chant. They think that they were unsuccessful, but then Hooty starts moving and they realize that they magicked Hooty! They use this magic to pull some pranks on people around the Boiling Isles, but it catches the attention of the demon hunters from before.

When Eda gets to the Night Market, she meets the worst person ever - Tibbles Tibblet Grim Hammer the Third (who goes by Tibbles). He is charging WAY extra for the elixir than what Eda usually pays for it. She notices some Hexes Hold Them cards and tries to play to win the elixir. However, Tibbles is a SHARK and hussles Eda out of getting her elixir, he takes King to wear his outfits, and he is going to call the Emperor's Coven on Eda. Tibble quote: "What kind of game are you playing? Capitalism. Where everyone wins except you"

Back with Willow, Luz, and Gus, the Owl House is captured by the demon hunters. We learn through backstory that Amity and Willow used to be friends before Amity dumped her because Amity's powers came in before Willow's. Luz tells Willow that next to Eda, Willow is the most powerful witch that she has met (FACTS!). The demon hunters remove the kids from the Owl House and some crazed dude pushes them over the cliff.

Willow uses her plant magic to fight the demon hunters and get them back to Hooty to put him back into place. Meanwhile, Eda apologizes to King for her obsession over Hexes Hold Them. When Hooty walks through the Night Market and destroys Tibbles tent, King throws Eda the elixir, she gets her power back and she is free. When Eda returns to the house, she yells at the kids and gets them to clean the house, but also tells them that she would like to join next year for their moonlight conjuring. Eda reflects that they are powerful witches if they could animate the whole Owl House. We see the mean girls at Amity's house couldn't animate anything, but they do see Willow, Luz, and Gus all over Penstagram with their animated house. We get the first wide shot "WHAT" yelled about a Penstagram photo.

Hopefully, no one who hasn't watched the entire show has left before we get into this spoiler section. This one will be light since there isn't much to reflect on future events in this episode.

We see Amity's Penstagram account is Witchchick128. I think we see a few more like Eda's, Willow's, and Hunter's throughout the series.

Interesting that I never noticed that they use both "Crow phones" to call people but also have the scroll as their social media.

Once again, Amity is a BIG bully. She says that Willow was "born without talent" so I also would be shocked as Willow to see Amity start to become more part of their friend group when her and Luz start to get close.

**Author's note! Sorry that I have been MIA! Had to go into surgery, but I am all better now and ready to continue my Summerween activities!

Here we go with The Owl House Season 1 Episode 5 title Covention (great title ＼（Ｔ∇Ｔ）／). This episode gives us more of a background into the society of the Bonesbourough and how witches are separated into different covens.

The episode starts with Luz reading to King from her Azura book. We see Azura challenge Hecate to a Witch's Duel in the book. Eda is tired of hearing Luz read from her book and tries to get her to work, but there isn't anyone around to do work. Willow and Gus show up and tell Luz that today is the witch's covention. Eda doesn't want to go becasue she says joining a coven causes you to lose access to your other forms of magic. She hasn't been to a covention since her and "someone else" were girls. Luz uses her book to annoy Eda into taking her to the covention. While at the covention, we learn that not joining a coven and being a "wild witch" can mean jail time. In the covention hall, we learn that there are nine main covens that you can join.

These include the Potions coven, the Abomination coven, the Plant coven, the Healing coven, the construction coven, the Beast coven, the Illusion coven, the Bard coven, and the Oracle coven. Based on the students we have seen, we can guess some of the tracks that they are interested in. Boscha wears yellow so she is in the Potion track, Skara wears Red so she's in the Bard track. We know Amity is skilled as an abomination witch and her colors match for this track, Willow got to change to the Plant track in I'm a Teenage Abomination, and Gus shows off his illusion skills during the covention. However, Eda shows Luz that when you get your sigil on your wrist, the rest of your magic gets sealed off and you can only practice your chosen track (MORE ON THIS LATER). Meanwhile, King is going around the covention getting "offerings" (pens, shirts, totes, etc.). Then we meet the Emperor's Coven.

The Emperor's coven is the only coven in which you get to keep all your magic. However, you then work under the Emperor. This includes all those scouts that have been hunting Eda in these first 5 episodes. Again, this was prior to all the shit going down now, but this coven is very much giving ICE vibes with how they terrorize the "wild magic" community for not conforming to the Emperor's ways. Lilith even states that they are used to "enforce the Emperor's will". In the Emperor's coven, is Lilith Clawthorne, Eda's sister. While Luz is walking around the covention, she bumps into Amity. After Amity steps on King's cupcake, Luz challenges her to a witch's duel. If Luz wins, Amity must apologize to King and admit that humans can become witches, but if Amity wins, then Luz has to stop training to become a witch. They shake with an everlasting oath. We go back to Eda and Lilith. Lilith is worried about Eda because Lilith is in charge of training Emperor coven cadets and Eda is struggling to mentor Luz (more on this). They decide to bet on Luz and Amity's bet. However, Eda realizes that she hasn't taught Luz any magic besides the light spell. Eda decides to help Luz win by setting up booby traps in the arena. Amity is suspicious of Luz's magic and is able to call Luz out as a cheater. When she walks away, a power glyph from the construction coven is found on Amity's neck which grants the witch wearing it with amazing strength. So both Lilith and Eda cheated and Lilith attacks Eda for making fun of her. Now commences the REAL witch's duel. They both get good jabs at one another, but Lilith hits Eda hard. Eda causes a diversion to get away from Lilith. Amity releases Luz from their oath and is impressed with Luz's magical abilities (albeit she made fun of her and said a child could do those spells). Towards the end of the episode, we get a glimpse of a new character in Lilith's makeup compact communicator who is a close second for the Emperor (Kikimora). We also learn that Lilith has made some sort of deal with the Emperor.

If the coven system wasn't corrupt: what coven would you like to be part of? I think a good one, that will still allow the most access to different types of magic, would be the potions coven. You can create different potions to do your bidding which expands the type of magic you have at your disposal. If I was going with what I am truly interested in, I would have to be the plant coven. I would want to be like Willow, Lila (Sky High), and Poison Ivy as a witch on the Boiling Isles.

This gets into BIG spoilers for the end of season 2 stuff, so hopefully there is enough of a buffer between this sentence and my coven question that anyone who is following along for the first time will not be spoiled by what I am about to rant about.

So, already in season 1, we learn the about the terrible coven system and how it restricts your ability to do any other forms of magic. This goes into Belos' fear of, what he calls, wild witches. They have access to all of their magic (aka knowledge and skill) which is a direct threat to him as this new dictator. Then he jails any witches who are not following this corrupt coven system that he created to only benefit himself. THEN, it turns out that this coven system, is used to resurrect the Collector and open a portal into the human realm. So, not only is this man robbing witches of all their potential to create magic, but THEN he is using this connection to effectively kill them as well because at the end of the day all he is a LOSER WITCH HUNTER!

The Emperor coven's symbol resembles the Gravesfield symbol (which is the original Golden Guard symbol). The one difference is that a sword seems to be going through the bird from the Gravesfield symbol and flying above it (!!!!). I wonder if this was just a cool design for subtle foreshadowing from Dana that Belos had killed someone. I wonder if Caleb played a significant role in Gravesfield (besides being part of the brother duo who went missing) because why give the symbol of your home to the Grimwalker unless Caleb used it as well. Also, poinignant, that it seems like Caleb's symbol is a bird and all the Clawthornes are shown to have bird symbolism in their family (Eda = owl, Lilith = raven, Gwendolyn = hawk, Dell = yellow cardinal). And isn't it just so crazy that two separate Clawthornes brought humans over to the Demon Realm.

The Owl House Season 1 Episode 4 is titled The Intruder. This episode is a haunted house/scary movie with the threat of a monster hunting Luz and King.

Episode Summary:

King is attempting to teach Luz about his kind, demons. Luz is somewhat paying attention but is getting distracted by her phone and the rain. When she goes outside, she realizes that rain on the Boiling Isles is boiling rain. Eda casts a protection spell on the house and Luz talks about wanting to be as cool as Eda ("surprisingly foxy for her age"). When Eda comes inside, she wants to relax, but Luz pushes her to teach her a spell. Eda informs Luz that witches have a bile sac of magic that's connected to their heart, but she isn't sure how Luz could do magic if she doesn't have that. Luz records her one last time performing a light spell when Eda passes out from exhaustion. King and Luz take Eda upstairs and put her in her nest. When Luz comes back downstairs, she is still wondering how to cast the spell, but King wants to teach her about demons. He decides to help her figure out how to make magic and he thinks that Eda's magic comes from this potion that he sees her take. King takes the potion from Eda and gives it to Luz. Before she can drink it, a flash of lighting scares her enough that she drops the potion. The lights in the house go out and then they hear Hooty scream. When they enter the living room, they see the creature above scratching up Hooty's door and HOoty's dEaD?!. It runs away and breaks into the second level of the house. King and Luz decide to go upstairs to find Eda. When they don't find Eda, King goes to find his books to determine what type of demon this is. When he returns, now both Eda and Luz are missing. He runs through the house and is confronted by the monster. As he narrowly avoids getting eaten, he runs through the house and Luz grabs him. She explains that she went and hid and King notices something on her foot. On Eda's potion bottle it had said "An elixir a day" and the ripped off piece that was on Luz's foot says "keeps the beast at bay". When the creature bursts through the door, they realize that it is Eda.

Luz's camera flashes which briefly stuns Eda so that they can get away. While hiding, King tells Luz that he feels upset that she doesn't want to learn about demons. She says that she wants to learn magic because in the human world she was a no one and she is hoping magic will help her find some belonging. Luz tells King that the only way they can stop Eda is by him sharing his demon knowledge with her to find a way to stop Eda. They determine that a powerful light could stop her, but Luz's phone isn't working and she doesn't know how to do the light spell. Right when she says this, she decides to watch the video of Eda performing the light spell and the image freezes on Eda's casting of the spell and there is a glyph in the middle. Luz redraws the glyph on a leaf and when she taps it SHE has made magic! King and Luz devise a plan to lure Eda to a giant drawing of the light glyph. When Luz taps the wall, Eda screams and next we see she's in her bed with a straw to a bottle of elixir. At first, Eda is angry with them, but then she sees Luz performing the light spell with glyphs. She opens up to them and says that she was cursed when she was a kid to turn into this Owl Beast and that's why people call her the Owl Lady. She can't remember who cursed her, but when she takes her elixir she is able to maintain the curse. The episode ends with Eda falling asleep and facing this nightmare where she can see the silhouette of who cursed her, but she doesn't know who it is.

This episode provides us with more lore into who Eda and King are and a little bit about the Boiling Isles. We learn about Eda's curse and that it seems to be brought on when she is more exhausted or has used a lot of magic in the day. We don't know who has cursed her, just that she has been living with the curse for a while (more on this later). For King, we learn that he is some kind of demon (more on this later).

Incoming spoilers for the rest of the series! Exit this post now if you don't want to learn anything and just follow along with the episodes. If you are a rewatcher like me - let's dive in!

So, Eda talks about the person who has cursed her and she isn't sure who that person is. We then find out that the one who cursed her was her sister Lilith. The main reason that she curses her is so that she can make the spot in the Emperor's Coven because she knows that Eda is more powerful than her. The Emperor also promises her that he has the cure to rid Eda of her curse (fucking lies). It is so devastating to curse your sister with the slim promise of a cure. Also, at this time, the Emperor has access to the Collector who seems to either be the one who cursed the Owl Beast to their scroll or at least a related to the being that did. Was Belos already aware that Eda could and would destroy him and so he pushed Lilith to curse her to at least buy him time to get everything in order for his Draining Spell? If that is true fuuuuuck Belos. I wonder if in The Long Lived King, we will get to see more lore on the Collector before they are set free by King.

Second, King believes himself to be a demon because he is unaware of Titans and the fact that he himself is a Titan. Why would he immediately jump to labeling himself as a demon. We do see Eda is the one to give him his name so maybe she also believed he was some demon type that she never came across and the name/species stuck.

Third, Luz learns glyph magic and the Titan probably helped her learn in this moment to save his kid from the dangerous cursed witch. Eda makes a mention that early witches used to do magic differently. This could be alluding to Caleb using glyph magic when he was married to Evalyn. I wonder if we will get some more Clawthorne/Wittebane backstory in the new graphic novel.

Summerween continues with Season 1 Episode 3 of The Owl House - I'm a Teenage Abomination. Let's Fucking GOOOOOOO! Previously, we had seen these characters in the opening credits, but now we officially get introduced to Willow, Amity, and Augustus (Gus) in that order

Willow Park - a Hexside student who at the beginning of the episode is part of the Abomination track. She is friends with Augustus/Gus Porter. She is a positive force who often uses affirmations with herself. She is known as Half a Witch by others in her class. By the end of the episode, she is shown to be very powerful and capable as a Plant track student

Amity Blight - an Abomination track student at Hexside school. She has beef with Willow and refers to her as half-a-witch because she is not the strongest in the abomination classes. She is one of Willow's bullies and strives to be the top student at Hexside.

Augustus/Gus Porter - the sweetest of all sweetie pies. Loves humans and is best friends with Willow. He is the president of the Human Appreciation Society at Hexside. Love my boi <3

Episode Summary:

Luz is scavenging a garbage slug with Eda. Luz wants learn more witchy things, but Eda does not want to teach her like a school. Luz becomes interested in the idea of a school, but Eda tells her that you can be resourceful just by searching through the garbage slug. From the garbage slug, Luz takes with her a greasy slime ball. Luz leaves and, while walking through the woods, comes across Willow attempting to give herself a pep talk to get through her class. Amity rolls by Willow and tells her that she will never be anything because she will only be "half-a-witch". This causes Willow to become angry and she uses her plant magic to conjure up thorny vines. One of the vines grabs Luz and Willow helps her get untangled from the vines. Willow notices that Luz is a human by her ears. Luz decides to make a deal with Willow: Luz will act as her abomination to get her a good grade and Luz will be able to see the inside of the magic school. Willow introduces her friend Augustus to Luz and Luz gives him the nickname, Gus. Luz acts as Willow's abomination creation and gets Willow an A+ on her project which angers Amity. Meanwhile, King is training his garbage slug who has gotten significantly bigger. He has technically won his bet against Eda so she has to wear the shame hat. Willow and Gus are eating and he gives Luz a PB+J which Amity sees and causes her to go talk to Principal Bump. Principal Bump goes to dissect Luz and Gus causes a diversion to give Willow and Luz time to run away. Bump puts a seal on the school so Luz can't leave. As they are planning a way to get out, Luz shows the slime ball to Willow which turns out to be a seed. Willow uses this to create vines to break through the portal. Amity is still after them and Willow sacrifices herself getting detention so that Luz won't get dissected. Eda has helped King destroy his garbage slug soldier. Luz runs into Eda's arms and thanks her for telling her to be resourceful, but that they need to save Willow from school. That's when Willow and Gus come to the Owl House with good news and bad news: Willow is now on the plant magic track at school, but Luz is now banned from returning. However, she hopes to learn more from her great teacher.

This episode focuses on all the different ways that people can learn skills. Obviously, Eda does not like school, but it seems that Luz does like school (even if her time in school was difficult for her). She shows a passion for learning which Eda starts to take seriously to help her learn magic and become a witch. In some ways Eda is right to hate school: we have the Abomination teacher, Professor Homunculus, who likes to bully students who he thinks don't have the skills to be in his classroom ("All of the abominations are you") and the cliques and name calling that Willow endures by her fellow classmates. Luz uses the teachings of Eda ("A great witch is resourceful") to help Willow and her escape and for Willow to be able to choose her own track of study. I find it very interesting that Willow mentioned her parents wanted her to be in the Abomination track when that is not something Willow seems particularly interested in. It seems like the Abomination track can help with your future (more in the spoiler zone on this).

Now, Dana has created many great characters on this show, who I love dearly. However, one of my top characters in the Owl House is Willow Park. Willow is one of the toughest characters in the show, deals with her own struggles of not being taken seriously with her magic, and teaches others how to use a positive mindset or outlook to problem solve. Although Willow has this positive mindset, she often refers to herself as "Half-A-Witch Willow" which seems to either started with Amity or other students at Hexside. Yet, Willow still tries her best and, accidentally, shows off to Bump her true skills with plant magic.

Luz provides Gus with everything he needs as a witch who loves humans. He gives him a nickname (that he uses for the rest of the series), a way to greet others, and a human friend who can teach him more about the human world.

Amity Blight ಠ_ಠ. When the show was first coming out, I had only heard of it based on gifsets I saw on Tumblr that was from The Enchanting Grom episode later in this season. I am always shocked when we first meet Amity and how much of a bully she really is. She says to Willow "You're so unnoticeable I almost ran into ya", tells her that others call her "half a witch", and attempts to get Luz dissected by the principal. You can already see that she has this need to be the best in the school but YIKES girl cool it! I wonder, with this Summerween revisit, how I will feel about Amity's arc.

Finally, the end credits show Willow in her new plant track uniform <3

Alright let's get into it!

FIRST OF ALL! I never noticed that when Luz is talking about her plan to get into the school by being Willow's abomination that Willow blushes in what is the tell tale sign that you like someone. Dana has confirmed that Willow is pansexual so was this a moment to let us know! That's so cute - I fear I need to read some Luz and Willow fluff.

Later in the series, we find out that Amity and Willow used to be friends and that Amity's parents forbade Amity from being friends with Willow or they would make it so that Willow could not attend Hexside. Especially with how Odalia treats her children, Amity feels the need to prove herself by getting great grades and being the top student. However, I don't understand why that means bullying Willow so harshly. When she tells Willow that others call her half-a-witch or comments on her abomination not being her own skills, no one else is around. So, even if she was just performing meanest so her parents wouldn't come after Willow who was she performing to? It seems like Amity began to blur the lines between protecting Willow and hurting her.

The Abomination track. When we meet Willow's dads they seem supportive of Willow and whatever she is interested in, so why make a note that her parents thought the Abomination track was the best fit for her. When we see a major player in the Abomination field, Alador Blight, he is using his magic to basically fund the military industrial complex on the Boiling Isles. Was this the reason why so many parents wanted their kids, who are not doing well in the Abomination classes, to get this magic?

LAST THING! When Bump is going to dissect Luz - his knife is eerily similar to the knife that Phillip uses to kill Caleb. I wonder if this is a true easter egg, like that knife was found on the Boiling Isles and has made its way to Hexside or, to denote an evil knife, you gotta make it jagged. I literally screamed when he pulled it out of his sleeves.

Welcome back to my recap of Season 1 Episode 2 of the Owl House for Summerween. This episode is titled Witches Before Wizards. Once again, we are focused on the three main characters of the show, Luz, Eda, and King.

Episode Summary:

Luz has woken up to the delight that she is in the Demon Realm ready to become a Witch Apprentice with Eda. However, Eda is still pretty rough around the edges. She doesn't view the world in the idyllic lens that Luz does with discovering her magic like in her stories. She sends Luz on her errands for the day which includes selling potions to citizens of Bonesborough. While on the errand, Luz meets a wizard named Adegast. He sends Luz on a quest with a map sending her to "Celestial Lake" to retrieve the Celestial Staff that can only be retrieved by a human girl. When she returns back to the Owl House, Eda and King mock Luz for believing this scam by the wizard. When they leave her room in darkness, the light from the window reveals a hidden message for her quest. Luz decides to follow the quest by herself and Eda has some concerns with the wizard's intentions. As we see Luz on her quest, where she meets the hunky teen, Nevareth, and a medieval village, Eda is following up with the wizard. The castle that he was living in now looks abandoned and on the inside is a bunch of the scrolls that Luz is using as a map. Back to Luz, she is crushing it on the quest, but as Eda follows in her tracks all these places are ruins. On her quest, Luz receives gifts from those that she helps and when she finally reaches the "Celestial Staff", she is able to pull it out it's holding. However, that's when Adegast reveals the illusion and the puppets he controlled to lure Luz into the trap. Her gifts turn into shackles around her. Eda appears and demands Luz be set free. Adegast offers her an illusion to stay in where she will be treated like the chosen one (which I think means he was gonna make her into one of his puppets and if that's not fucked up I don't know what is). Luz breaks free and her and Eda defeat Adegast. Eda promises to help Luz become a witch and shows her a different perspective of the Boiling Isles.

This episode is an expectation subversion. We have all grown up with stories where the characters are taken to a magical place where they are treated as the "chosen one". The obvious one is the British children's book written by the evil TERF, but there is also Narnia (the Penvensies are royalty), Percy Jackson (he's a child of the Big Three which is unique), Star Wars (Anakin, Luke, and Rey are powerful Jedis saved from their "mediocre" existence). However, on the Boiling Isles, everything is harder. There isn't a clear path to success and signs won't appear for someone to follow to receive their destiny.

This episode has two great lines of dialogue. The first one is when Luz is being lured into the illusion that Adegast has created after he has captured Eda and King. She says "It is beautiful here. And you guys think I'm special. But it's not real!" I love this line because it is showing people that having something the "easy way" is not the best way to achieve your desires. Especially in this world of AI (even though this came out before this new wave of "generative AI"), it's showing and labeling value of hard work. Luz immediately tells Adegast that she wants to earn her magic staff rather than deal with the slop of the Celestial Staff and Adegast's illusions.

The second great line of dialogue is when Eda is showing Luz the Boiling Isles. Luz wonders how she knew that the wizard was a fake and Eda mentions the idea of "the chosen one" being far fetched. She says "But if we all waited around for a prophecy to make us special, we'd die waiting. And that's why you need to choose yourself." Like the writers room was cooking when writing this episode. Eda starts the episode by making fun of Luz, not taking her seriously, and avoiding the responsibility of teaching her magic. However, we already see how much she cares about Luz by walking into the trap set by Adegast and pushing Luz to work hard to learn magic and get a staff. By the end of the episode, she is promising Luz that she will have her own staff someday.

Once again, anything from this point forward will contain spoilers for the entire series. I have watched this series multiple times and have looooooots of thoughts about it. If this is your first time watching, come back to this later if you continue watching to see how I have connected things. If you have seen the show multiple times like I have: welcome ψ(｀∇´)ψ

First and foremost: fuuuuuuck Adegast. That dude sucks and Eda is correct in saying "don't trust men in comfortable clothes". However, in his bullshit, he says that there is a prophecy that states "a young human girl will use the celestial staff to free this world from an ancient evil." Now, this is sounding very much like Luz's role in defeating Belos. I just talked about my two favorite quotes being the opposite of this (in which you should choose yourself and work hard for your own destiny), however; it is very interesting that this was the fake prophecy that Adegast tells. Even that the Celestial Staff resembles Azura's staff which resembles the bottom of Stringbean when she is in staff form.

I love that when Luz sets off on her quest, she takes the sword that yells "By the power of Skullgar" which seems to be a reference to He-Man/She-Ra. One of the writers, Lee Knox Ostertag, is married to the creator of She-Ra Princesses of Power, ND Stevenson <3

While walking around Bonesborough, Luz wonders if she is the only human here. She means in this moment, but it makes me imagine the other humans who lived there: Caleb and Philip. Once again, a Clawthorne which "lures" a human into the Demon Realm. Both Caleb and Luz take the opportunity to learn and love the place they have been introduced, but Philip (evil ass) only sees the "danger" and uses this to gain corrupt power. It is very sad that Luz only sees herself as similar to Philip because she only knows his story in relation to the Demon Realm. I wonder if in The Long Lived King, we will get the members of the Owl House realizing that Caleb might actually be a distant relative to Eda (married Evelyn and she later had a kid). We already see that Hunter continues with the Clawthorne business of carving palismans, but I wonder if that was just due to his interests or if they are aware that he is related to the Clawthornes (basically is the reanimated corpse of Caleb - a horrifying thought that we will expand upon when we get to season 2 and 3)

Here we are with Season 1 Episode 1 of The Owl House: A Lying Witch and a Warden. I think this is a great pilot episode for this Disney Channel show - it introduces us to all the important characters (Luz, Eda, and King) and gets us to understand their motivations. However, I feel like Dana may have made some changes to the overall story from the pilot episode (i.e., Warden Wrath having a big villain story line).

Luz - a nerdy teen who loves fantasy novels, witches, anime music, and has a flair for the dramatics. She lives with her mom, Camila in a small house next to the woods. In the first episode, we see that Luz sticks up for those disenfranchised by society, loves to help and teach others new skills, and desires to become a witch

Eda - Eda the Owl Lady is known as the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles. She uses an owl staff in which the owl can be removed from the staff (more on this later). She lives in a house called The Owl House with an owl creature in the door frame called Hooty. Her roommate is a creature named King who she cares for. She is shown to hate restrictions on magic and freedom, she sticks up for those that need help, and determines the "weirdos" in her community

King - a creature living in the Owl House with Eda. He views himself as a monarch amongst lesser people.

Episode Summary:

Luz is in the principal's office after her book report scared many of her students. Her book report is about the book "The Good Witch Azura" - a fantasy novel about witches. It is shown that she has had many instances in which demonstrates her "eccentric" personality type that doesn't fit into the school (pulling sausages out of her stomach during a Romeo and Juliet play, creating a griffin statue with spider breath, and flipping her eyelids out during cheer leading tryouts). Her mother, Camila sends her away to summer camp (Thinking Inside the Box) to help with her ability to fit in. Before Luz can leave, she chases after a little owl who stole her book and enters into the Demon Realm. She meets Eda the Owl Lady who takes her under her wing to get away from some guards. When they get to the Owl House, Eda uses Luz's predicament of being stuck in the Demon Realm to help retrieve King's crown from the Conformatorium - the prison for those that don't adhere to society's rules. Once Luz helps Eda and King, Eda gives her the key to go home while they fight against the Warden of the jail. However, Luz stays to help them and they return to the Owl House. From there, Luz decides to stay in the Demon Realm to learn about how to become a witch from Eda. She texts her mom that she is going to like "summer camp".

This sets up the rest of the season to get ready for Luz's adventures in the Demon Realm.

In the episode, we see Luz use the line Azura used in her book report when she defeated her villain when Luz sends the fireworks in Warden Wrath's mouth ("Now eat this sucker!").

We see three people that Luz talks to in the Conformatorium and their crimes: a girl who likes to write fan fiction about foods falling in love, a guy who likes to eat his eyes, and a white triangle with red hair who believes in conspiracy theories. The last character is apparently Dana's self insert character.

In this episode, we get the whole thesis for the series: Us weirdos have to stick together. This is such a great line in children's media to form community with one another. We see Luz, Eda, and King using this mantra throughout the series by befriending other witches on the Boiling Isles <3

From this point forward, I will be discussing future events in the seasons and how they connect to the pilot episode. If you are reading this and you haven't watched ALL of the Owl House - follow along with the re-watch posts and come back to this once we have wrapped lol.

I wonder if the Emperor was always going to show up later in the series or if Warden Wrath would have had a bigger villain story line. He is the main villain in this pilot episode and he seems to be the one after Eda (for a date but still). He never talks about an Emperor or the potential petrification to Eda.

In the Conformatorium, we see Katya who is a future member of the BATs in later episodes. Also Tinella Nosa (an icon and the moment)

King grabs Francois who turned out to be a bigger role than I had first anticipated.

King mentions Eda's "last boyfriend" and Eda responds "not my boyfriend!" I wonder who this is referencing? Based on future episodes, we know that Raine and Eda break up before she meets King and when King reads her diary he uses they/them for Raine. So is this another "boyfriend" that Eda had or maybe just the seeds for Raine or Eda's fluid sexuality.

I looked on the Owl House Wiki page and didn't see it confirmed, but it seemed like when the fireworks were going off, you could make out a little of either the light glyph or the fire glyph in the sparkles.

Finally, we see Camila text Luz asking her about summer camp and Luz responding to her. I wonder if Camila was just arriving home after dropping off Vee at the summer camp. What did they talk about on their ride to the camp?

Bonus: In the end credits, we see Amity, Willow, and Gus. Willow is still in the Abomination track uniform in this end credit. I love that over the course of the series, the opening and end credits changes a little to demonstrate the change in the show.

For this Summerween, I want to do a re-watch of the Owl House to prepare for the new Owl House graphic novel (The Long Lived King). I'm going to be breaking down the episodes and talking about the ways that Dana expertly set up the plot for future episodes.
