Hestia Jones

Amelia gave a small smile – she was used to compliments, especially from younger Hufflepuffs, but lately they’d been making her feel more and more inadequate each time. “That’s a good way to go about it – although it can be a bit of a struggle for me considering I like to control as many things as I possible can and get my nose in everyone’s business,” she said with a laugh. While she knew it annoyed many people, she couldn’t really help herself, and at least that’d be a useful quality as an Auror. 

“I’m glad you’re finding ways to cope that work for you. But do remember that it’s also okay to feel your feelings, you know? It’s okay to have days where you want to act like everything’s fine and days where you might want to go on an on about what’s happening, the what if’s, and cry it out or repeat yourself. And that’s valid too. I know I haven’t really been around, for anyone – but I hope you have people around you can go to for that?” she asked uncertainly. @hestia-jonesy​

“Oh, no, I mean I’m also a massive control freak” Hestia replied, trying to reassure Amelia. She wasn’t sure she agreed with her statement, whilst Amelia had never understand why Hestia was so crazy about Amos, she’d always helped her, always given her advice. Amelia was one of the few people she trusted to be truly honest with her as well “it’s most definitely easier said than done- but figured if I have to get my life back on track, I have to start somewhere, and that seemed like the easiest thing to tackle”

“Yeah I guess” Hestia mused. Really she didn’t want to open that door too far. It had scared her how low she had been after her party. She never wanted to feel that vulnerable ever again “I just, for the moment I just want to focus on something good if that makes sense- just for a little while I want to ignore everything else”

“Yeah, everyone has been great, honestly i’m lucky with the amount of support I have” Hestia replied. She did feel a little guilty that she hadn’t really shared everything she was feeling with her friends, but she still wasn’t ready.

In wasn’t hard for Hestia to pick what she would change. It was obvious. There were two things really, both linked together. Both about the boy who owned her whole heart. She’d dreamt plenty of times of what could happen if she could turn back time and do everything better. It was just a fantasy of course, in real life nobody got a chance to fix such huge mistakes.

Firstly, she wished that she’d told him she loved him earlier, in the proper way. When she wasn’t crying and a total emotional mess. She wished that she’d properly believed him when he’d said he loved her. She didn’t know what it was that stopped her from believing that. In other ways, she was super confident, not when it came to love, being vulnerable. She was atrocious at talking about her feelings. She did hope that someday she would get better at that. Perhaps this the bigger regret of the two, because it was the one that was entirely her fault. Of course, she knew why she’d struggled with it, why she’d held him at arms length for most of the relationship. She was scared. The love she felt for him was so intense, she was too scared to give him the power to hurt her. What she hadn’t realised, is in doing that she’d just ended up hurting them both. The letter she wrote was an attempt to explain it, she couldn't bare the thought that he didn’t know how special he was to her. Although, she really couldn’t have timed that worse if she’d tried. She was trying to work on her own insecurities, making huge mistakes had helped to bring clarity to some things. That would probably be a long road though. For now, she was just trying to control them more, not let them make decisions for her. 

his  first  instinct  was  to  go  in  for  a  hug,  but  he  stopped  himself  because  he  wasn’t  sure  what  was  appropriate  for  their  relationship  ( or  lack  of )  anymore.  that’s  what  he  hated  the  most,  the  unknown.  there  had  been  a  time  when  she  was  the  only  constant  in  his  life,  besides  quidditch.  now  they  were  —  what?   —  friends?  barely.  it  almost  felt  like  they  were  strangers  again.  he  hated  that.  he  hated  never  knowing  what  too  say  to  her.  they  needed  to  fix  this.  he  needed  to  fix  this.  out  of  habit,  he  pushed  a  hand  through  his  hair  and   offered  her  a  small,  lopsided  smile.

“eh,”  he  shrugged,  folding  his  arms  over  his  chest  as  he  leaned  against  the  railing.  “i’m  only  taking  three  newts  so  i  can  focus  on  quidditch,  but  that  always  takes  a  lot  of  my  time.”  quidditch  always  had  been  and  always  would  be  the  love  of  amos’  life.  anything  —  or  anyone  —  else  would  always  come  second.  hestia  deserves  better  than  that.  wren  deserved  better  than  that.  but  amos  had  always  been  a  selfish  man.  he  shrugged  and  tugged  his  bottom  lip  between  his  teeth.  “no,  just  wanted  to  see  how  you’re  doing,  i  guess.  haven’t  seen  you  around  much  is  all.”  not  exactly  true,  but  it  felt  like  he  hadn’t  seen  her  at  all,  even  though  they  shared  a  communal  living  space  and  mutual  friends.  “i’m  free  this  class  too  so…”

“You point this out like I don’t already know that you’re married to the game” she teased, flashing him a cheeky grin. Was that okay? She didn’t know. As happy as she was to be here alone with him, she still couldn’t shake that feeling of awkwardness. She knew that she’d damaged whatever friendship they used to have. Everything in her wished she could take it all back. Go back to before, just him and her, but even if she could convince Gwen to give him a chance, it was too late now, she’d broken it. Instead she would just love him in any way she could. She knew it was selfish to be even thinking these thoughts, he was with Wren now, and Wren had always been able to make him happy. She couldn’t help but pick up that he seemed as unsteady about all this as she did. Did that make it better, or worse? She didn’t like that he wasn’t his usual confident self around him, she’d robbed him of that in a way, she could only hope that would come back with time.

Oh, okay. She couldn’t help but be glad that he just wanted to spend time with her. It would be a little difficult at first, sure, but it had been weird only half having him around. He had been such a constant in her life, she was a little lost when he wasn’t around. Not just because she was, and always would be madly in love with him, but because he was her friend, someone who had always been there. “I know what you mean” was the only thing she could think to say that construed what she actually meant, but didn’t make things even more awkward.

“I mean, it’s quite a nice day, how about going for a walk?” he fiddled with her fingers as she asked. It was a nice day, and frankly she would prefer to be away from the castle, away from people who couldn’t keep their noses out of other peoples business.She looked up at him, nervously awaiting his answer.

The air was getting more bitter as it got later into fall, but the sun was still shinning and Gideon sat in the court yard with Hesita watching the wind blow the yellow and orange leaves this way and that instead of reading from his worn care of magical creatures textbook. He had grown very used to Hestia’s prescience over the last few years as he and Fabian had gotten closer with her, it was no surprise to him that Amos had fallen for her and his brother had found a best friend in her. Gideon often found it hard to concentrate on his study, he was very easily distracted and his mind wandered, always looking for something to capture his interest. But Hestia often times was able to keep on track. He quickly snatched a leaf from the ground holding it up triumphantly looking at Hestia “do you wanna see something cool?”  his hands quickly signing as a smile crept across his features.

Hestia was sat was Gideon in the courtyard, a chunky sweater pulled over her uniform. She’d offered to help with some homework, sometimes he needed a little push to get him to concentrate. Not that Hestia, helpful people with their work, was were she felt her most naturally confident. She wondered if one day she might have that kind of confidence in other aspects of her life.  Gideon was quite an easy person to be around, he had a natural arm of charm about him, if course, she wasn’t as close to him as she was to Fabian, but he was still one of her closest friends.

She rolled her eyes at him, he was far from the model student. “Fine” she signed back, giving him a pointed look “but then you focus or i’ll make you take a quiz on it on Friday night”

Amelia moved slightly to leave space for Hestia to get comfortable. “You know, busy too. I’ve been having a bit of a harder than I’m used to, but I guess that’s going to happen more and more with adult life,” she said with a forced chuckle. “And there’s that whole debacle with the article, which I’d like to not talk about, if that’s alright with you. I just feel like I haven’t had a single conversation that wasn’t about that in the past three days,” she said with a self-conscious shrug. “I don’t know what you think, but I feel that sometimes with rough patches, I’d rather just keep my head down and get through them than keep talking about my feelings all the time, you know? I mean– that’s probably awful advice, now that I think about it. But that tends to be how I do things. I’m sorry if I assumed wrongly that maybe you’d want some time for yourself before, you know, talking things through.” @hestia-jonesy​

“Yes, i’m definitely struggling to balance everything” Hestia nodded. She was extremely organised when it came to school work, that was the only reason she wasn’t sinking. “I’m sure you’ll do just fine though, you’re one of the smartest, most hardworking people I know.” Amelia might as well just be another word for excellence. Hestia had always looked up to her in that way. 

“I understand that completely” Hestia replied enthusiastically. After he party, almost all her friends wanted to ask her about Amos. It was just out of concern, but every conversation she had just made her relive everything over and over again. It was easier to move on when she didn’t talk about it. Hestia had of course read the Gazette, it was impossible not see Rita’s column. “No,  I feel the same as you do, no amount of talking is going to fix anything for me anyway, i’m just trying to focus on looking forward and trying to learn not to worry about things outside of my control”

He couldn’t help the amused almost - devilish grin - that pulled onto his features as she snarled at him. It was cute how much she was trying, it really was. It was a nice effort, but if she thought that litte display was going to intimidate someone like him, really she had another thing coming. “You- huh.. you still love him. Don’t you? It’s written all across that pretty-” He paused to raise one of his hand and move a strand of hair over her shoulder before continued, pausing with every word: “Little. Face of yours. Why are you defending him um? When he’s off with that offer half blood. What’s her name again, Wren? Poor little Hestia, did he find someone better?”

“You swear what? What would you do um?” Evan asked with a light quirk of an eye brow as he watched every little flicker of her facial expression. “Um I think I’ll pass sleeping with my cousins, that’s a little too ancient Rome for my tastes.” With a light ‘t’ of his tongue, a small pout formed on his features as his faced turned placid. Raven like eyes watching her every move, almost calculating. He didn’t move away from a second, his feet planted in the cobble stones under their feet, being only a mere few inches from her at this point. With a simply flick of his hand he’d pulled his wand out from his pocket and raised it. Pressing the tip of it under her chin, a little hard just enough to cause some kind of discomfort. “You think you’re so brave don’t you?” Rosier spoke, his voice quiet as he watched her, tilting his head lightly to the side. “You’re a traitor- sympathizing with them.” He hissed, a harshness pulling onto his features as he leaned a little closer. “You picked the wrong side Jones. Pity too.. you could have had so much potential.” He paused for a moment, features tightening as he practically challenge in a low snarl: “Say it again.. I dare you.” @hestia-jonesy​

“I don’t see how that matters” Hestia snapped back defensively. How was it any of his business.  She’d protect any of her friends in her heartbeat. That’s who she was. She didn’t mind people having a go at her, she could let that go, but when it came to people bullying her friends, she would stand up for them against anyone.  She tried and failed to stop the goosebumps that appeared on her skin as he reached for her hair, he made her skin crawl. She didn’t realise she was holding her breath until he moved slightly back and she exhaled. “He’s my friend, that’s why- if Wren makes him happy that i’m glad for them both- it’s not about me- a concept you’re probably not aware of, I know”

She knew he would ask her to provide details, she wasn’t actually sure what to say.  Unlike she imagined he did, she didn’t have torture plans ready to go. “Trust me, you wouldn’t like the lengths i’d be willing to go to.” She knew that if the time ever came, her spells would be mostly defensive, unless she was given no other choice. If anyone ever did try hurt Amos though, that might be a different story, her emotions would probably cloud her moral judgement. Hestia almost jumped as his wand appeared under her neck. She tried her best to control her expression. She wasn’t really listening to his rant, instead trying to work out an escape route. For this, she would have to take from Gwenog’s playbook. She hoped he was too busy trying to intimidate her to notice her sliding her wand out of her pocket. 

“No, i’ve chosen chosen exactly the right side, actually” she replied. She knew taking a deep breath would probably alert him to her plans, so instead she counted down in her head. 3...2...1... she swung her knee and hit him squarely in the crotch. He stumbled backwards, it was all the chance she needed. “Petrificus totalus” she almost shouted as she aimed her wand at him. Watching his body go limp, she took the opportunity and ran off as fast as she could back to the castle. She would pay for her actions later, she was sure.

amos  diggory  wasn’t  amos  diggory  without  hestia  jones  in  his  life.  losing  her  was  like  losing  a  limb.  he  couldn’t  play  quidditch  with  a  missing  appendage,  and  he  knew  he  wouldn’t  be  at  the  top  of  his  game  until  he  fixed  things  with  hestia.  they  weren’t  avoiding  each  other  —  that  would  have  been  impossible  with  their  tangled  web  of  friends  —  but  the  two  had  not  been  alone  together  since  her  party.  he  still  felt  guilty  about  how  everything  went  down.  there  were  so  many  things  that  he  wished  he  had  done  differently,  but  without  a  timeturner,  he  couldn’t  go  back  in  time.  no,  he  would  have  to  remedy  this  the  old  fashioned  way  —  with  a  hundred  years  of  apologies.  when  he  saw  her  on  the  staircase,  he  decided  that  was  neutral  enough  territory  and  he  jumped  on the top  stair just  as  it  dislodged  itself  from  the  platform.  probably  a  risky  move  but  he  was  known  for  his  daredevil  stunts  on  and  off  the  pitch.  “hess, wait,”  he  called  out,  carefully  descending  a  few  steps.  “you  have  a  free  period now,  yeah?”  he  was  only  asking  to  be  polite.  he  knew  she  did.  he  had  her  schedule  memorized  before  he  knew  his  own.  @hestia-jonesy​

Hestia had just finished Transfiguration and was heading back to the common room to dump her books and actually enjoy some free time for the first time in weeks. She turned as she heard a familiar voice call her name. It was a voice she would know anywhere. Amos. She hadn't been avoiding him, she really hadn't. She just hadn't been going out of her way to find him like she usually would.

As requested, she waited for him to catch up with her, offering him a bright smile as he reached her. Her heart still fluttered when she looked at him, but it was a little bit easier to ignore. She knew she was strong enough to push past it now. It was that or lose him from her life forever and that was an impossible thought.

"Yeah I do" she replied "and an actual free period too- i feel like every free period these days is taken up with some form of work-I mean you probably have it worse- final year and everything"

"Did you need my help with something?" She asked, figuring it was best to keep things light. She'd made a total mess of things lately, letting her emotions get the better of her. Not a mistake she would be making again.

Evan couldn’t help the all be it slight smile that crept onto his features as he listened to her drag on and on. Devilish and untrustworthy, as if he’d just found a new toy to play with. Pushing himself up off the wall from where he was sitting, he folded his arms across his chest loosely as he eyes her. Raven like eyes, glances up her frame before settling on her features. Hufflepuff, this could be fun.

“Cute.” Evan uttered, with tight features. Standing almost he was sure unfortunate close in front of her. “You think I’d want to buy this dump? Huh, maybe I should. Things would be alot cleaner without dirty blood roaming the halls. Like- oh that’s that boy you’re so found on. Amos Diggary is it? Of course he’d be one of the first to go along with all the mudbloods. Half blood filth, it’s no place here.” Really he was testing to the waters to see if he could get a reaction out of her.

“Me? Rude? I wouldn’t dream of it.” Evan spoke with mere light shrug of his shoulders. “I’m sorry where are my manners.” The raven haired boy paused as he steadied his stance. Leaning that little bit closer only to intimate her. "How about you please, fuck off. Trust me when I say, you don’t want to make me ask you again.” @hestia-jonesy​

Hestia tried to stand her ground as he moved unnervingly close to her. Unfortunately he was taller than her, so that certainly didn't help. Still she would try her best to hide how uncomfortable he made her. She knew people like him got off on that sort of thing and she wasn't going to give him the satisfaction. His words filled her with a level rage she didn't even know she was capable. Any fear she had temporarily disappeared. "Stay away from him" he snarled back at him. Really he should've known better than to essentially threaten Amos. She would walk through the fires of hell and back for him "Or i swear." It would be best for Evan if he didn't underestimate her. Whatever the consequences for her.

"He has every right to be here, this obsession you lot have with blood status, it's sickening, it really is" Hestia didn't often speak of it. She was privileged enough that it wasn't something she had to think about constantly. "What so sleeping with your own cousins to keep the line pure, that's the way forward" she shook a head and couldn't help but let a laugh escape "you're pathetic, you really are."

Hestia was quiet for a few seconds before her speech sunk in. The adrenaline was dying out now and the fear was creeping in. Still she needed to pretend she wasn't afraid of him. "Well you're going to have to, because i'm not moving" she hoped that had come out as firmly as she'd imagined it in her mind. She subconsciously put her hand in her pocket, curling it around her wand. She would be surprised if he let her get away with what she'd just spouted at him.

Of course as soon as he lifted his eyes up to look at the other, the recognition fell onto place though it didn’t stop the placid tight expression from changing on his features. He’d learnt enough students by now to know who was worth his energy. Hestia Jones. Hufflepuff, his year, waste of his time.Though Evan couldn’t help the light quirk of his lips in amusement at her feisty words. It wasn’t something he’d expected coming from such a ‘sweet innocent little Hufflepuff’. But it was a cute effort. 

“And yet here you are, wasting your breath and my time.” Evan spoke with a quirk of an eye brow, almost a challenge because really, when wasn’t it fun to poke a Hufflepuff or two. Taking another drag from his cigarette, he shifted when he sat on the wall so he could turn his attention to the other. Only to offer a tight fake smile as he spoke: “Maybe you shouldn’t linger in places you are clearly unwelcome sweetheart.” @hestia-jonesy​

“Well if you’d saved your breath, instead of being rude, we wouldn’t be here in the first place” Hestia was always intimidated by people like him. She was no fool, she knew they were unpredictable, and had no regards for anyone else’s feelings. She also knew somebody had to stand up to them though, as scared as she was inside. It wasn’t even about her, it was about the younger students who often came away trembling and terrified. She had to do what she could. She knew she could hold her own if these things ever turned in to a dual.

“You know you don’t own the castle, right” she stated “it’s one of things you actually can’t buy”

“I can walk and linger wherever I please” She continued, standing her ground. Making a mental note of which pocket her wand was stored in “despite what bullies like you believe”

Amelia sat down – or arguably, threw herself – on her favorite couch in the middle of the common room with a smile on her face. It’d been two days since the party, so the hangover was long gone, and she hadn’t heard anything about people witnessing her behavior – any of it. She realized Hestia Jones was sitting close by, as the younger witch looked up from the book she’d been reading. “Hey, there – Hestia. I feel like I haven’t seen you in so long. I know that’s probably my fault – I’ve been so busy, but that’s no excuse. How are you doing?” she asked the last question in a softer voice, trying to shed the manic enthusiasm from her earlier statements. She’d shared a House with Hestia for six years now, and if she was completely honest, she’d noticed the girl had been a bit down lately. Amelia bit her lip, blaming herself for being so conceited she hadn’t up to her friend earlier. 

Hestia had been sitting curled up in one of the armchairs by the fireplace in the common room. She had been sat there for a few hours now, far too engrossed in her book.  After loving Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, she had moved on to Through The Looking Glass. She was definitely regretting not reading more muggle literature. If these books were anything to go by, it was fascinating. She looked up as someone slumped themselves down on to a near by couch, giving Amelia a friendly smile once she saw her. They hadn’t spoken in a while, truly mostly because with the tutoring Hestia had been so busy lately. She couldn’t deny though, she’d been kind of glad, she knew where any chat with Amelia would head at the moment. She appreciated everybody who had comforted her and offered support, but she hadn’t been ready to talk about Amos. It’d been too fresh, and she still believed talking about it wouldn’t exactly do any good, but Amelia had been there for her from the start. 

“Hey, no” Hestia’s face wrinkled in confusion “i’ve been busy too, you don’t need to feel bad, you haven’t done anything wrong”. Feeling weird about talking across the common room , Hestia grabbed her stuff and went to sit next to the girl. “I’m alright” she answered honestly “what about you, hows things been with you?”

Cigarette

 perched between his lips, his jaw tightened with disdain at the shrill shrieks of first years enjoying themselves in the courtyard. “Merde.. ferme la gueule-” The raven haired uttered under his breath as he took a long drag from his cigarette; tilting his head back slightly only to let the smoke curl off his lips . He’d been quite content by himself not having to deal with the stupidity of others when he heard the foot steps of someone approaching. He wanted to shout at them to simply; fuck off and leave him be. But he bit his tongue. Instead interrupting them before they had a chance to even breathe a word out: “If what is about to come out of your mouth is idiotic please spare me the bullshit. You can either have a cigarette and sit your ass down, or kindly fuck off.”

Hestia headed out in to the grounds to find a quiet place to study. She felt like being outside today, even if it meant bringing a blanket with her. She headed round the corner, heading towards the back of the castle. A rude voice stopping her in her tracks. Hestia wasn’t really one for confrontation, but she certainly wouldn’t ignore someone being so blatantly nasty. 

“For your information” She stated “I was actually going to look for somewhere to sit and study- I had no intention of talking to you.” She crossed her arms across her chest. Her bag swinging slightly at her side. “Maybe you shouldn’t jump to conclusions”

Septima took in Hestia’s agreement with a surprised quirk of her eyebrows. Maybe there was more to the girl than she’d initially thought. “Can you actually turn them to stone? Because that’d be properly brilliant.” She didn’t really dare cross the line and actually name people, knowing that it might ruin the mood. She knew public enemy number one was anyone with a green tie lately; yet having never had any problems with Slytherins, she really couldn’t see herself starting now and painting a target on her own back. The people on her hit list tended to be uptight bores, and something told her Hestia was probably friendly with more than one. “Or you could always take care of whoever’s in charge of the music so we can finally have something decent to dance to?” she asked with a laugh. “Either way, I’ll cover for you if someone turns up all stony in the morning.” @hestia-jonesy​

“Unfortunately not” Hestia replied. “Maybe there’s a spell for that somewhere though.” Hestia made a mental note to look it up later. Not to use it, just out of interest.  Hestia didn’t really like unanswered questions. Plus, the more spells she knew how to use, the better right. Usually she just stuck to learning the spells taught in class, but every now and then she would look stuff up in her own time. With her thirst for knowledge she did sometimes wonder why she wasn’t placed in Ravenclaw.

“I actually don’t mind the music” Hestia advised. She wasn’t picky with her music tastes, she liked a range of everything, mostly taking suggestions from her friends “but there’s far too many slow songs on their playlist, think they’ve forgotten that not everyone is in a couple.” She knew she’d only added the last bit out of bitterness, plenty of others seemed to be enjoying the slow songs.

Septima smiled, and nodded, and said whatever was expected of her – “Yeah, I agree. It’s mostly about the idea of living on a sailboat, free as the wind.” If she did have a strange fascination for the lawlessness that pirating involved, and a slightly skewed moral compass, that was for her and her only to know. She nodded along to the Hufflepuff, happy that her refusal didn’t seem to be accompanied with too much judgement. “Well, I have a few ideas of my own if you’re in need. More than one boy around these parts who could use a bit of statuesque time out.” she said as she laughed to herself and drank a large sip of her drink. @hestia-jonesy​

Hestia nodded as Septima agreed with her, glad that the girl understood where she was coming from. “I’m all ears” Hestia laughed. She wasn’t sure she’d actually do anything, she was too cautious to do anything too mischievous, but talking about it couldn’t hurt. Besides, Septima was correct, some people in this school could do with being knocked off the pedestal they’d placed themselves on. This was also the most fun she’d had in weeks, it was one of the first times she was just pretending to be having a good time. “I can think of a few myself, but I certainly won’t turn down suggestions.”
