āThanks for letting me stay the night.ā
You stepped into Reidās apartment and were immediately greeted with the scent of what a 100-year-old library probably smelled like. This observation did not surprise you in the slightest. Especially because there were books everywhere. Literally. Everywhere. The entire back wall of the living room was a giant bookcase, not to mention the books stacked neatly on the window sill, or the ones piled on the coffee table.
āMy pleasure,ā Reid said with a smile. āWould you like some tea? I have a supply in the kitchen. I also have lots of coffee, but Rossi told me that most people donāt like drinking it after 10.ā
āTea would be great.ā
You couldnāt help but giggle at Reidās insane coffee addiction. You and Morgan had a bet going that if you ever see Reid without a cup of coffee, you both had to sit next to him on the plane and ask him to teach you quantum physics for the duration of the flight. You made that bet over a year ago, and neither one of you still had any idea what the hell quantum physics was.
You walked into Reidās kitchen just to be greeted by even more books. Books sitting on top of the cabinet, on top of the fridge, you opened the cupboard under the sink to see if you could find any paper towels but all you saw was a collection of books instead.
āThatās my Shakespeare collection.ā Reid chimed in helpfully from across the room.
You smirked and shut the door just as the tea was ready. Reid got out a mug and poured the steaming tea into the cup.
āThanks, Pretty Boy.ā You laughed as you read the side of the cup.
āBirthday present from Morgan.ā
The fact that Morgan had deliberately gone out of his way to customize a pink floral coffee mug that said āPretty Boyā on the side in italics was enough to make you die of laughter.
After you had finished your tea and Reid had finished his coffee, you both decided to hit the sack, after all, today had been a long day. After catching an unsub, and then having to sit in the jet for almost 2 and half hours waiting for the weather to clear up, you finally made it back home to a very rainy Quantico. You were about to leave for your house, but Reid being Reid, insisted you stay at his place instead because, āaccording to USA Today, Over 225,000 people are injured and nearly 2,800 are killed in car accidents which occur during rain and it is widely known as being the most dangerous driving hazard.ā
You helped Reid put sheets and a blanket on both couches, because although you told him he didnāt have to, he has refused to go to his own room because he doesnāt want you to sleep alone and was now sleeping on the couch adjacent to yours. You threw a pillow on each of the couches and turned off the light.
āCould you maybe go and turn the kitchen light back on?ā
After a moment of silence filled with nothing but the branches hitting the side of the building he replied,
āIām afraid of the dark.ā
You found it slightly ironic that the boy who fights serial killers for a living is afraid of the dark, but then again, he is Spencer Reid.
You got up and turned the kitchen light back on, illumining the pitch-black room with a soft yellow glow.
āThanks.ā He said meekly.
You settled into bed and you both fell asleep.
When Reid entered the room, he saw the unsub with a gun pointed at the only girl he had ever loved. All of the others assumed he was a geek or a nerd, and most of them said it to his face. But not Mauve. Mauve didnāt care that he read War and Peace for fun, or that he could tell you the traffic report for Colorado even though he didnāt live there. She loved him just as much as he loved her. Reid had tried everything he could think of. He tried telling the unsub that he was in love with her, not Mauve. He was forced to tell Maeve that he hated her. He hated himself for saying those words. After that plan failed, he decided.
I am going to die for this girl.
The unsub took her gun away from Mauveās head and pointed it at her own. But the thing about guns is if you stand parallel to someone and shoot yourself, the bullet kills two birds with one stone.
He watched helplessly as they both collapsed on the floor in a pool of blood. He cried as he saw their lifeless bodies being carried out on stretchers with sheets put over their heads. He had never felt hollow and full of pain at the same time before that day. And for once in his life, he didnāt know how to fix it. He didnāt have the answer or the solution to his problem. He was completely powerless. Maybe, just maybe, if he called out to her, she would wake up, and they could be happy together.
āMauve? Mauve!ā Reid suddenly screamed out.
He had begun kicking the blankets off him with his arms and legs and was turning from side to side with an alarming amount of force, smashing his body into the back of the couch and then flipping back over just to do it again.
āMauve please donāt leave!ā he shouted. āI love you please!ā
He was hysterical now, begging for the someone who had been dead for months to stay with him.
You shot out of bed and flicked on the lamp next to him, illuminating his terrified body.
āReid!ā you said loudly as you shook him. āReid!ā
He snapped out of it and opened his eyes. You could see beads of sweat forming on his forehead and upper lip, as well as a ring around the neck of his shirt. His chest rose and fell rapidly as he stared up at the ceiling with tears forming in his eyes.
āHey, hey youāre okay.ā You said gently. āIt was just a nightmare, youāre safe.ā
You ran your fingers through his now very tangled curls and used the blanket to dab his forehead to wipe away some of the sweat. His face was completely flushed, and burning hot. He whimpered as he sank his head into the crook of your arm.
āI-I saw Mauve.ā His voice broke when he said her name, and you felt the tears warm cascading down his face onto your bare skin.
Your heart broke for him. Even though it had been well over a year since Mauve had died, you could still see how much he loved her. You still couldnāt believe that when he finally got the chance to meet her after all those months of talking on a payphone, she was shot and killed right in front of him. The thought of it made you shutter.
āShhh, shhh, itās okay.ā You whispered to him.
You run the edge of your thumb under his eyes to wipe away his tears. His eyebrows were furrowed together, and his mouth was slightly open, trying to help him catch his breath. He bit his lip slightly before letting out another sob. He missed her so much, and you knew nothing you could say would change that, but the least you could do was help him relax.
āReid, do you want to try going back to sleep?ā
He looked at you with fear in his eyes and a quivering lip.
āIām too scared.ā He whispered.
āItās okay Iām going stay right here until you fall asleep, and even after that Iām only a couple inches away alright?ā
He nodded slightly as he curled up in the fetal position facing you, but still refused to close his eyes, afraid that if he did he might see Mauve again.
āHere,ā you say. āJust hold my hand, Iām not going anywhere.ā
He eagerly took your hand in his and squeezed it tightly. You could feel how clammy it was underneath all the sweat. You took your other hand and set it on his back, rubbing it softly to calm him.
You watched over him as he fell asleep, with his hand wrapped limply around yours. You could hear him snoring softly as you bent your head down to plant a soft kiss on the top of his damp forehead.
