I read a post about you having trouble with fungus gnats... I am having the same problem with my red eyed croc skink terrarium... were you able to get rid of them? I have tried a few things and they keep coming back
I ended up having to empty out my entire setup and scrub it down with saltwater. I then let it dry completely before setting it back up and changing the substrate I used (I was using 50% sand, 50% coconut fiber and changed to more of a 75% sand, 25% coconut fiber with about an inch of pure sand and gravel on the bottom of the tank). Finally I put a thin layer of sand over the top of the entire substrate so that you couldn't see the coconut fiber. I've been told that coconut fiber is a huge attraction for them because they lay their eggs in it (yikes!) but coconut fiber is also a huge thing for hermit crabs so that they can burrow properly, so you can't really eliminate it entirely.Â
I also decided to err on the side of caution and replace all of my silk/fabric plants with plastic and get rid of anything porous like wood or netting and get new. It did end up getting rid of the gnats but it was a HUGE pain in the ass.Â
