Let's talk Herbs! - St. John’s Wort

This plant has long been regarded as one of the most powerful herbs for protection against evil. In the fifteenth-century Italian Tractatus de Herbis (British Library Codex Sloane 4016), it is depicted driving away a fleeing demon, reflecting its reputation across Europe as a “devil-chaser.” Traditionally, the herb was worn as a protective amulet and hung above doors and windows on St. John’s Eve during the midsummer celebration, when its bright yellow flowers are in bloom.

Card of the day - The Fool!

The Fool is numbered 0, a symbol of limitless possibility. Because it represents pure potential, it does not occupy a fixed position within the Tarot’s sequence. Some traditions place The Fool at the beginning of the Major Arcana, while others place it at the end. In many interpretations, the Major Arcana tells the story of The Fool’s journey through life, making this card a constant presence that transcends numbering altogether.

The Fool heralds new beginnings, opportunity, and untapped potential. Like the figure standing at the edge of a cliff, you are poised to take your first step into unfamiliar territory. The destination may not yet be clear, but your heart is calling you forward. This card invites you to trust the path unfolding before you, even if it appears uncertain or unconventional.

As you move into this new chapter, The Fool encourages an open mind, curiosity, and enthusiasm. Release the need to control every outcome and allow yourself to embrace the unknown. This is a time for fresh experiences, personal growth, discovery, and adventure. Fear and hesitation may arise, but they do not have to determine your direction.

The Fool also reminds you to reconnect with joy. Approach life as an experiment, remain flexible, and welcome whatever comes your way. Laugh more, dance more, and let yourself be guided by wonder rather than worry. By nurturing your carefree spirit and inner child, you open yourself to the energy that flows through and around you, awakening possibilities you may have forgotten.

It is also a wonderful time to start or go back to a creative project you've been fantasizing about! ... Or start a new hobby!

Let us open this with a brief review of the history of the history of Tarot!

Tarot first began in northern Italy during the mid-15th century as a deck of regular playing cards. Wealthy families commissioned beautifully illustrated decks known as carte da trionfi ("cards of triumph"), which were used to play games very similar to the common games of cards we know today. These early decks introduced what we now call the Major Arcana—cards such as The Fool, The Magician, and Death—alongside the four familiar suits of Cups, Swords, Wands, and Pentacles.

For more than three centuries, Tarot cards remained primarily a game tool. It wasn't until the late 18th century that French occultists began to interpret the cards as tool for diviniation. Writers such as Antoine Court de Gébelin proposed that Tarot originated in ancient Egypt, and that it concealed secret spiritual knowledge. While the claim of origin has later been disproven, the public perception of Tarot has already been transformed, and it has since been used for divination.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Tarot became closely associated with Western esotericism. Influential figures and organizations, including the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, incorporated astrology, Kabbalah, alchemy, and ceremonial magic into the symbolism of the cards. In 1909, artist Pamela Colman Smith, under the direction of Arthur Edward Waite, created the now-standard Rider–Waite–Smith Tarot deck. Its richly illustrated Minor Arcana made the cards easier to read by everyday people that don't happend to be particulary versed in the varying minutia of artistic, political, alchemical, and religious symbollogy. This helped establish the imagery that has grew into the well-recongnised standard for modern Tarot readers.
