Week 7 HW - response to The Internet's Hidden Costs
In the video by Katie Singer called The Internets Hidden Costs, it makes me truly think about all of the technology we use today. After watching the video it gave me a deeper realization of how terrible technology is for our planet and that it creates a bunch of pollution to our earth. It's unfortunate the amount of pollution a single piece of technology makes in its lifespan of creation till death. I was thinking about whether it is even possible to go back in time to where we don't have technology. In today's day and age I find it quite hard. I was thinking about college and how back then they would apply for college in a completely different way than we do today with our ability of technology. It would be hard to revert back to our old ways. Personally I can see myself trying to find alternate tech that is safer for the environment, I know that tech like that would be very expensive. It may be a long while before I get to it. A good start would be to be more cautious of what I buy and how it affects the world. Any way we look at stopping a form of technology pollution, for example if we cut out technology and go back to writing on paper then that creates destruction and pollution of trees which is just a different way of pollution. Near the end, Katie talks about finding new ways of sustainable technology for the future, so I was interested in what more I could do now with being sustainable with technology. I found simple things like turning off the lights when you leave the room or just turning off the thermostat can affect the amount of electricity you use which is a money saver but it also affects tech to make it last longer. The less you use an appliance or tech, the less wear and tear it takes on, giving it a longer lasting life, so no need to purchase as many in your life.
