I’ve been wondering: is the grain effect you use on your art purely for aesthetics, or is it perhaps part of an anti-ai filter? (and if it’s the latter, do you recommend that other artists do the same?)

I add it for texture! I just like the look of it, and like to add a subtle noise and sometimes even a grunge texture over my work. Helps to just add a bit of visual variety to otherwise simpler pieces.

Basic noise filters won't work to prevent AI scraping, I'm afraid. Glaze is the only tool I'm aware of that actively protects your style from LoRA models, but it can't stop everything either. And Nightshade doesn't protect anything, it just poisons models. Those may be worth looking into, but have some barrier to entry if you don't have a PC, and the reduction of quality might not be worth it to you (wasn't for me).

Better methods to protect your art are to read TOS of the sites you post to, and opt out from sharing your data anyway you can through any service or platform that hosts your work. But even then, that's assuming everyone is acting in good faith. Companies can lie, change their TOS, or scrapers can grab it anyway.

Unfortunately the only way to 100% protect your art from scraping (at time of writing) is to not post online at all. But also, I don't recommend artists make themselves smaller or cut themselves off from the world just because some assholes are barging into our space.

Hey! I use images.squidge.org to host my art that I link on ao3. It's an image/video hosting site that's NSFW friendly, so long as it is fandom specific.

The front page looks goofy as hell, I know. But it's been a very reliable site for me with hardly ever any downtime issues in the few years I've used it, and the links never change randomly like some platforms are prone to. My only gripe is I can't iframe a video on ao3 from squidge in the same way as an image. So my workaround for NSFW animations has been embedding a gif/screenshot to ao3 along with a standard link to jump to the mp4 version.

I think a big thing with that sort of detail is to try not to overthink them too much, especially knowing they'll only be visible at a certain scale, or for a few frames, or where the lighting is darkest. It's easy to get lost in making a lot of details, realize you don't actually know how something is supposed to look, spending a bunch of time getting it perfect, only to find that no one can actually see it because it's a night scene, lol.

The blood smears (which I wish I could show screenshots but it's kinda pushing it, considering the subject matter) are mostly just playing through different brushes that I think looked close enough and trying to consider how it would have been spread around. So the blood around the mouth in the first panel is a harder brush, since it's more concentrated, but I use a smudge tool to kinda smear it away at the edges where it would be rubbed against skin and blend out. And the finger prints were just a default watercolor brush in my animation software I thought looked kinda spotty in a nice way, and trying to just tap/swipe the brush to give the impression of blood-stained fingers leaving an imprint behind.
