it bothers me when someone brings up misogyny in shounen anime and people shrug it off with "its designed for teenage boys, what can you expect." like well. idk i think its actually pretty important that shows for teenage boys are normal about women. i mean i think all media should be normal about women but teenagers are impressionable i think we could put a little bit of feminism in the teenage boy shows. it might do some good. you never know.

having finally seen the odyssey, i do think chris nolan's is self-serious to his own detriment, having completely wasted matt damon's long-recorded talent for playing an insufferable but intensely lovable smartass. of my critiques of the film, odysseus' sheer lack of humor ranks high. but the way that nolan reframes the trojan horse as a unbearable trespass against the public good . . . that shit slapped. the film, for all its many flaws, is an indictment against self-interest and condemns our modern impulse to laugh at the trojans for accepting a sacred gift in good faith and honoring a long-held tradition of treating the stranger as one might treat the divine. (since i read the odyssey in high school, i've always seen memes and jokes about how buffoonishl-y stupid the trojans were! i fell into the logic of that joke myself!!). and while i think nolan took the coward's way out quite a bit with respect to Odysseus (he never willfully cheats in the film, for instance, and the film never really discomforts us enough, i think, for our identification/sympathy for him), i really do love that the core message of the film is that the archetypical return to home narrative is an impossibility. for odysseus, there is no golden, edenic home to return to. the gilded home of his memories is ruined by the sheer act of his return to it. or better yet, it is, in fact, corrupted by the evil he enacts abroad which cannot be separated from the evil that can be found at home. and the use of "the people of the sea" is such a fascinating addition to the epic greek tale because, insofar as the western world so often thinks of ancient greece as our social and political heritage ("they invented democracy!"), how damning that what the greeks were most afraid of in the invading foreigner was, in truth, themselves. because isn't that the core fear of anti-immigrant sentiment in the United States and United Kingdom alike? what we fear most is that the abject evil we have wrought against others will one day be enacted upon ourselves. that the invading foreigner will do to us what we have done to countless people in the past and the present alike. all that in a blockbuster movie?? hell yeah man.
