Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is laughing about the time he ate ants at Noma, the world-renowned foodie destination in his home base of Copenhagen. The Danish actor is best known for playing the rakish—and incestuous—knight Jaime Lannister on the wildly popular Game of Thrones (Showcase). In person, he’s as dashing as his alter ego—even more so since you can actually see his face without the mud and grime that coated it during his character’s gruelling back-country journey last season. His impeccable bone structure is pronounced this morning, thanks to the sunlight that streams into the restaurant at New York’s London Hotel, and even in well-worn jeans and a zip-up hoodie, he seems debonair as he sips a glass of orange juice. But back to those ants: “I tasted them and the dish had this citrus flavour,” he says. “I asked what it was and the answer was…the pee.” He laughs some more. “Pissants! Delicious.” He’s more serious when discussing—or rather, not discussing—plot points in the fourth season of Thrones. “They’d kill me,” he says. No-one wants that, especially since this is a busy time for the 43-year-old. In addition to Thrones, he’s on the big screen in The Other Woman, a comedy in which he plays a cheating husband whose mistress and wife team up to exact revenge. His co-stars? Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton. “That’s a lot of blondes,” he says. In real life, this gentleman prefers brunettes, namely his wife of 15 years, actress Nukaka Coster-Waldau. “It was love at first sight, honestly,” he says. “I saw her and said hello and that afternoon I told my friends, ‘Guys, I’m getting married.’ But I think it took longer for her.
