I usually feel so lucky that all three of my kids still nap in the middle of the afternoon. As parents, we’ve refused to acknowledge that kids grow out of nap time... and it’s worked for us. All three of them know naps are required. So far friends haven’t convinced them otherwise, and they’ve obviously inherited Michael’s strong daytime sleep genes. At almost six, MJ puts up a good fight but gives in to sleep most of the time. I usually jump up after he’s out to take advantage of the silence. When he was around 18 months, there was no such thing. If I wasn’t next to him he wasn’t napping, so I was usually held hostage for three hours at nap time. He’s been extra cuddly with Michael and I the past couple days, and I think it’s because we all sense how quickly he’s growing into a new phase of childhood. Today instead of feeling lucky that the house is finally peaceful, I’m sobbing as quietly as I can and feeling lucky I can still snuggle this little guy. This Halloween, went trick or treating with Optimus Prime, Mrs. Christy (Lily’s preschool teacher), Minnie Mouse and Poe Dameron. Got to hear “smell my feet” approximately 12 times and “transformers, let’s roll out” whenever we were ready to go to the next house. MJ also got to pet his first cat ever... “this is the first cat I’ve ever touched!” 🤯 We got caught in the rain only for the tail end of our night out, but we brought umbrellas to protect the candy! To end the evening, I got to catch some teenagers red handed as they emptied the entire bowl of candy we put out on the porch for trick or treaters. They didn’t double back but the peer shaming they were already getting as they walked away was satisfying. I’m sick and in bed, but this view tonight was everything. MJ sat here for an hour, talking to me and making me laugh and forget all about how I felt. I didn’t correct him when he said “new-zeeum” or “help-fee-est” or rush him off to bed when I saw it was getting late. Just soaked up every giggle and new story and laughed at every mischievous confession. One of my favorite things he’s said to me lately, which he said again tonight, is that when he’s 30 he’s going to “take over” his daddy’s job and marry me.
