Oh ha ha, dear guests, you are so witty! Gee it is SO clever to ask me whether âIâve baked all this myselfâ or whether Iâve âbeen slaving over a hot stove all day?â I guess Iâm supposed to respond with a tee-hee and play into your weird make-believe of me making you all this food from scratch or something?
I mean, I know you donât really think I made any of this because thatâs not how any food service establishment anywhere works, so Iâm just chalking it up to sexist fantasy. So thatâs, you know, charming.
And no, not even the (all male) kitchen staff that actually made the food took anywhere near âall dayâ to do so. Everything you see here was pretty much taken out of the freezer and thrown in the oven or deep fryer for a few minutes. So itâs cute you think there was any sort of craftsmanship involved here, but it's Sunday and the kitchen basically doesn't give a fuck.
The great part of this job is having a guest tell me how Iâve made him feel welcome and comfortable, and that he remembered me from his last stay for my friendliness and service-oriented attitude.
The not-so-great part is having him then feel comfortable enough to tell me how he feels the problem with his home city is people in âthe ghettoâ are âbreeding too muchâ and how America would be better off if we sterilized all of them..
Dispiritingly, the stereotypes about traveling businessmen are more true than I would have hoped.
What I've learned:
If someone thanks me really effusively for making their drink, it means they won't leave a tip.

Dear Valued Guests:
When you check in and get lounge access, the front desk staff tells you that everything is complimentary except the bar. The bar itself has a sign explaining that you will be billed for alcoholic drinks. And then there are the drink slips with prices listed on them. So please stop telling me that you were told the drinks were free (after you've already had several such drinks) while looking at the drink card as though it just somehow materialized in front of you.
Ooooohmygod. There are two businessmen sitting in the downstairs lounge area at this very moment talking about how great it is that in China, you can hire a housekeeper for $20 a week, and that the average salary there is $400 a month but "they don't complain," because "they're happy to have a job." And that's really awesome apparently. But of course he wouldn't want to -live- in China, one of the men wants to clarify, because real Chinese food is "smelly" and "inedible" and not good like American Chinese food.
Dear Lady Who Comes to the Concierge Lounge Every Night, Fills Up Her Plate, And Leaves All Her Food Uneaten:
Look, I understand that you may not like any particular nightâs offering, but you do this ALL THE TIME. If youâre not sure that youâll like the hors dâoeuvres, how about you try one first before piling up a full plateâs worth? Maybe youâre an optimist, but if you didnât like the offerings last night, thereâs a good chance you wonât love tonightâs either, and maybe you can leave some for the people who DO enjoy them?
You always look really tragic whenever you come in, and if youâd like to talk about your family or personal issues over a glass of wine, Iâd be all about it! Iâd listen, commiserate, and heck, Iâd even comp you the wine.
But I have a lot less sympathy when you take a whole bunch of fruit, cut half of it up, take about five bites out of the rest, and then just leave it on the table for me to clean up. I mean, you could at least put it on a plate. Weâve got those for you for a reason. I donât want to touch your half-chewed apple core and the three slices of melon with one bite mark taken out of each.
Seriously, you know what melon is, why would you take it if you were just gonna take a bite out of each slice and leave it uneaten?
Thatâs gross, lady. If Iâm going to be picking up your saliva-covered half-chewed fruit off the tabletop, you can at least leave me a tip.

Since I have to work here a lot longer in order to get any paid time off, I spend rather a daunting amount of time trying not to bleed or cough onto guests' drinks, food, or newspapers.

#1: Tip the housekeeping staff.
Out of all the people working in a hotel, housekeeping staff are possibly the most under-appreciated.
According to the workers I've talked to, most people don't tip housekeeping at all. Online sources say the same thing.
Hotel maids do NOT make very much money. They are often over-worked and asked to take on extra shifts. They have the most physical and the most dangerous job at the hotel, with the most frequent injuries. (Thus having to take on extra shifts when another member of the staff is injured.)
I have not seen ANYONE else as exhausted at the end of their shifts as the maids. It is back-breaking work, sometimes literally.
TIP YOUR MAIDS. Tip them generously. They have to deal with so much shit. They clean your toilets and wash your pubes off the shower floor, they pick up your trash, they wash your dirty sheets, they work in overheated and under-ventilated laundry rooms, and they do it for minimum wage or barely above.
Even a $1 or $2 tip is appreciated, but dammit, if you tip the bellman $2 just for bringing up some luggage, you can tip the maid a little more taking care of pretty much everything else.
I've generally tipped housekeeping when I've stayed at hotels, but after seeing just how punishing their work really is, I will tip a lot, lot more.
This is pretty much the first thing I learned after starting work here. Tip your maids. Please.
I've recently started working in the hospitality industry.
It's been quite interesting.
I intend to post the things I've learned here.
Overall, I really enjoy it. But sometimes, not so much. There may be more of the latter than of the former.
I would love to hear other people's hospitality stories, too.
