Twenty seven years is a long time. Staying down in a deep, dank sewer is hard enough for just a few years, much less over twenty. It was musty and humid and really really dark. Not that there was anything wrong with the dark, no please don’t think that, but it’s just….it’s quite the thing to not see light for twenty seven long years.
Sometimes Pennywise would create tricks and magic with the kids he collected and stored for his hibernation. He would make them float in fun patterns, arranging them in different shapes and twirling them in some awkward and involuntary dance routine. He would make his eyes shine extra brightly every once and a while just to watch the water’s reflections shimmer against the wall of his well. He’d munch on the remains of his last meal (some little kid named Johnny who was afraid of his goddam grandmother. Kids were becoming more and more pathetic.) and tried his best to breathe in the fear that constantly lingered.
He had two more kids left, not much to last him. He tapped his clawed finger nails against the bricks and sighed so heavily the sound echoed.
Just a few more days, he thought. Then I can go back up. I’ll see the sun once again! And I’ll feel the fear! It will be so fresh! No more left overs!
He cracked a large grin, barring four rows of razor sharp fangs. Pennywise started to laugh. Deep belly laughs exploded from him and he felt the joy of hunting overwhelm him once again.
Not too far from Pennywise’s sewer hiding place, a new stranger was tiptoeing around the beaten down house at the end of the street that made all who passed it feel uneasy. This stranger was no human, Pennywise would have been rather alert to that. No, this presence was different. Cold and dark like the sewers under Derry. The creature moved silently through the home, wondering to himself if this would be a good place to rest. After all, terrorizing children is really hard work.
Babadook finally settled on a room upstairs with a broken window that was all boarded up. He appreciated the fact that the light could not touch him in there. He loved his shadows and the comfort of the dark. It was where he was safe. It was–what was that?!
A creaking from downstairs echoed through the seemingly empty house. Babadook darted into the closet of the room he was harboring in. He knew it could not be a human, he would’ve sensed it! Unless he was too tired? Babadook’s usual grin fell from his face as he blended into the depths of the empty closet. Clunky footsteps sounded their way through the home.
Pennywise was ready to defend his home. He had emerged from his hiding place into his home because this could NOT be a human. He had sensed a trespasser, but it was unlike any unfortunate soul who had stumbled into his home before.
He desperately clung to his sense of smell, searching the stale air of the wrecked house for some sign. Something was trespassing! In his home!
Two. Days. Before. He. Got. To. Eat.
Oh no, something was going to die today. Pennywise would make sure of it.
He sauntered onto the second floor and closed his glowing yellow eyes. Taking a whiff of the air, a particular scent caught his attention. He knew it well. A many (many many many Jesus so many freaking teeth) tooth filled grin crossed the clown’s face.
Fear. That was the smell!
