first time answering an hxh ask in two months, kind of nervous. thank you so much for asking this question. there's certainly a few. my overall favorites in terms of sheer narrative impact and memorability are uvogin vs kurapika and gon's breakdown upon seeing pitou healing komugi. a pretty random one is i love hina and welfin's conclusion scene in CAAββdon't die until you're dead" was always a mantra that stuck out to me because of its simplicity but it's also just adventurous and exciting in a classic shounen way with characters we aren't very familiar with and it makes the world feel so lived in.
but, my absolute favorite, and one that has stuck with me for six years now, is koala's monologue to kite ("it seems small things, infinitesimal small things, are needed to build the entirety of the universe...i'll live through the suffering. when i die, i want to feel like i did my best.") it's just a scene that's personal to me because hxh is truly what revitalized my interest in creativity post-COVID hurting some artistic opportunities for me. togashi is working through his own existentialism in it; he's telling his audience that you can feel insignificant, but you're a part of and necessary to a larger composition of life and society. you are the world, the world is you. it's perfect to utilize a minor character like koala; hxh in general is great with expanding the story beyond its protagonists and deconstructing "great man" narratives to encourage his audience to build their own destiny even if they don't feel like social "main characters".
i like its take on justice, too. koala might have been a "bad guy" but that doesn't curse him to eternal damnation. hxh has really never been punitive. regret, forgiveness, humanityβall of these core themes of the narrative are encapsulated in this one beautiful little moment. i really want to see more of koala in the future. togashi so successfully builds out a backstory, motivation, character arc, and personality for a random ass character in one chapter, and delivers one of the most impactful things i've read to date. on top of that, togashi was clearly drawing through pain. hxh is a story that perfectly satisfies the balance being creative liberty & artistic control, and then love for its audience. hunter x hunter is so special because it's togashi's love letter to his readers and yet he still doesn't bend to fanservice or genre expectations. there's just something so lovely about reading what's practically a motivational speech to both himself and the audience. he has a love for story telling few other creators match and i can't think of another scene where it comes through better than chapter 337.
