THE ONION

On a recent trip to Bolivia, I stayed with a family that grew fields of onions and sold them in the market (a 10 hour truck ride away) as their families livelihood. This family lived in a mud house and did the cooking in an outdoors kitchen, where my host mother would spend hours preparing onion flavored foods on an earth stove (a.k.a. a fire pit). The house was about functionality, not excess, which meant the guest room was also the onion storage room, so every night I would drift to sleep by the wafting smell of sweet onion.

Now in New York I often see this familiar globed flower ornamenting the cities precious gardens. This bright purple Allium Globemaster, a variation of the onion, is used for it's beauty and to attract butterflies.

What a perfect combination of functionality, edible and beautiful.

This little baby frog, brand new to the world, takes its first breaths of air after weeks underwater as a tadpole. Much like a human being born out of the liquid environment of it's mothers womb into an existence of oxygen filled lungs. Sadly, 120 amphibian species, including frogs, toads and salamanders, have disappeared since 1980. Frogs are both predator and pray and they live in water with permeable skin making them useful for scientist to analyze how an ecosystem is functioning. The tragic loss in species and apparent deformities can be closely linked to increased use of pesticides. Since frogs share half of the DNA that humans do, it would be foolish to think we are exempt from negative side effects of these poisons so often drenching our food and leaking into our water. Let's take hint and not learn the hard way.

Like humans, animals are resilient and can adapt to living amid the NYC's lifeless concrete. Though we seek the few remaining bits of earth dappled throug out the city, the lifeless matter we live in allows for a stark beauty to be profiled.
