type: slow burn romance
warnings: none, except Jason being a bully. pls let me know if you think otherwise.
A/N: I do use she/her but Y/N is not described further bc I wanted the character to be neutral for the reader to imagine, informing you all of this if youâd like to read it even though you donât identify as female or use she/her pronounce. Hope you guys like it!

âI canât believe they let you on the cheer squadâŚâ Your older brother shook his head as you stood as still as you could.
Your mother was taking your measurements as you stood in your new uniform to have it sewn to fit you.
âSheâs a Carver, her brother is the captain of the basketball team. Of course sheâs going to be on the cheer squad.â Your father spoke behind the news paper he was reading.
âSheâs not really like the other girls on the squad.â Jason let his parents and you know.
âAnd I donât want to be like them eitherâŚâ You rolled your eyes.
The truth was you were only on the team because Robin were. She was on the team because of a girl. Only you and Steve Harrington knew that though. Robin had planned it and the easiest way to get a place on the cheer squad was to join together with Y/N Carver. The younger sibling of the head of the basketball team. So now that you were changing school, you were forced to sport this green colored outfit. Which was about so far away you could get from your usual attire.
When you were in middle school your family moved, Jason started at Hawkins high but you had decided to stay at your old school. It took an extra while to get there, now that you were in high school you had finally decided to change school. You didnât really have a ton of friends at the old school, so there was nothing holding you back really. Jason had talked about how big Hawkins was compared to your school so you were hoping to find some likeminded people to make friends with. People  with a great taste in music and stuff like that, not only these cookie-cutter people, like your brother. Hopefully you being a cheerleader wouldnât stop you from meeting these people. You worked with Steve and Robin at the video store and you knew some of their younger friends also went to Hawkins. You hoped that Robin and the others would be okay with you tagging along with them, at least occasionally.
Since Jasonâs girlfriend Chrissy was a cheerleader, you had already joined in on some practices with the cheer squad. Tomorrow though would be your first full day at your new school and later that evening there would be a game in which you had to attend, as the new cheerleader. Yay youâŚ
Next morning:
âY/N! Iâm leaving!â Jason called out from where he stood at the door.
âAlright, alright!â You hurried down the stairs.
âYou canât be serious no.â He shook his head at the sight of you.
âWhat you held your arms out and spun around.
âThatâs not- How are we even related? You look like one of the freaks of Hawkins high school.
It was gameday, that meant that the cheerleaders were wearing their uniforms throughout the schoolday. Which you were, but over the tiny cheercistume you had put on your oversized black jeanjacket, patched with some of your favorite bands.
As soon as you got to school your brother ditched you for his teammates. Leaving you to walk around trying to find your classes alone. Luckily for you, just as you were about to walk in the doors of the school you saw Robin pull up on her bike. You hurried over and as her bike were locked you both headed inside and down the hallways. As you got to talking you found that you had no classes together until after lunch but Robin promised to walk you to your first class.
âWait wait wait! Whoâs that?â Eddie whispered to hia friends as you passed them by.
âWho?â Gareth looked ahead searching for the target. So did the others.
âShe has a jacket full of band patches. There a girl in this town with a good taste in music? Look at her. She must be a godessâŚâ Eddie followed her movements closely as she strutted down the hall. Hoping to get a glance of the girlâs face.
âWhat class is she in?â Dustin asked but none of them knew.
It was now lunchtime. Feeling out of place, you stood looking around for a place to sit down. You walked up and down the area that was looking over all the tables. Thatâs when you heard your name being called.
âY/N!?â Dustin exclaimed with a surprised smile on his face.
âOh my God! Hey guys! You have no idea how happy I am that I ran into some familiar faces!â You hugged Mike and Dustin before looking at the others, greeting them with a smile.
âYouâre a cheerleader?â Mike asked even more surprised.
âGo HawkinsâŚâ You cheered sarcastically with a flat expression.
They all chuckled.
âCan I sit with you guys? I havenât seen Robin around and I-â
âSure! I mean, can she Eddie?â Dustin spoke turning to the long haired leader sitting at the end of the Hellfire table.
âUh- ehm, yeah âcourseâŚâ He stuttered barely looking up at you or the others.
âAh thanks, Iâll just go grab some food. Iâll be right back you waved at the group before leaving.
âYou know her!?â Eddie blurted out, hovering over the table.
âUh, yeah Y/N sheâs a friend of Robin, she works at Family Video with her and Steve. Sheâs really cool.â Dustin smiles.
âOh she plays Dungeons and Dragons too, sheâs actually really good at it. Yeah, and as you saw sheâs into all that metal music tooâŚâ Mike nodded.
Eddie was speechless. How could they have been keeping her a secret from him. For how long?
âOh! I just remembered! Sheâs the goddess you were talking about in the hallway earlier isnât she!â Dustin teased a little to loud for Eddieâs taste.
âShut up, manâ He hissed as he hit his fist on the table.
Mike and the others couldnât help but giggle as Eddie got flustered.
As you were returning to the table you saw the boys stopping their conversation, giving you their full attention. Just as you were at the end of the table across from Eddie, two cheerleaders carrying their lunchtrays walked up to you.
âY/N! Come with us! You have to sit with us!â They gave you big smiles as they pointed to a table further away. Looking over you saw a table filled with cheerleaders and next to them sat the basketball team, and your brother glaring your way. You could tell he was not happy and a part of you wondered if he had sent the two girls to get you.
You offered the Hellfire table an apologetic look.
âItâs fine, see you later Y/N.â Dustin assured you.
âIâm sorry, talk to you later, alright?â You said as the girls lead you away.
You sat down with the other girls and looked over at your brother. You flipped him off as he mouthed âdonât even try toâŚâ to you. Returning your attention to the food on your tray, you did not indulge in the gossip and conversations of the other girls.
âWhy is she even cheering? Thatâs so not Y/NâŚâ Mike spoke as you were still the topic of conversation at the Hellfire table.
Eddie couldnât keep his eyes off of you as you now sat on the other side of the cafeteria.
âYeah, she seems to be soâŚ.â Gareth started his sentence.â
âGet her to be a replacement for Sinclair.â Eddie demanded looking at Dustin and Mike.
âWhat? But sheâs a cheerleader. At the game Sinclair is playing at.â Gareth spoke.
âShe would fit in better here in the Hellfire club thoughâŚâ Dustin agreed.
âI should ask her shouldnât I? Or I can invite her to our gig?â Eddie was brainstorming ideas on how he would be able to talk to you.
âI mean, sheâs your godessâŚâ Dustin made fun of him earning some chuckles from the others but Eddie ignored him.
âI should go over and talk to her. Iâll go over there now.â He nodded standing up.
âEh, thatâs not a good idea. Talk to her later in the hallway or something⌠donât go over there now.â Dustin and the others tried to shut down his idea. To no avail as he headed for the table full of cheerleaders.
You sat at the very end of the table, with your back to the Hellfire table you didnât see him coming.
âUhmâŚâ Eddie cleared his throat getting your attention.
âHi!â You lit up as you saw him.
âHey, Iâm Eddie we met earlier at the-â he pointed at the table where Dustin and the other sat, watching Eddie and Y/N.
âThe Hellfire Club, right. Whatâs up? Eddie right?â You smiled, making him lose his ability to remember why heâd even come over here.
âUh I was just⌠you have a great taste in music, at least by the looks of it, your jacket I meanâŚâ he rambled.
âYeah, you too.â You giggled pointing at one of the patches on his vest, you had the same one on your jacket.
He blushed, covering the lower half of his face with some of his hair.
âI was just going to ask if maybe youâd want to come see my band play? Next Friday?â He asked as he got a paper out of his pocket.
You took it and looked over the page. By now both the cheerleaders and boys on the basketball team had stopped and started to follow your conversation but neither you nor Eddie seemed to have noticed.
âThatâs cool, Iâd love to!â You beamed up at him, handing him the paper back.
âCool, nah, thatâs fine you keep it.â He gave you a more confident smile now.
But the paper was ripped out of your hand and as your eyes looked away from Eddie you noticed your brother.
âDo we have a problem here, freak?â Jason spoke standing right in Eddieâs personal space.
âNo. Were just talking about my band.â
âNo one gives a shit about your band. Or your devil worshipping music. Donât talk to Y/N.â Your brother warned Eddie as he ripped the paper into shreds.
âJason-â you started.
âThis is a land of free speech, Iâll talk to whoever I want to.â Eddie looked Jason dead in the eye.
You felt your stomach turn and your heart beat a little faster, scared of what your brother could do to Eddie but also excited to see someone stand up to your brother.
âNot to my sister youâre not.â Jason said. You could see the surprise on Eddieâs face as he looked back down on you. He didnât say anything more.
âNow leave if you donât want your ass kicked, punk.â
âJason, enough.â Your brotherâs girlfriend spoke up noticing that you were getting upset.
Known to be the only one to be able to calm him down, Jason listened and walked back to his seat but not before making sure Eddie left you alone.
You watched as Eddie made his way back to the others at his table.
Some of the cheerleaders had already left the table. You had kind of lost your appetite after what happened and so after youâd seen the Hellfire club leave their table you waited a short while before hurrying out the cafeteria. Out in the hall you caught up with Dustin, Mike and some of their friends.
âHeyâŚâ You looked through the bunch and scanned the people around them. Dustin seemed to notice.
âHeâs in the woods behind the school.â He let you know with a smirk.
âI just need to apologize for how my brother actedâŚâ You explained.
âYeah⌠Well, Iâm sure heâll be overjoyed to see youâŚâ Dustin winked.
You blushed but hoped it wasnât noticeable.
âWhere do IâŚ?â You asked looking around.
âOut that door. And youâll see the trail going into the woods⌠You want us to come with you?â Dustin offered.
âNo. Thank you, Iâll find it. See you guys!â You smiled and waved at the group in front of you.
As you got there you hurried down the small trail. You heard what you thought was Eddieâs voice talking to someone, this made you stop in your tracks to listen. Slowly you moved closer and as you stood behind a tree you could get a glimpse of Eddie. Upon hearing a girl laughing you moved further to your right. Her voice was familiar and as you caught a glimpse of her too you saw none other than your brothers girlfriend, Chrissy. The last person you would think to hang around someone like Eddie but also the last person you thought Eddie would be hanging around with. But then again, you didnât know him that well, if at all.
You heard her thank him before standing up from where she was sitting at a table.
As Chrissy left you made your way out of behind the trees, catching Eddieâs attention at he closed what looked like a metal lunchbox.
âYou hang around with all cheerleaders? Or just the ones officially connected to my brother?â You winked as you sat down.
âUh, noâŚâ Eddie chuckled scratching his head
âHow do you know Chrissy?â You asked.
âI donât⌠not really. She wanted something and IâŚâ
âIs she cheating on Jason with you??â You looked
âWhat!? No! I sell.. uhm..â
âDoes she buy drugs from you!? Are you her plug!?â
âNo, I mean, yeah but this is the first time it ever happenedâŚâ Eddie admitted.
âOhâŚâ
âShe seemed⌠are you two close?â He asked.
âSheâs really sweet, God knows why she fell for my brotherâŚâ you rolled your eyes but earned a chuckle from Eddie.
âShe seems really sweet. We were in the same talent show once, sheâs a good cheerleader too.â Eddie spoke talking about Chrissy.
âDo you have a crush on her?â Your eyes narrowed, interested in what he would answer.
âOh gosh no. I didnât mean it like thatâŚâ he responded awkwardly and somewhat uncomfortable.
âSorry, I didnât mean to make you uncomfortableâŚâ
âNo donât be sorry⌠So, your last school? Were you a cheerleader there too?â He asked you, sitting down across from you.
âOh noâŚâ you shook your head. âI was the outcast. Into rock nâ roll, D&D, yâknowâŚâ you looked up into his eyes, he gave you an understanding nod.
âYeah, I knowâŚâ
âBut as long as you have good friends, who cares what others think of you..â you shrugged.
âYou miss your friends? I mean from your old school?â He asked.
âI didnât really have friends, I was spending most of my time at the library⌠I played D&D with some guys from the AV club thatâs about it, I donât really miss them thoughâ you laughed, remembering those times.
âAnd a boyfriend?â Eddie spoke quietly.
âWhat?â His question surprised you.
âDo you have a boyfriend?â He asked again, taking a deep breath as he shifted in his seat, internally regretting that he even asked.
âNah, I donât have a boyfriend. The school wasnât like this one, no cool guys there at allâŚâ You chuckled, occacionally exchanging glances with the boy in front of you.
âAnd there are a lot of cool guys in this school..?â Eddie raised an eyebrow. Secretly scared that you had your sights on someone.
âYouâre a cool guyâŚâ You offered and felt your cheeks heat up.
Eddie looked up surprised at what you said.
âThanksâŚâ He hid his reaction in his long curls.
You looked at him making sure you hadnât made an ass of yourself. You didnât think so.
It had turned silent and just as Eddie was about to break the silence so did you.
âHellfire seems cool!â You tried to not sound awkward.
âYeah, it is, you should come to one of our meetings some time.â He smiled.
You nodded trying not to blush.
âThis is kind of a stupid question⌠are you going to the game tonight?â You asked him.
âHeh, Iâm not⌠we have a meeting tonight.â He explained.
âAlright, just checkingâŚâ you nodded understanding.
Getting up from your seat you put your backpack on again as it was time to head back to class.
âMaybe!â He called out getting your attention. âMaybe, uhm we are missing one player, if they canât find a replacement⌠maybe Iâll see you at the game..?â Eddie sounded insecure.
âOkay, sounds good.â You smiled, before starting to walk again. âOh and Chrissyâs gonna be there too!â You shouted from a far, turning around to see his reaction as you winked. He rolled his eyes with a chuckle.
âI donât think Iâll notice anyone else if youâre down there busting out your little dance moves!â He replied while mockingly doing some cheer moves.
âSee you âround Eddie!â You laughed.
âSee you around Y/NâŚâ His eyes on you as he spoke quietly, knowing you couldnât hear him as you walked away.
