Taweret lifted her chin, casting her thoughts back to the earliest days of Amon-Ra's kingdom. The sun god would have used the solar barque to survey the land at his whims, from sunrise to sunset.
"Some control," she provided after some thought. "Ra could use the barque to empower solar rays for propulsion. Its... Entirely possible that it could be used to weaken them."
It was a guess, and the best one they had, but it was a strategy they could work with. It was something to grasp on to.
"If we could control it, we could use it like a siphon to draw some of the sunlight away. And sailing it to the Duat would give us a safe place to do it! ...Well, relatively safe. If someone can keep his attention on this plane."
The excitement was building, and for the first time since the attack, Taweret was starting to act like herself. "I think this might work. Actually work!" she squealed, clasping her hand together.
"Now we just need that tea! ...And to get us to Heliopolis, but I think I can manage that."
"I need to get some things." Thera's eyes stayed narrowed, but their slant had moved from Taweret to ... nowhere, really, the open space in front of them as her focus retreated inward instead. Her pulse had sped up, something sparking in her chest to replace the sense of hopelessness, complement the brewing anger. But she was too cautious to rely completely on might work.
" ... Khonshu is likely to be his next target." Which could be a blessing, in its way, as he was also one of the best equipped to fight. Thera turns on her heel, moving with purpose - finally given a purpose to move for.
Her battle-bag has been packed for days, armour, weapons ... other small items that may just turn the tide.
"Any ounce of the sun's power we can take away will give the old bird an advantage." Any shadow, any hint of night. And if they were discovered, perhaps Ra would hesitate for a second over destroying his own barque? Though probably not for long.
The bag was slung over her shoulder, a comforting weight, a black and gold staff in her other hand. "Maybe the tea should wait until Heliopolis?" A deep breath, looking up at the goddess again.
"And if he finds us ... leave him to me."
Taweret watched Thera as she marched across the space, recognizing the glint in her eye. She had the beginnings of a plan, a target to focus on, and... a purpose. The goddess had seen it many times, in many warrior's faces. The hippo followed behind her, considering what Thera was saying. "Yes, I'd imagine most of his rage is towards Khonshu. He and his allies, that is to say, us stand to be the only opposition he has." Unless one or more of the other pantheons took offense to Amon-Ra claiming the Earth all for himself. Or Earth's own heroes gathered their own might together to make a stand. Somehow, she hoped so, if it came to needing them... "Tea later then," Taweret stopped behind Thera as she gathered the last of her things. "But Thera, dove... I won't let you face Ra on your own." She pulled herself to her full height. "We're in this together. I won't let him hurt you." The matter settled in her mind, the goddess lifted a hand and made a circular motion. A line of sand was drawn, swirling around in the shape of a portal. Slowly the image in the middle came into view; the ruins of Heliopolis, in Egypt. Taweret smiled, "After you, dear."

Even one bingo feels unexpected, really, considering how far apart they are in terms of personality. But then, this sheet was assembled with mortals in mind, so fellow gods of his pantheon did have an edge, marking some of the boxes by default. "Was that the result you hoped for, Taweret?"
"Oh I wasn't hoping for any result," Taweret said cheerfully, still holding her golden hippopotamus stamp. "I thought it looked like fun and decided to give it a try." She smirked back at him, "Does that mean you're in the market for a little more company? I hear that very nice mortal Lover's Moon has been back around..."

Taweret dipped her head in a short bow of thanks. There weren't many people she or any of the remaining members of her pantheon could turn to for aid, or even support. Most others had abandoned their watch ages ago, to return to their place of origin, or to the citadel Zeus and the Greco-Roman gods had begun.
And yet, somehow, there were always mortals who would step up, where divinity failed. It gave her a great sense of hope, for everything it was worth.
At the mention of another boat, her ears gave a sharp flick. "You mean the solar barque? Oh my..." Taweret's thoughts turned contemplative. "I don't think anyone has used it in... Well, at least a few millenia. Not since Amon-Ra was first dethroned. No one really wanted anything associated with him at the time, for obvious reasons. You understand."
She rubbed her chin. Thera may have meant it as a humorous jab; a boat for a boat, after all, but it did stir an idea.
"I suppose... If one knew where to recover that barque... It wouldn't be amiss to put it to a better use." Taweret looked down at Thera, a certain glint her eye.
"Tell me, dove... What do you know about solar sailing?"
Hope was always a dangerous thing. A treacherous thing if left raw, untempered by thought or planning. It wasn't hope that spurred Thera on, just a pure, ruthless refusal to give up. If Ra was going to kill her, she had no intention of dying anywhere but on her feet.
She half-turned, to ask if she should begin making the tea or if Taweret would conjure it as she had before - then stayed, looking straight ahead, as another thought clicked to mind. And not only to hers, it would seem, as she looked toward the goddess and felt the sensation of the same penny dropping for them both.
" ... Does the Barque have any control over the sun?" Yes it had been a mostly a joke, scornful and dry - but now her eyes sharpened in accord with Taweret's. "Is taking his barque to the Underworld going to weaken him?" Bring darkness, shadows, night - Khonshu's realm.
Thera didn't believe Ra was as all-powerful as he claimed, and if they couldn't fight him directly then chipping away at that power, giving someone else more chance, would do.
"I only the theory of solar ... but I have a very long history of sailing by sea." One eyebrow twitched, followed by the corners of a smile.
"Shall we make that tea 'to go'?"

Closing the handbook and holding it against her chest, Taweret looked on as the man absorbed the information, though it wasn't what he had probably hoped for. "It is a rule for a reason," she spoke softly. "Once passed, those deemed worthy of an afterlife can no longer directly affect the living world. They've earned their peace." Even with his masked visage, she could feel the grief rolling off of him in waves. The pain of losing a child was one of the greatest tragedies one could face, god or mortal. Taweret had felt it herself, through her followers when against all hope they would inevitably face that stark reality. And though the circumstances for his parenthood were... unique, his pain was no less for it. His second question, though, made her pause. "Well... No. It's number two. Rule Number One would be that 'No mortal may know or interfere with the passing of a soul from one plane of the afterlife to another.' However, there have been instances where rules were... Let's say, bent rather than outright broken." The hippo tried giving him a kind smile, "I really shouldn't be offering this, but if it would give you some semblance of peace... Perhaps I could speak with Gabriella on your behalf. Give her a message from you?"
Of course. He of all people recognised the importance of respecting that, abiding by directives laid down for reasons he could only hope to guess at, let alone comprehend the thinking that surrounded their inception. The dead deserved to be remembered and respected, not disturbed from their eternal slumber.
But.... had Gabriella reached that point? As quick as the goddess had explained the book's tenets, new concerns began to gather and fester on the surface of his conscience. Nothing of hers had survived, not bones nor clothes nor her laughter. But he had never before gave thought to the fate of her soul, and that alone cut him deeper than any wound.
"Mortals may not interfere, huh?" A bitter snap of laughter shoved its way out of his chest at that, the effort lacklustre and as fruitless as attempting to inflate a punctured tyre. "Done my share of interfering." Inserting himself into a story already concluded, stealing an identity that had been claimed by the rush of a bullet.
His jaw works to pass another comment at his own expense, but then mention is made of bending the rules, making exceptions in substantially exceptional circumstances. It caused Miguel to clam up at once, frozen, in muted fixation, focused completely on the ancient hippo and her kindly offer. "You'd... you'd speak with her?" He rasps, throat suddenly parched. "Yeah... God, yeah! Please! Please speak with her!" Gone was the strength of stone from his voice as his emotions took hold. Starved, wilted aspects that had been thought lost by the spreading of his grief, brought back to the surface.
Where should he even start?
"I... I don't know... what to tell her." Other than the truth. That it should've been him who paid the price for interfering in another reality's matters in the first place. "How is this... how is this possible?"
The offer wasn't exactly a small effort, even for a goddess connected to both children and the afterlife, but this felt worth everything she would have to put forth. Taweret felt a great sympathy for the fate of that one little girl, even if she originated from another universe. She was still an innocent soul, caught up in something beyond her or anyone's comprehension at the time. Something that had never happened before. And, for all his faults, Miguel was a man who was trying to make amends for that. Even after everything, he was still a father at heart, or else she wouldn't have even been here. "Anything is possible with enough faith," she smiled. "Not necessarily faith in me or my kind, but the faith you hold for Gabriella... It's enough to do great things, my dear." Taweret stepped closer, shifting the Book of the Dead under one arm to place a sympathetic hand on Miguel's shoulder. Her hand was warm, a sense of peace and comfort emanating from the small bit of contact. "Speak from your heart, Miguel. Tell her how much you love her still. Tell her how much you cherish her memories, her laughter, her smile. You were her world, as she was yours. She'll know."
Taweret makes a noise in the back of her throat, trying not to sound distressed. She fidgets in place for a moment, which is an odd sight for the larger goddess, before she sighs and dips her head. "Ra appeared in the Duat, which shouldn't have been possible, but..." Another sigh, "He attacked me on the Barge of the Dead. I escaped after the initial blast but the ship is gone. Destroyed. Which means..." Which meant that the recently deceased would be left stranded between life and afterlife for the time being, but Taweret couldn't bring herself to say it aloud. Everything felt like one disaster after another, and even the gods were finding it hard to keep up. She brushed a bit more soot off the front of her dress, lifting her head back to Thera. "...That was the threat he made at the time, yes..." Her eyebrows furrowed, "Whether or not he could have made good on it was hotly debated, but in the end it was decided not to risk the chance..." At the declaration that what the situation currently needed was tea, the goddess' expression brightened a fraction. "Yes. Yes, tea would be... nice." Then, softer, "Thank you, Thera."
One of the weaknesses of gods, so Thera had found, was their subconscious belief in 'all or nothing'. It came out in creatures like Amon-Ra, with his quest to rule all things, in the Ennead withdrawing because they couldn't gather all their due. And it reflected again in their attitude to anyone who was not one of them. You were a god or a mortal, had all the knowledge or none at all, there was no in-between.
Good. It meant the Sun God would likely underestimate her - sitting nicely in-between.
"Alright, then." She understood the urge to keep moving, even if that was simply staying on her feet, but it wasn't helping anything much. A hand extended, either for the goddess to take or to invite her to walk with, "A decent cuppa will do us both goods" Something to do, and a moment to think - to assimilate, with the fairly shocking news that Taweret's barge was gone. And ...
Thera paused, brow creasing anew. "I'm not sure he thought that through ..." If the passage to the Duat was closed, then ...

If by 'light toasting' one meant facing the force of the sun, but she supposed it was all relative. With Amon-Ra it could have been a much worse outcome...
"Sealing him in an ushabti would have been a better solution, wouldn't it?" Her expression fell again, "But that's the thing about Amon-Ra... For all intents and purposes, he is the sun."
As soon as she said it, Taweret realized that required a bit more of an explanation. "All of his power comes from it, and at the same time his continued existence powers the sun. If he were to perish or, say, be sealed away in an ushabti, then the sun would go dim... Which, I don't need to tell you, would be a bad thing for everyone."
It wasn't often she felt helpless, but these were dire circumstances to be in. It had been tens of thousands of years by mortal reckoning, but she felt just as fearful as she had been the first time this had happened.
"It's a bit of a rock and a hard place, I'm afraid. It was decided that the lesser evil would be to simply banish him from the Ennead and the Overvoid. But now..." Her face fell again, "I'm not so sure it was the wisest choice."
Thera's eyes stayed narrowed, and an edge of something settled across her shoulders as they squared. Steel, stone, it didn't matter, it mirrored the glint in her gaze. Amon-Ra had taunted others she cared about, but done no physical harm. But now, for this, given the chance she was going to have his throat.
"What did he do?" Two millennia was still an eye-blink to the gods, but every last minute of them weighed in her tone. Taweret wasn't likely to want to speak of it, but even this would be knowledge of the enemy.
And besides that ... her head tilted a little, frown deepening. The rest of it ... did not make sense. It didn't make sense for several reasons, more of which gathered to mind as she stood.
" ... Did he tell them that?" Softer, suspicious. It was the only protest she would make right then. Taweret was upset enough without having the old decision picked apart - especially when Thera was still guessing. "So ... we're now stuck between possibly causing a worldwide catastrophe, and submitting to a definite one."
She paused a beat, exhaled through her nose. "We need some tea."

A shaky breath and a very loud sniffle, and Taweret looked a little more put together. Barely. She was still trying to process everything, it had all happened so quickly. And now that the Duat was without a caretaker... "Um... That's a little tricky to answer," she started, her hands fidgeting with the front of her singed dress. "Amon-Ra was banished eons ago, after the last time he tried to assert total control over... Well, everything." Her tusks clicked in her mouth as she opened and closed it, trying to figure out the best way to explain. "We came together to stop him, of course, but we couldn't... y'know... Without the entire sun going dark. So he was banished. To where... It's anyone's guess, really." In hindsight that was a foolish thing to do, letting the Sun God go without knowing to exactly where, but he was still too powerful then to lock up, and again... Killing wasn't exactly an option. "As for why now...? I suppose, he sensed some weakness in the Ennead." Taweret sighed heavily, "Things have been more than chaotic after what happened in Cairo, and Ammit... And Osiris isn't exactly being proactive in holding the pieces together."
Anyone's guess - ? Thera's brows knit, her mouth opened ... and paused there, stymied on what to say. Surely it must have sounded as ridiculous to Taweret as it did to her, just letting someone like Ra toddle off ... somewhere. Enough so that there was no real gain in her pointing it out.
Privately it reminded her of the first time Napoleon was exiled, and she couldn't help disappointment that the Ennead had made a similar mistake.
"I gather this was before the ... ushabti idea?" Her voice had lost a little of its vigor - and focus, as the thought began to ease in that she'd was missing something. She fought by her own methods, but that were going at it like an angry beast, pacing and prowling until she found the right place to sink her teeth.
And through that single-mindedness ... it only now began to creep in that not only was Taweret upset, but there were marks on her dress, and a faint but pervasive smell of smoke.
Thera closed her eyes, turned her face away in a mix of chagrin and shame. The warrior in her, the protector, had pushed aside her empathy as much as it had her fear.
"I'm sorry ..." A puff of breath, looking at Taweret properly for the first time, and though her voice softened, eyes narrowed. "Did he hurt you?"

" ... I see." An exhale, a settling of her shoulders, almost as if her last puff of hope had departed with the air. Not too far from the truth. In an ideal existence, she'd wanted Taweret to laugh, to dismiss this 'sun god' as a pretender and fake.
But ... you can't always get what you want.
Ohh, Thera had always known it was going to come to a fight, and a bad one at that - but she'd still been hoping for a slightly lesser threat than the actual god this new arrival was claiming to be. But he was, and all any of them could do now was deal with it.
